Art itself constitutes a rather wide and versatile field of play where implications far outrun manifestations accessible to human perception at any given time. In other words, a work of art could effectively communicate different messages in terms of depth and intent to a diverse “audience ” at any given period. Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.[1] Art has been defined as “symbolic statements of ideas, using sensory stimulus to make their presentation.”[2] This definition of art presents some assumptions that may not enjoy universal acceptance. Identifying symbols as expressions of art and ideas as the sole source from which such expressions are sourced could prove problematic. Art may be expressed through the aid of symbols but is not limited to it neither do ideas constitute the sole source from which expressions of art emanate. Th...

Healing in African indigenous cultures is a corporate matter involving the totality of the person... more Healing in African indigenous cultures is a corporate matter involving the totality of the person, family and community. Healing presupposes sickness; its practice is therefore interlocked with a people’s conception of sickness and diseases. In Africa, sickness is an attestation to the fact that an individual is out of tune with nature and the supernatural, which is represented by the various deities. The physical signs are therefore a part of the story and not the whole story. Similarly, the Christian conception of disease and healing is intertwined with the individual’s relationship with the supernatural and the physical signs are but part of the story. Diagnosis and prescription for treatment and healing take into cognizance all these facts and this is where the healer comes in. The healer constitutes an integral part of the patient’s healing in Yoruba religion as well as in African Christianity. There are female and male healers in both religions but whereas these specialists ar...

My resolve on this approach is informed by the pervasive religiosity of the Nigerian nation and by the minimal attention accorded religion in policy formation and Nigerian women. The correlation between philosophy and religion mandates the serious consideration of religion in policy formation and execution. One foremost example is the case of Kwara State’s health sector, especially noticeable in policies concerning child and maternal mortality. I intend to investigate the underlining principles among the people for certain practices that have presented serious challenges to health care policies and their implementation. While three major religions of Nigeria are adequately represented in Ilorin, Islam prevails over Ch...

This study argues that internal mechanisms that originate from the people's philosophy and culture are potent tools to sustain peaceful coexistence between them. The research designs are quantitative and qualitative and data were gathered from participant observations, questionnaires, and interviews. Findings show that government interventions have not been perfectly enforced, hence recurring conflicts. The study concludes that crises are imminent where population growth is without corresponding economic empowerment and socio-cultural integration among the people. Previous research efforts confirm that African conflicts often occur due to the combination of poverty and weak States and institutions. However, data from this research confirm that collaborations and consensus are potent tools to entrench peace in Share and Tsaragi communities.

Journal of World Christianity, 2012

I... more The place and role of women in Christianity have been marked by dynamic experiences in Nigeria. It is suffice to note that the gender paradigm at the advent of Christianity in Nigeria is no longer tenable. This is due mainly to the influence of culture as a potent negotiating tool for women in the church. Presently, women have gained remarkable visibility in the church in Nigeria through roles including presiding clergy, church founders, choir leaders and church council members to mention a few. However, a new dimension to the experience of women in their interaction with the divine is the Daughters of Deborah International Ministry, Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. The ministry provides avenues for women from the three broad divisions of churches in Nigeria to access the divine. These classifications of churches are: Orthodox/Mission, African Independent, and Pentecostal/Charismatic churches. DODIM as the ministry is known creates forum of meetings for women from these different churches in a non-structural setting. Again, these forums are managed by women for women focussing mainly on women issues. This provides a rare opportunity for women solidarity, networking and experience sharing in Christianity. Methodology for this paper will be phenomenological with interviews and participant observations as tools of research. This paper attempts to contribute significantly to literature on women in religion in Nigeria.

The need for such study arises from the imperative desire of the African to relinquish the post of onlooker in worship and adopt that of participant. To effectively achieve this, certain aspects of African culture are synchronized with the redemptive message. One of the primary ways in which African culture influences Christianity is through the use of language, which itself has various forms. The purpose of this paper is to unearth the influence of some aspects of Yorùbá command language on prayers, music and worship in Christianity in Africa. An attempt will be made to analyse the components of Yorùbá command language, and compare them with the language of prayer, music and worship of African Christianity. For the purpose of this paper, African Christianity refers to the Christianity practised within the African milieu, characterized by the use of some aspects of African culture. African Christianity has a paradigm, the African Independent Churches, or Aládùúrà Churches. Sources include scholarly literature, songs on cassettes and prayers recorded during fieldwork.

Together they are influencing the way Yoruba people practice their Christianity. In traditional Yoruba religion, women are its majority membership and sustaining force. Consequently, women play leadership roles in Yoruba religion, especially as concerns ritual. These positive roles for women have also been incorporated into Yoruba Christianity. Women are therefore involved in the re-imagining of Christianity and in transforming its patriarchal practices to make them more female-friendly and inclusive.
