The complexity and intricacies of construction projects and construction activities have led to t... more The complexity and intricacies of construction projects and construction activities have led to the development of innovative disciplines in the construction industry. These new disciplines with great market opportunities have prompted professional quantity surveyors to acquire new skills different from the core discipline of Quantity Surveying and thereby becoming multiskilling. However, a number of practical challenges stand in the way majority of professionals are employed or are in-between jobs due to financial and time constraints. They can only participate in part-time training which has to be time condensed and affordable financially. Hence this paper considered the effects of multiskilling on professional service delivery and assessed the challenges to the development of multiskilling in Nigeria. The paper adopted questionnaire survey on two separate populations of multiskilled quantity surveyors and registered quantity surveying firms (principal partners) that have diversified professional services. Sampling was done by the use of snowballing technique. The questionnaire was structured on the effects of multiskilling on service delivery and challenges to development of multiskilling in Nigeria, The data collected were analysed using Mean Item Score (MIS) and one way analysis of variance. The paper revealed that multiskilling enhanced quality of service delivery and job coordination while the challenges to the development of multiskilling in Nigeria are cost implication of engaging multiskilled personnel, job/task-based requirements and pride of professional association. The paper concluded that professional services are knowledge intensive based and professionals are required to supply product (services) which are primary source of information and knowledge to its end-users. The paper recommended that quantity surveying firms, being classified as a Small-Medium Enterprise (SME) should embrace multiskilling strategy and service diversification as a means of sustaining the business.

This paper thusly, x-rayed the outcomes of unethical practices by Quantity Surveyors in the construction industry in Nigeria, and likewise displays more scholarly and practical approach in dealing with moral appraisal of Quantity Surveyors in the construction industry and ways to improve moral standard among them. It is generally known that this software is not cheap and they require special skill to use. This research study is aimed at developing a computerised template for material and labour schedules for some selected items of work in construction using Microsoft Excel. This is an inexpensive way of estimating to save cost while eliminating the traditional method. Contingency fund is allowed in the cost estimate to cater for risks which always lead to addition... more Contingency fund is allowed in the cost estimate to cater for risks which always lead to additional cost. The study used archival data to assess the accuracy of contingency sum and utilization among various types of claims. Data collected were analysed using percentile and Pearson's coefficient of correlation. The study reveals that the current allowance as contingency is 5% of the base line estimates while additional cost is 18% which implies a shortfall of 13%. Furthermore, the study shows that the relationship among contingencies, base line estimates and final cost is statistically significant at 0.01. The study concludes that using percentage in allocating contingency based on subjective approach or at the discretion of the consultants is grossly inadequate. The study recommends that allocation of contingency sum should be based on cost analysis of similar completed projects and that a realistic contingency sum should be about 20% of the base line estimate.
