Different teaching methods which may either be passive or active are adopted in teaching accounting ethics. Students are not usually required to assess the most effective teaching methods that help them make better ethical decisions. This study assesses the students’ preferences of teaching methods that aid their ethical decision-making process. The opinions of a cohort comprising 245 accounting undergraduates enrolled in an accounting ethics class were examined after being taught an accounting ethics module using both active and passive teaching strategies. The students were required to rank their preferences of the various teaching methods adopted during the ethics instruction. The results revealed that active teaching strategies ranked better which implies that the students preferred the active teaching strategies to the passive ones. Educators should, therefore, ensure that active learning strategies are adopted in teaching ethics because they provide the best medium for communicating ethical instructions and enhancing ethical decision-making.

The ethics intervention curriculum is designed to teach students about ethical behaviour in the workplace. An experiment using final year students at five faith-based private universities in Nigeria was conducted to identify changes in ethical awareness. A pre-test and post-test quasi-experimental design was conducted using ethical vignettes which were administered to both the treatment group and control group to observe for differences in their awareness. This study observed a significant difference in the ethical awareness of the students in the treatment group compared to those in the control group. The study concludes that the ethics intervention curriculum has a positive impact on the ethical awareness of the students. This study exemplifies how an ethics intervention can enhance undergraduate students' awareness of ethical issues that may arise in the workplace.

Research paper thumbnail of Corporate Governance and Earnings Management: Empirical Evidence from Nigeria

Corporate Ownership and Control

Using the Modified Jones model to estimate the discretionary accruals, the study examines whether CEO duality, board size and audit committee independence are able to restrain earnings management practices in the private sector in Nigeria. The results reveal there is a positive significant relationship between the size of the board, return on assets and earnings management. The study proposes that policy makers ensure that firms practise maintaining increasing levels of profits and desist from making losses so as to preclude downward management of earnings. This is essential in the current drive to attract foreign investments into the Nigerian economy.

It examines the extent to which the adopted Codes of Corporate Governance is as a result of international pressures or internally driven by the need for effective accountability to the shareholders, in a way which addresses the peculiar problems of corporate governance in Nigeria. Through the theoretical lens of efficiency gains and social legitmation, the paper found that the Code of Best Practices for Corporate Governance in Nigeria is driven more by social legitimacy pressures while the Code of Corporate Governance for Banks in Nigeria Post Consolidation, developed by the CBN, is predominantly aimed at pursuing efficiency gains.

The paper suggests that given the inappropriateness of the ‘imported’ accountability process used in highly corrupt developing economies, there is the need for these economies to develop effective accounting and auditing infrastucture capable of ensuring a reasonable degree of probity in the accountability process, as well as provide the level of confidence in financial accounting information that will continually attract foreign investments.

Also, the investigation examined the extent to which annual reports now comply with the statements of Accounting Standards issued by the NASB. However, only the first three standards (SAS1, SAS2 and SAS3) which became effective from 1st January 1985, and fall within the scope of this study, were discussed. The issue of application and enforcement of accounting standards was also examined, particularly those factors which make them impracticable for all situations. The benefits and limitations of accounting standards were also discussed. From the analysis of data collected, the investigation reveals that companies in Nigeria are making a very conscious effort to disclose more information (financial and otherwise) about their activities e...

Also, changes in the business and accounting environment call for curricular and pedagogical reform in accounting and auditing education, and for closer collaboration between the academe and practitioners. In response to this challenge, the Coopers & Lybrand ‘Excellence in Audit Education’ programme, a joint venture between the Coopers & Lybrand Foundation and senior auditing academics, was initiated in the US in 1985 to assist accounting departments in identifying and implementing ways to improve auditing education. The C&L Excellence in Audit Education programme is not only innovative in its attempt to bring the richness of auditing experiences to audit education, but also, it is a quality example of academics and practitioners coming together to address issues of mutual concern. The study attempts to provide an explanation for the now repealed "curious" provision of the Companies and Allied Matters Decree (CAMD) No.1 1990 which required auditors' reports to be countersigned by legal practitioners. The study reveals a lack of uniformity in reporting patterns over the 12-year period, and suggests that audit firm characteristics (especially international affiliation of audit firms) appeared to be the most significant factor which influenced not only reporting patterns, but also, the disclosure quality indexes of the auditors' reports. The study indicates that the disclosure quality of the audit reports improved up to the mid-1980s, declined subsequently, and retained a fluctuating pattern. This could have implications for ...
