However, high cost and exhaustive reserves of traditional used feldspars limits their use. The study of the fluxing potential of granitic rock wastes and basalts and their effect on properties and microstructure of porcelain tiles was carried out. The addition of the basalt in the amount of 7.5 wt.% leads to the best densification behavior and near-zero water absorption of the samples. The properties of porcelain tiles with addition of basalt and granitic rock wastes show the possibility of their limit use as fluxes in ceramic tiles industry.

This allows us to consider this region as a stratotype area. In order to update the paleontological characteristics of the Vendian, organic-walled microfossils from the Bogushevsk-1, Bogushevsk-2 (Liozno), and Lepel-1 reference boreholes drilled in the north of the Orsha Depression were studied. The transitive assemblage I with Leiosphaeridia minutissima-Leiosphaeridia tenuissima was recognized in the Lower Vendian Liozno Formation of the Volyn Series and the Upper Vendian Kotlin Formation. The Redkino microfossil assemblages were identified at three stratigraphic levels in the Nizy, Selyava, and Chernitsa formations: assemblage II with Morania zinkovi, assemblage III with Morania zinkovi-Tynnia precambrica, and assemblage IV with Morania zinkovi-Tynnia precambrica-Striatella coriacea, respectively. The Kotlin assemblage V with Vendotaenia antiqua-Primoflagella speciosa was distinguished in the upper part of the Kotlin Formation (Bogushevsk-1 borehole). On the basis of the taxonomic composition, assemblages III and IV are correlated with the first Redkino biota of the Starorusskaya Formation; assemblage V is correlated with the third Kotlin biota of the Vasileostrovskaya Formation of the northwestern part of Russia. Our data show a high biostratigraphic potential of organic-walled microfossils, which should be used to substantiate regional stratigraphic units of the Upper Vendian in the updated stratigraphic scheme of the East European Platform.

Research paper thumbnail of Amphibole-rich xenoliths from Devonian igneous rocks of the Pripyat rift, Southeastern Belarus: a window into cratonic lower-crust–upper-mantle boundary

Mineralogy and Petrology, 2021

To obtain new insights into the composition and geological history of the crust–mantle boundary b... more To obtain new insights into the composition and geological history of the crust–mantle boundary beneath a continental rift, we have investigated a suite of amphibole-rich xenoliths in comparison with amphibole-bearing granulite xenoliths, and amphibole megacrysts from Devonian volcanic rocks of the Pripyat rift in Belarus, East European Craton (EEC), for mineralogy, geochemistry and Sr–Nd isotope composition. Hornblendite, clinopyroxene hornblendite and hornblende melagabbro xenoliths are characterised by cumulate textures. Amphibole is mostly zoned magnesio-hastingsite. Two types of melts in equilibrium with this amphibole were calculated: those having more primitive composition than the host rocks of the hornblendite xenolith and those having composition similar to the host rocks of the clinopyroxene hornblendite and hornblende melagabbro xenoliths. Sr–Nd-isotopic compositions of these xenoliths confirm their affinity with the Devonian igneous rocks of the Pripyat rift. Temperature and pressure conditions were estimated as 1056 °C–1083 °C and 12–14 kbars for the clinopyroxene hornblendite xenolith, 1022 °C–1039 °C and 12–15 kbars for the hornblende melagabbro xenolith, and 1050 °C–1065 °C and 13–14 kbars for the cores of the amphibole megacrysts. The hornblendite xenolith represents a cumulate from an earlier batch of ultramafic alkaline magma, the clinopyroxene hornblendite xenolith could be a cumulate derived from the erupted Devonian alkaline magmas, and the hornblende melagabbro probably was crystallised from an unerupted batch of more-evolved magma. A granoblastic garnet–biotite–amphibole xenolith is composed mostly of unzoned ferrisadanagaite amphibole. Its bulk rock multielement pattern has positive large-ion lithophile element (LILE) and negative high field strength element (HFSE) anomalies. Mineral chemistry and bulk rock Sr–Nd isotope compositions indicate a Palaeoproterozoic granulite protolith, similar to suprasubduction magmatic rocks of the nearby ~ 2.0–1.95-Ga old Osnitsk–Mikashevichi Igneous belt (OMIB). Based on our results, we proposed a model for the evolution of the crust–mantle boundary beneath the Pripyat rift. The crust–mantle boundary beneath the Pripyat rift was formed during the Palaeoproterozoic (2.0–1.95-Ga) orogeny by emplacement of a mafic underplate and was reworked by subsequent post-orogenic events. Magmatism during Devonian rifting introduced hornblendite veins and amphibole-rich bodies, while amphibole-producing metasomatism developed from intraplate rift-related magmatism.

