Environmental regulations, the desire for market leadership and social stewardship along with pre... more Environmental regulations, the desire for market leadership and social stewardship along with pressing environmental crises have shifted manufacturing industries from focusing on traditional, purely profit-based strategies into pursuing the sustainability of manufactured products and manufacturing processes. However, assessing the sustainability levels of manufacturing industries poses a challenge due to the lack of holistic methods when in performing such assessments. In this area, current literature has embarked on computing an aggregate index for assessing sustainability performance. Nevertheless, approaches in computing sustainable manufacturing index are scarce in the literature. This paper presents a preliminary framework for computing a sustainable manufacturing index using the analytic hierarchy process. In this context, sustainability is interpreted from a triple-bottom line approach and the set of elements that comprise the index obtained from the US National Institute of Standards and Technology sustainable manufacturing repository. The use of this repository highlights a holistic approach in aggregate index computation as it offers a comprehensive list of elements of the triple-bottom line within the context of the manufacturing industry. Preliminary results have provided valuable insights into measuring sustainable manufacturing levels and could serve as a basic framework for index computation. The contribution of this work is on presenting a simple yet holistic approach towards computing a sustainable manufacturing index.

The challenge lies in embedding sustainability to the usual competitive orientation of manufacturing firms. Thus, this paper proposes a framework in formulating a sustainable manufacturing strategy which is grounded on sustainability without disregarding the internal and external competitive functions of manufacturing. The proposed framework attempts to integrate classical theories on manufacturing strategy and the current demands on sustainable manufacturing in an attempt to formulate a sustainable manufacturing strategy that describes two distinct functions of manufacturing -competitiveness and sustainability. The relevance of the framework lies in its capacity to be quantitatively explored using different tools, such as multi-criteria decision-making methods. Issues and relationships of different components of the framework are presented in this paper. The contribution of this work is on the integration of sustainability and manufacturing strategy into a holistic framework that highlights both the sustainability and the competitive functions of manufacturing.

Evaluation of text entry methods in literature mainly considers speed and accuracy. This study presents an alternative means for selecting text entry method that considers user preference. A case study was carried out with a group of experts who were asked to develop a selection decision model of five text entry methods. The decision problem is flexible enough to reflect interdependencies of decision elements that are necessary in describing real-life conditions. Results showed that QWERTY method is more preferred than other text entry methods while arrangement of keys is the most preferred criterion in characterizing a sound method. Sensitivity analysis using simulation of normally distributed random numbers under fairly large perturbation reported the foregoing results reliable enough to reflect robust judgment. The main contribution of this paper is the introduction of a multi-criteria decision approach in the preference evaluation of text entry methods.

Two directions of research emerged in this domain: the simulation approach and the fuzzy set theory (FST) approach. In this paper, we propose the integration of these two approaches in the context of AHP/ANP to elucidate group decision-making problems. FST is used to handle impreciseness of judgments of individual decision-maker while simulation is used to capture uncertainty brought about by the variability and randomness in aggregating decision-makers' judgments. These processes are applied at the level of the pairwise comparisons matrices in order to maintain the integrity of the general methodology of the AHP/ANP. The contribution of this work is on developing a methodology that addresses uncertainty both in individual and in group decision-making. The general framework and the detailed methodology are presented in this work. A simple case is used to show the computations.

As various issues on sustainable development were raised, several discourses in literature emerge which provide conceptual and philosophical approaches on the notion of sustainable development. This paper presents a philosophical framework on technology and its links to the current views of sustainable development. It highlights that the current view of sustainability supports the development of technology as substitute capital of natural resources for generations to come. This stimulates philosophical questions regarding our view of technology and natural resource. It is maintained that fundamental change is prescribed on two significant areas: our behavior towards technology and our perspectives on sustainable development. The contribution of this work lies in providing an approach that promotes sustainable development by way of changing our perspectives on the development of technology and its use.

With this, the industry adopts a wirepull test (WPT) that measures the wirebond strength. It is thus important to evaluate the variability of the data obtained in WPT so that these approximate the actual wirebond strength and the variability caused by the measurement systems must be kept insignificant. Since, WPT involves procedures, intstruments and operators, measurement systems analysis (MSA) is a helpful tool in determining the validity of the measurement system. Thus, this paper presents a case study on the use of MSA in WPT of a wirebonding process in a leading semiconductor manufacturing firm in central Philippines. Results are reported in this work.

A simple manufacturing system is considered with single product that is processed through pre-defined task sequence of known tasks, transactional and material handling times. The lot size problem yields a nonlinear optimization model whose solution satisfies the Kuhn-Tucker necessary and sufficient conditions. Results show that lot size is a function of the demand, the transactional activities and the length of the material handling times at the constraint task, and the sum of unconstrained task times. When transactional and material-handling times are considered, optimal lot size is independent of the longest task time but dependent on the sum of the processing times of the unconstrained tasks. The main contribution of this paper is the proposed method of minimizing makespan without spending resources in improving the constraint task but instead, considers developing an optimal lot size. This paper poses relevant applications especially for high-volume manufacturing systems.
