Introduction: The incidence of thyroid cancer in patients surgically treated for hyperthyroidism ... more Introduction: The incidence of thyroid cancer in patients surgically treated for hyperthyroidism has increased in recent years. Most of these cases are composed of small tumors that are found only in the pathological analyze, which implies a big challenge for the head and neck surgeon. objective: To evaluate the relationship between hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancer. method: A retrospective study of patients operated in a single institution between 2004 and 2010. We identified 1133 patients underwent thyroidectomy of whom 761 cases were analyzed. Patients were divided into two groups, with and without diagnosis of hyperthyroidism. Chart review was performed with assessment of clinical and pathological variables. Statistical analysis of data was performed. Results: Among the patients studied, 8.3% had diagnosis of hyperthyroidism. Of these, 39.7% had Graves’ disease, 49,2% toxic multinodular goiter and 11.1% Plummer’s disease. The incidence of cancer was 20.6% in patients with hyperthyroidism and 38.7% in patients without (p=0.024). Patients with hyperthyroidism showed higher incidence of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (p=0.011) and thyroiditis (p=0.02), lower sensitivity for detecting malignancy in fine needle aspiration (50%) and frozen section (25%). Most patients underwent total thyroidectomy, except for patients with Plummer’s disease (p<0.01). Conclusion: In our series the patients with hyperthyroidism had lower incidence of malignancy, and were mainly affected by papillary thyroid microcarcinoma. In most cases diagnose was done only in pathological analyses. Fine needle aspiration and frozen section examination showed low sensitivity for diagnosis of malignancy in this group.

The data from 57 students were analyzed. Data sources included survey instruments, ranking questions, and project grades. The research highlights important components of online education by evaluating the connections between students' perceptions of web-intensive course value, SRL, and project performance. Findings show a significant positive relationship between task value and performance, specifically between importance of the activity and performance. From a SRL perspective, the results show a positive correlation between goal setting and performance. Significant positive correlations were also found between task value and goal setting, task strategies, help seeking, and self-evaluation. Discussion and recommendat...

These materials and strategies are designed to replace traditional note-taking practices or standard guided notes used in most engineering courses and stimulate students to actively engage in meaningful learning activities. The enhanced guided notes (EGN) developed by this study include two additional components that are not present in the standard guided notes. First, the EGN will include questions that prompt students to assess their metacognitive knowledge. Second, the EGN will be further enhanced through the inclusion of outside class activities. This requires students to share notes made during lectures with their friends by using a tablet format computer and an online uploading document mechanism. Six research questions were constructed to guide this study. The...

Monte Carlo (MC) methods are considered one of the most powerful and precise approaches to study ... more Monte Carlo (MC) methods are considered one of the most powerful and precise approaches to study and solve medical physics issues. They, indeed, can be applied in all the situations where to use deterministic algorithms is infeasible or impossible. Surprising improvements in computer technology have promoted a wide diffusion of this technique, giving rise to the born of several Monte Carlo codes, such as the GEANT4 toolkit. In this paper we show some of the applications we developed using GEANT4. In particular, the simulation of two different radiotherapy techniques, such as proton/ion therapy and stereotactic radiosurgery will be discussed. In the first case we show the main features of our last public version of the GEANT4 Hadrontherapy program, also discussing the issues related to the nuclear fragmentation. In the second case, we show the procedures followed for the simulation of a Gamma Knife device, in order to validate the Treatment Planning System (TPS) used for the dose com...

Twenty-nine students at one Colorado high school participated in this study. Students worked individually in the Architectural Design class (n=7), and in teams in the Robotics Design class (n=22). To capture students' perceptions of their understanding of the task, planning strategies, and cognitive strategies, the Engineering Design Questionnaire (EDQ) was used. The development of the EDQ was guided by Butler and Cartier's Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) model. Besides the EDQ, a Web-based Engineering Design Notebook was developed to facilitate students reporting planning activities and engineering design strategies. Graphical views are used to present quantitative and qualitative analysis of data collected in this study. In addition, the mean scores of design phases (i.e., SRL dimensions) were compared across SRL features (i.e., task interpretation, planning strategies, and cognitive strategies). From the analysis, the findings suggest that the level of understanding of the task were high in problem definition, conceptual design, and preliminary design. In contrast, students were found to be lacking on those three design process components in the area of planning strategies. Students performed well in cognitive strategies except for problem definition.

Although information and communication technologies (ICT) have been widely used in secondary schools and in higher education institutions in Indonesia, there is still limited information regarding students’ computer self-efficacy. In Indonesia, ICT is not only used to support student’s learning, but it also is used as an assessment/evaluation tool, not only at schools but also at the regional and national levels. One hundred and thirty-five secondary school students participated and completed the adapted version of the computer self-efficacy (CSE) scale. The participants were students from three different demographic regions. In the study, the researchers collected quantitative and qualitative data. While the quantitative data were collected from the CSE questionnaire, the qualitative data were gathered from open-ended questio...

Unfortunately, numerous studies reported that students only have a partial understanding of the information presented in the problem description, including in computer science. This study assesses students' task and revised-task interpretations when working on an object-oriented design problem. Multiple qualitative case study research was used in this study. Two male and two female senior computer science students at Utah State University, USA, volunteered as participants. They were asked to solve five programming problems while thinking aloud, complete surveys, and answer several interview questions. The study found that the participants were able to identify most of the essential information after the initial reading of the problem description. They strategically ignore detailed information that may affect their design decisions and update it throughout their problem-solving enterprise.

Therefore, it is an urgent need to have proper idea about the effect of drought stress on crop plants for getting stable production through research intervention. Water deficit due to drought stress influences a wide range of plant processes, from whole plant growth and development to the molecular regulation of essential transcriptional pathways, and thus significantly impacts both physiology and metabolism. The studies about the changes in behavior of crop plants under drought condition have progressed at a rapid pace and extensive results of such analysis have been made public through various research articles, which can now be easily accessed through the World Wide Web. This review describes some aspects of drought induced effect of drought stress on different important traits of crop plants.

Engineering students are expected to demonstrate their ability to apply that knowledge through various activities such as problem solving, design, and experimental activities during their study. In professional engineering practices, engineers are challenged to solve real-world problems that generally involve certain levels of task ambiguity and complexity. Moreover, they are often obligated to work in a team-based environment. Because of these requirements, engineering students should acquire these skills and demonstrate their ability to apply these skills during their studies. Working on an open-ended task such as designing an engineering artifact is indeed a rich learning experience for students, although they generally receive little direct guidance and instruction from their professors. In order to be successful on such a task, students need to set reasonable goals for themselves and adopt intrinsic standards for success so that they will be able to solve problems strategically. Many studies (Brown, Bransford, Ferrar, & Campione, 1983; Efklides, 2002) have found that students' Research related to this report was conducted in conjunction with the National Center for Engineering and Technology Education (NCETE). Historical wage and incomes data are informative both as normative measures of living standards, ... more Historical wage and incomes data are informative both as normative measures of living standards, and as indicators of patterns of economic development. We show that, given limited historical data, median incomes are most appropriate for measuring welfare and inequality, while urban unskilled wages can be used to test dualist models of development. We present a new dataset including both series in Mexico from 1800 to 2015 and find that both have historically failed to keep up with aggregate growth: per worker GDP is now over eight times higher than in the nineteenth century, while unskilled urban real wages are only 2.2 times higher, and median incomes only 2.0 times. From the perspective of inequality and social welfare, our findings confirm that there is no automatic positive relationship between economic growth and rising living standards for the majority. From the perspective of development, we argue that these findings are consistent with a dual economy model incorporating Lewis...
