Also, previous studies portray management and use of digital collections as challenges to information seekers, information users, information managers, and information handlers from previous century. This study is concerned with the effective management and use of digital collections using institutional repository as a conceptual framework. In this study, Institutional Repository is considered as an effective means of collating, organizing, preserving and disseminating scholarly publication of a definite set of individual or group in digital form. The study was necessitated by the numerous benefits of digital collections to the quality of scholarly activities conducted by academic staff at this present age known as digital / electronic era. The primary aim of this research exercise is to determine the perceptions of academic staff towards developing and use of institutional repository in Nigerian universities.
To achieve the aim and objectives of this explorative research, the case study research method was adopted and used during the conduct of the research activities. University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos were used as case study while the entire academic staff of the selected universities serve as the population to the study. The sample population of the study is a proportion of the academic staff of the selected universities. A structured questionnaire was designed to serve as the instrument to be used in collecting data from the respondents. For a comprehensive research exercise, a thorough literature review was conducted on “Institutional Repository”; “Academic Staff” and “Scholarly Publications”. Data collected during the research exercise were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences {SPSS} where and when applicable. The study also made use of simple percentage, table, graph, pie and bar charts to present data elicited during the research exercise where and when applicable.
In conclusion, the study affirms that awareness of the existence and the benefits of institutional repository is the most essential requirement for variable among the variables of this study. The study thereby recommends that institutions should send more time, effort and resources towards sensitizing the academic staff on the existence and benefits of making use of institutional repository.
