This study aims to assess the undergraduates' knowledge, attitudes, practices and perceived barriers towards research in six Arab countries. Methods A cross sectional study included medical students from six Arab countries, where a self-administered five-section questionnaire was used to assess the students' demographics, knowledge, attitudes, practices and perceived barriers. The questionnaire was distributed in the online educational platforms of the participating medical schools in the six included countries. Results The total sample of recruited students was 2989, the majority of students (91.6%) showed poor level of knowledge regarding research. Generally high levels of positive attitudes towards research, research relevance and usefulness were found, with moderate levels of perception of research anxiety and difficul...

Diabetes has long been considered a major cause of impaired sexual function. Neuropathy, vascular impairment, and psychological complaints have been implicated in the pathogenesis of decreased libido, low arousability, decreased vaginal lubrication, orgasmic dysfunction and dyspareunia among diabetic women. Objective: To investigate sexual dysfunction in diabetic females living at Sohag Governorate. Patients and methods: This case–control hospital-based descriptive study was carried out at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, Sohag University Hospitals on two groups; the case (Diabetic) group and the control (Non-diabetic) group. Each group included 100 sexually active nonpregnant women between 20 to 40 years of age. Their sexual function was assessed using Female Sexual Function Index Questionnaire. Results: The rate of feeling sexually aroused, level of sexual aroused, confidence abou...

This study focuses on the grammatical devices—and semantic distinctions thereof—that are employed by academic writers of English to express stance in research article abstracts in the areas of applied linguistics (AL) and literature (L). To this end, a corpus of 120 research article abstracts (60 in the area of AL and another 60 in that of L) was built and analysed using SPSS and following Biber et al.’s (1999) framework of grammatical devices of stance. The abstracts were extracted from high-quality journals in the respective areas: Applied Linguistics and English: Journal of the English Association. Both are ISI journals and published by Oxford Academic Publishing. A mixed-method approach, applying quantitative and qualitative measures, was adopted to answer the two questions: How is stance grammatically expressed in AL research article abstracts and L research article abstracts, and How is the expression of stance in AL research article abstracts similar to/different from that in L ones? The findings are construed in light of theories of academic discourse and English for Academic Purposes (EAP). The results reveal that there are important similarities and differences in the extent to which and the means through which stance is expressed in AL research article abstracts and L research article abstracts. In particular, the findings show that both AL and L abstracts were similar in the most frequently used stance marker which is the stance complement clause. However, they were different in the frequency of use of other devices. The study provides insights into the ways academic writers express stance in various fields which better our ability to write research article abstracts.

In this paper, we detail an innovative methodology migrating a 2D Process Design Kit (PDK) and its associated standard cells libraries to a M3D CoolCube™ design platform [2]. This methodology exhibits a significant migration runtime reduction almost regardless of the number of design rules and standard cells layout complexity (multi-patterning) in advanced CMOS nodes. This migration allows gate level evaluation through a Power Performance Area (PPA) analysis and is based on the following assumptions and targets: 1) same mask sequence and model cards on both level 2) identical process node, design rules and parameters on both levels 3) cell on cell approach.

This study aims to investigate the pragmalinguistic realisations of the speech act of congratulating in Kabyle and Jordanian Arabic (JA) by comparing the strategies that Kabyle-speaking and JA-speaking students employ when offering congratulations. The data are analysed with reference to social status, gender and cultural background of the participants. A Discourse Completion Test (DCT) which included four situations of different social statuses is used to collect data from 30 JA-speaking students (15 males and 15 females) at the University of Jordan and 30 Kabyle-speaking students (15 males and 15 females) from three different universities in Algeria region of Kabylie. Elwood's (2004) framework is adopted in the classification of strategies. A mixed-method approach is applied in the analysis with the frequency of strategies being quantitatively an...

METHOD Thirteen Muslim Arab American women were interviewed utilizing the consensual qualitative research (CQR) approach. RESULTS Final domains that emerged from the data included conceptualization of racial, ethnic, and religious identity; experiences and effect of microaggressions; and coping strategies. CONCLUSIONS The results document discrimination at the intersection of their multiple identities, a perceived shift in stereotypes from weak and oppressed to anti-American and violent, and within-group discrimination in the form of colorism and judgment. Reported psychological effects of discrimination include internalization of stereotypes, burden to represent all Muslims, rejection of the White racial label, and increased activism. The finding...

The study specifically looks into a number of compliments in Arabic and discusses their translation into English. To achieve this goal, a test was designed by the researchers to examine the translation of 10 compliments that are not familiar to the English language and culture, and these translations were examined with the help of a few native English-speaking colleagues to check their acceptability in stylistic terms. The sample of subjects included 20 female BA students at the University of Jordan; all of them are in their third year. The findings reveal that the participants adopted the techniques of literal translation, paraphrase, addition, and omission when translating culture-bound compliments. They also encountered difficulties relating to grammar, lexical choice, and collocation.

It was aimed to study the effect of mineral, organic fertilization and some foliar application treatments (Effective micro organisms and Agrispon) as well as their interactions on growth, bulb yield and some chemical constituents of onion "behairy red" variety. The obtained results could be summarized as the following: 1-Fertilizing with 100% NPK gave the highest values of plant height and number of leaves after 60 days from transplanting and at harvesting stage in both studied seasons. 2-Fertilizing with 100% NPK has achieved the highest values of fresh and dry weight/ plant after 60 days from transplanting in both seasons.and also gave the highest values of bulb fresh weight in both seasons. 3-The previous treatment achieved the highest values of total bulb yield (t/fed) 4-Concerning N, P and K concentrations in bulbs, data illustrated that fertilizing with 50 % NPK+ 50 % FYM was the highest among the organic and mineral fertilization treatments. 5-Foliar application with Agrispon + EM gave the highest yield (21.94 t/fed) in the both seasons of study.

Specifically, the study explores the functional and structural dimensions of such devices. To achieve this goal, a random sample comprising twelve issues of three local newspapers is selected. The issues are chosen to cover the period from 2014 - 2016. Ninety-six English attention-getting devices are identified for analysis. The findings of the study reveal that English attention-getting devices are used in Jordanian advertising include single words, catchphrases, and slogans. In most cases, these elements are used as persuasive tools that seek to build a positive image of a product, rather than to convey propositional meaning. The findings also show that advertisers make a deliberate linguistic choice of stylistic devices to enhance the memorability of the product advertised. Such a creative use includes lexical, phonological, morphological, syntactic,...
