ABSTRACT

Research paper thumbnail of The influence of lowpass filtering and the effects of fading on the group demodulation of QPSK signals

The influence of the lowpass filter at the front end of a digital group demodulator on the number... more The influence of the lowpass filter at the front end of a digital group demodulator on the number of usable satellite communication channels is discussed. A Monte Carlo simulation study was undertaken using a raised cosine filter as the lowpass filter response. The group demodulator was designed to accommodate 16 channels of quadrature phase shift keying data with a channel spacing equal to twice the symbol rate. In particular, it is shown that the proper design of this lowpass filter can provide several additional channels. The effects of fading and shadowing on the performance of a signal that is group demodulated are also discussed. The results indicate that the inter-channel interference that is present due to the close channel spacing of the signals combines with the fading to produce a severely distorted signal. This indicates that new receiver structures and the introduction of coding will be required to combat the fading, shadowing, and inter-channel interference for land mo...

All computer models for the fading channels are based on the manipulation of a white Gaussian random process. This process is approximated by a sum of sinusoids with random phase angle. These models compare very well with analytical models in terms of their probability distribution of envelope and phase of the fading signal. For the land mobile satellite fading channel, results of level crossing rate and average fade duration are given. These results show that the computer models can provide a good coarse estimate of the time statistic of the faded signal. Also, for the land-mobile-satellite fading channel, the results show that a 3-pole Butterworth shaping filter should be used with the model. An example of the application of the land-mobile-satellite fading-channel model to predict the performance of a differential phase-shift keying signal is described.

Research paper thumbnail of The Minimal Generator Matrix of a Vector Space

Applicable Algebra in Engineering, Communication and Computing, 1999

The atomic vectors of a finitely generated vector space C over a field F are characterized for C ... more The atomic vectors of a finitely generated vector space C over a field F are characterized for C a subspace of the product vector space ? = ∏i =1n ?i over F. For finite fields, the minimal trellis diagram for mixed-codes is determined, and this provides the L-section minimal trellis diagram for linear codes. As an example, an extremely simple yet comprehensive analysis of the trellis structure of Reed-Muller codes is given. In particular, a trellis oriented generator matrix for the 2l -section minimal trellis diagram of a Reed-Muller code is presented.

A generator matrix for the Reed-Muller codes is presented which is in trellis oriented form for the minimal L-section trellis diagram.
