[13.1078α20-b1] A Philosophical and Mathematical Model of Truth or #New Organon Back in the early '90's, the great logician, Graeme Forbes, with impeccable Balliol irony, had a one-panel comic taped to his office door which crudely depicted Rodin's The Thinker above the caption, "Aristotle Trying to Think of Frege." Naturally, this suggested the straightforward doctoral project of thinking my way back in the other direction, from the principle results of Mathematical Logic to somewhere in the vicinity of Metaphysics Μ & Ν. Sometime around 1996, my resulting dissertation prospectus was approved by Graeme and a committee of readers with the modest title, "A Philosophical and Mathematical Theory of Truth." Alas, in temperament, I have always been more like the mad Wittgenstein than the stoic Frege, while in techné, more like the foolhardy Xenophon than the careful Plato, so the project took 20 years. Nevertheless, it has now been completed as promised with the small exception that, instead of a theory of truth, it became a model. Rather, twenty years ago I loosed that arrow of truth and now it is up to the careful reader to see how close I have come to my mark. Definition 1: #NewOrganon is a model of Truth, T = <D, I>, such that every wellformed formula on this page is a member of D, as well as every well-formed formula hyperlinked to any member of D, and I is the interpretation function defined below.

Regeneration in human liver is characterized in part by theformation ofductular structures, so-ca... more Regeneration in human liver is characterized in part by theformation ofductular structures, so-caUled ductular bepatocytes in massive hepatic necrosis and bile ductules in mechanical biliary obstruction. In an attempt to characterize the liver regenerative process, we performed image analysis and immunohistochemical staining of the ductular structures in these weU defined human liver disorders, 13 cases of massive bepatic necrosis and 9 cases of mechanical biliary obstruction. The proliferation index was determined and the expression ofseveral antigens was localized by immunohistochemical staining using antibodies to a-fetoprotein, a-i-antitrypsin, albu-min, and cytokeratin 19. The ductular structures in adult human liver were compared with the developing ductalplates in 1 fetal livers, ranging in agefrom 9 to 36 weeks ofgestation. Image analysis demonstrated that the mean total area, mean nuclear area, and mean ceUsize ofductular hepa-tocytes were significantly larger than those ofbile ductules (p < 0.05). The proliferation index of ductular hepatocytes and bile ductules was significantly higher than that of hepatocytes ofnor-mal livers (p < 0.02). Bile ducts, bile ductules in mechanical biliary obstruction, ductular hepato-cytes in massive hepatic necrosis, and the ductal plate ceUs infetal liver showed strong stainingfor cytokeratin 19, which characterizes intermediate filaments associated with bile duct epithelial cells. Albumin, a liver-specific protein, and a-i-antitrypsin, a protease inhibitor, were strongly expressed in ductalplate ceUs offetal liver, hepa-tocytes, and ductular hepatocytes, whereas bile duct ceUs and bile ductules were negativefor al-bumin. In summary, ductular hepatocytes demonstrate morphometric and immunophenotypic features of both hepatocytes and biliary epithe-lial ceUs, whereas bile ductules share characteristics primarily with fetal ductal plates and mature bile ducts. These findings suggest that ductular hepatocytes in massive hepatic necrosis may serve as bipotentialprogenitor cells, and bile ductules in mechanical biliary obstruction are related to ductalplates offetal liver. (AmJPathol 1995, 147:397-404) Hepatocytes, bile duct epithelial cells, and hepatic progenitor or stem cells maintain the potential to multiply during adult life. Depending on the type of the injurious agent, the nature of liver disease or the number of hepatocytes lost, liver regeneration may occur by at least two mechanisms.1-3 First, adult differentiated hepatocytes maintain the capability for several rounds of replication and respond quickly to liver damage associated with mild to moderate hepato-cyte loss. Second, several lines of evidence suggest that liver regeneration in viral or toxin-induced massive hepatic necrosis (MHN) may originate from progenitor cells and lead to the generation of ductular hepatocytes (DH). We introduced this term to describe ductular structures composed of relatively small cells with oval nuclei and prominent nucleoli with poorly defined lumen and without basement membranes45 (Figure 1A). In MHN, DH are located around portal tracts and extend into the necrotic lob-ules. Analogous to oval cells in the rat,6 DH may have the capacity to differentiate into parenchymal hepa-tocytes or bile duct cells.2 DH, also called neocholan-gioles7 or biliary hepatocytes, are probably derived from hepatic progenitor cells. We report a case of extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue... more We report a case of extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) type of the sali-vary gland arising in a background of chronic sclerosing si-aladenitis. Chronic sclerosing sialadenitis is a common fibros-ing chronic inflammatory lesion of the submandibular gland, which is thought to be the result of sialolithiasis, and is not associated with a systemic autoimmune disease. Salivary MALT lymphomas are typically associated with lymphoepithe-lial sialadenitis (LESA) in a patient with or without Sjögren's syndrome. Our case of salivary MALT lymphoma was neither preceded by Sjögren's syndrome nor accompanied by LESA. This case suggests that chronic inflammatory processes other than Sjögren's syndrome may provide a substrate for the development of MALT lymphoma.