In Ukraine, the volcanogenic sequence is subdivided into suites called Zabolottya, Babyne and Ratne, which together with the lowermost terrigeneous Gorbashy suite comprise the Volyn series. Magmatic zircons from one high-Ti basalt sample yielded an age of 573 ± 14 Ma, whereas grains isolated from a rhyolitic dacite yielded an age of 571 ± 13 Ma. Baddeleyite from the olivine dolerite sample gave an older 206 Pb/ 238 U age of 626 ± 17 Ma, whereas the 207 Pb/ 206 Pb weighted average age of 567 ± 61 Ma is close to the zircon ages. Zircons separated from the other basaltic samples are much older and crystallized at c.

Stratified structures and intrusive complexes of the Vendian trap formation found in the adjacent territories of both countries were compared and correlated. The petrological, geochemical and formational rock belonging was specified; petrochemical types of traps – normal picrobasalts and Mg-rich subalkaline olivine basalts were distinguished as the new ones for Belarus. The correlation performed allowed the authors to estimate the duration of a break in the province magmatic activity at about 2 Ma and to suggest that the formation of traps near the upper and lower parts of the Vendian took place about 555 Ma ago. The practical importance of the correlation performed is the comparison of copper-bearing horizons of the stratiform type found in different traps withing the adjacent territories of Ukraine and Belarus.

Komarovka 91ç/10 borehole has been executed on the basis of the lithologic, petrographic, palaeonto-
logical, geochemical and pyrolytic studies of rocks and geophysical borehole log data, and their correlation
with the known sections of closely located boreholes of the northwest of the Volyn Monocline was made.
Facies depositional environments were specified; prospects of finding hydrocarbon deposits were
assessed. The materials presented in the paper provided the more comprehensive description of the
geological structure of the area under study and supplemented the palaeontological and lithologic
characteristics of some stratigraphic subdivisions distinguished there and can be used as well at planning
geological surveying within the sheet M 34-VI ( ).

Key words: Belarus, the Volyn-Brest magmatic province, Neoproterozoic, mineralogy, geoch... more Key words: Belarus, the Volyn-Brest magmatic province, Neoproterozoic,
mineralogy, geochemistry, dacites, titanium zonation, basaltic magma,
contamination, plume-lithospheric interaction, mantle sources.
Object of investigation: magmatic and tuffaceous rocks of the trappean
formation of the Vendian of Belarus.
Purpose of investigation: to reveal the geochemical specificity of magmatic
rocks, to carry out the petrologic and geochemical reconstruction of evolution of
basaltic melts and the composition of mantle sources within the framework of a
conception of the plume-lithospheric interaction.
Methods of investigation: polarizing, ore and electron microscopy; microprobe
sounding and X-ray analyses of minerals; determination of the rock chemical
composition by XRF, NAA, ICP-MS methods; determination of Sr- and Nd- isotopic
composition; modelling of the fractional crystallization of magmas by the
COMAGMAT 3.0 program.
Results and novelty: 1) the petrochemical types of magmatic rocks have been
distinguished, and the laws governing their spatial localization have been revealed; 2)
low- and moderately- high-Ti subalkalic basalts, low- and high-Ti tholeiitic basalts
have been revealed, zonal pattern of their distribution was established; the genesis of
low-Ti rocks was determined to be caused by the core contamination and a
component of the continental lithosphere present in the magmatic source; 3)
mechanisms of the evolution of the basaltic melts are as follow fractional
crystallization under the QFM buffer conditions, assimilation and core
contamination; 4) two components established in the mantle source composition of
basaltic magmas are as follow: plume (convecting sublithospheric РМ-type reservoir)
and lithospheric (metasomatized ЕМ-type continental lithosphere); 5) acidic rocks of
the formation are the products of the mixed subalkalic basaltic magma with "melts"
from the material of the upper core of the region; 6) the native copper and zeolitic
mineralization have been investigated for the first time in the rocks of the formation.
Degree of application: 1) scientific aspect – understanding of the geological
history of evolution of the western margin of the East European Platform in the
Neoproterozoic; 2) applied aspect – application of the results of research in
geological enterprises, which is confirmed by four certificates of industrial
introduction of scientific achievements.
Field of application: geochemistry, petrology, geological searches for
minerals.
