The growth of information technology and internet access among students is effective factors to improve the instructional approaches for fostering critical thinking in online environments. Although many researchers have studied on cultivating critical thinking, many do not consider the relationship between critical thinking and Information seeking behavior of students in e-learning environments. This paper focuses on the relationship between critical thinking and information seeking behavior of students in e-learning environments and the role of information seeking behavior of students to cultivate critical thinking.

Previous studies were library-focused examining status of services provided for the disabled. This paper approaches the issue from the visually impaired person’s (VIP) perspective. The study uses the qualitative approach through interviews and focus group discussions with eighteen VIPs who are registered in a university library. For trustworthiness of data, prolonged engagement, member checking and audit from experts are used. The VIPs perceived student volunteers as their academic saviour and social connectors who enrich their academic, social and emotional lives.

The study ensues the continuous increase in the proportion and cost of information resources (electronic and print) coupled with the current dwindling budget crushing libraries worldwide. It adopts questionnaires to elicit responses from 111 purposively selected librarians, specifically from Malaysia's academic libraries' acquisition units. This study revealed that some Malaysian academic libraries practice the user-initiated collection acquisition model, with modifications from the Patron Driven Acquisition (PDA) practiced in the developed world. Malaysian academic libraries adopt the stand-alone user-initiated collection development model instead of integrating the model with either the library OPAC or publishers ‘databases as practiced by other libraries. The user-driven acquisition model is productive considering resource usage, library budget justific...

The main objectives of this study were to: (i) investigate how easy or difficult students found it to use e-books by giving them the opportunity to interact with e-books in an operational environment; (ii) determine whether any differences existed in ease of use ratings between students that had and had not used an e-book before the survey; (iii) investigate which e-book features users valued in terms of shelf browsing and content browsing; (iv) measure students' preferences between e-books or printed books given several scenarios; (v) establish whether any differences existed in terms of book format preferences between students that had and had not used an e-book before the survey; (vi) explore students' perceptions and impressions regarding specific features, such as browsable and searchable book indexes and table of contents, in an online library catalogue. The respondents were selected using a systematic random approach from a list of respondents from a previous web survey who had agreed beforehand to participate in this study. A total of 18 participants consisting of undergraduate and postgraduate instructional students completed the study. The findings indicated that in general students found that interacting with e-books in the collection was very easy. Students indicated that their preferred book formats varied depending on the context. In general students were positive about incorporating certain additional e-book features into an online library catalogue. Despite their positive reactions and attitudes towards e-books, students commented that e-books needed to be promoted more strongly and that there were limitations with respect to their use.

In this paper, we proposed a new concept, namely fog learning with the aim of addressing the critical thinking as a demanding issue in academic area. Due to the distributed architecture of our fog learning model, it can be used anywhere, anytime, and with the minimum latency in comparison with the existing mobile and cloud learning models to foster the critical thinking. To test the effectiveness of the proposed method, we applied the Software Usability Measurement Inventory (SUMI) as well as the acceptance test. We firstly showed that more than 74% of participants suffered from lack of critical thinking. Moreover, the participants indicated that they use several critical thinking skills during information seeking process, which shows there are relationships between critical thinking skills and the information seeking processes. According to the relationships between critical thinking skills and the information seeking processes, we designed a prototype for cultivating of critical thinking on the basis of fog learning. The results of the prototype evaluation emphasized on its positive role to foster critical thinking.

This evaluation is conducted to answer the following research question: a) What is the perceived usefulness of the e-workspace in supporting transliteration work and collaboration from the Malay manuscript community? b) What are the usability issues highlighted regarding the Malay manuscript e-workspace? The evaluation is carried out based on five usability dimensions, namely, efficiency, effectiveness, engagement, error tolerance and ease of learning. A single case study has been employed in this evaluation which included lecturers, students, and researchers from the Academy of Malay Studies, University of Malaya as participants. These participantsare directly involved in teaching, learning and researching Malay manuscripts. The user evaluation is carried out in two phases. The first phase involves a task-based approach where participants are given several tasks to perform while using the e-workspace. The second phase is a focus group discussion to elicit the participants’ feedback on the perceived usefulness of the e-workspace after they have completed the given tasks. System evaluation of the Malay Manuscript e-workspace in serving the manuscript community has been reflected by the positive feedback from the 19 participants. The findings signify a positive reaction from participants towards the e-workspace. The e-workspace in general has been perceived as useful to support teaching, learning and researching manuscripts by providing a collaborative platform to conduct transliteration work electronically.

But, analyzing and interpreting this volume of information will lead to researchers overload in pursuing their research. Trend detection in scientific publication retrieval systems helps scholars to find relevant, new and popular special areas by visualizing the trend of input topic. However, there are few researches on trend detection in scientific corpora while their proposed models do not appear to be suitable. Previous works lack of an appropriate representation scheme for research topics. This paper describes a method that combines Semantic Web and ontology to support advance search functions such as trend detection in the context of scholarly Semantic Web system (SSWeb).

During this study a Web survey and a follow-up study were conducted using students from University of Strathclyde as a sample population. The Web survey revealed that there were three different types of e-book use in an academic setting: (a) fact finding; (b) finding relevant content; and (c) extended reading. The most popular reason for using ebooks was for “finding relevant content” which indicated that e-books were not read in their entirety but instead were consulted or used for reference purpose. The Web survey finding was then confirmed by the follow-up study. This study is valuable for designing a better ebook features in which they should be designed according to what purpose the e-books are used for (i.e. for reference purpose or extended reading or both). If the e-books are intended to be used for reference purpose, the features might include practical searching and ...