In characterizing the cell-cycle regulatory role of the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor, p27kip... more In characterizing the cell-cycle regulatory role of the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor, p27kip I, it was discovered that p27 knockout mice exhibit pronounced multi-organomegaly with no increased spontaneous carcinogenesis in the liver. This suggested that p27 manipulation could improve the success ofhepatocyte transplantation. It was then shown that donor hepatocytes from p27 knockout mice more actively proliferate and rescue liver failure in the FAH mouse modeL These results were limited by the fact that p27 was suppressed throughout the donor animal from early embryogenesis and the risk ofcarcinogenesis due to long-term p27 absence was not determined. In this proposal we develop three new techniques for targeting p27 in the mouse liver. Mxl-Cre transgenic mice will allow us to knockout p27 in the liver alone at controlled timepoints of hepatogenesis. The tetracycline-controlled overexpression ofthe F-box protein Skp2 will allow us to lower p27 protein abundance in the hepatocytes for desired periods oftime. Finally, the tetracycline-controlled expression short hairpin RNA structures (shRNAs) will allow us to knockdown p27 in the hepatocytes. Skp2 and p27 shRNA expression will also be delivered to wild type primary hepatocytes in culture by an advanced lentivirus vector, which can be directly applicable to human hepatocytes. With these new appr<?aches ofp27 inactivation, we will determine the role ofp27 in hepatocyte transplantation and hepatocellular carcinogenesis in more clinicallyrelevantsettings. Theresultswillgiveusaclearassessment ofthepotentialbenefits ofp27 suppression in the treatment ofhuman liver failure.

For Hadley Arkes has always displayed that mark which I have found in Leo Strauss's finest students. That is, his passionate dedication to the Good and Noble things has always been mirrored in both his words and his deeds. As today's youths might say, "He talks the talk and walks the walk." So, as a Crypto-Straussian tribute to the man who first named for me those great constellations of aporia, I would like to share a little secret gleaned from a lifetime in some of the more esoteric corners of the tradition. That is, I do not believe that the Age of Originalism perished with that Titan, the late, Hon. Antonin Scalia (May Minos and Rhadamanthus have mercy on his eternal soul!) Rather, I believe that when the records of these dark and dangerous times become digitalized and searchable, that future Data Archeologists, or Google Epistemologists, or Neo-Pythagorean Psycho-historians, or whatever they decide to call themselves, will point back to the then-meaningless string of 13 symbols which was coded into the ordinal center of U. S. Supreme Court 12-10508 10-24-13 Petition for Rehearing as the point when the forgotten, xenophonic intentions of the Founders came to fruition. For at that exact moment, through a simple application of Fregean Logic, Natural Right and Reason were united in an instrument of constitutional power as a generalizable solution to the problem of Thrasymachus for an enlightened information society. Because, you see, that is precisely how Truth reveals itself in Nature, obliquely. Of course, not even the Gods can see what will happen next, but no doubt wise Professor Arkes and all good Wilsonians will soon be in high demand at this glorious dawn of the new Age of Kronos.
