Queueing models are very suitable for network performance evaluation but the system complexity exponential growth (or state space explosion) could make the analysis barely feasible. The paper presents a comparative study of various methods of a state space reduction for markovian arrival processes (MAP) and phase-type distributions (PH) applied to tandem queueing systems. The applied methods include nonlinear optimization, EM-algorithm and linear minimization. While most of the described algorithms are well-studied, a number of issues arises when applying them to a tandem system of a real wireless network. Particularly, it is shown that while all the algorithms could be applied to tandems with a small number of queues, bigger tandems require additional effort to get the appropriable results. Nevertheless, the results presented show that the departure MAPs reduction may help to solve the state space explosion problem.

Operational mode is changed according to a hysteresis strategy. The system has input of disasters causing all customers to leave the system unserved. The stationary state distribution of the embedded Markov chain and performance characteristics are obtained. The problem of hysteresis control optimization is solved numerically.

Emphasis was made on the models of polling systems used to investigate the wireless broadband networks. The polling systems were classified; presented were stochastic models and methods of investigating discrete-time and continuous-time systems, systems with cyclic, periodic, and random queue polling, as well as the methods of their optimization.

The eigenvalues of the probability translation matrix of a Kolmogorov system with constant input intensities is analyzed. The definition of the transition mode time based on the analysis of the probability translation matrix determinant is introduced for the first time. An analytical solution to the Kolmogorov equation system for a queuing system with piecewise constant arrival and service intensities is found, the solutions for a queuing system with periodic arrival and service intensities are analyzed, and numerical calculations illustrating this approach are presented.

Using the probability generating function method, we obtain the system of the linear algebraic equations for the first and second order moments of the number of packets at an abonent station which allows calculating the mean sojourn time and other performance characteristics. The obtained results are illustrated by numerical estimation of the performance of the IEEE802.11 broadband wireless networks with centralized control.

The matrix method for solving the Kolmogorov equations is proposed. This method makes it possible, in general, to obtain the main characteristics of the considered queuing system in a non-stationary mode: the probability of losses, the time of the transient mode, the throughput, and the number of customers in the system at time t. The developed method is illustrated by numerical calculations of the characteristics of the MAP/M/1/3 system in the transient mode.

Multimedia information is transmitted using two communication lines operating in the hot redundancy mode, namely, an FSO channel and a millimeter radio-frequency channel. In addition, we derive ergodicity conditions for the Markov process describing the system operation and provide some performance characteristics for the hybrid communication channel.

Mode control depends on the queue length at arrival instants defined by a multithreshold strategy. The stationary state probability distribution of the system for fixed thresholds is studied. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the determination of the optimal threshold set in a fixed search domain. 1 1

The arrival of primary customers is described by a batch Markovian arrival process (BMAP), and the service times have a phase-type (PH) distribution. Previously, in the literature, such a system was mainly considered under the strict assumption that the intervals between the repeated attempts from the orbit have an exponential distribution. Only a few publications dealt with retrial queueing systems with non-exponential inter-retrial times. These publications assumed either the rate of retrials is constant regardless of the number of customers in the orbit or this rate is constant when the number of orbital customers exceeds a certain threshold. Such assumptions essentially simplify the mathematical analysis of the system, but do not reflect the nature of the majority of real-life retrial processes. The main feature of the model under study is that we considered the classical retrial strategy...

The server polls the queues in a cyclic way but skips (does not visit) those that were empty when polling them in the previous cycle. We apply the generating function method to derive first and second order moments of the stationary state distribution of the queue length at the polling moments that allows calculating the mean delay in queues. Also we provide numerical results.

Due to the applicability of stochastic polling models, the researchers face new and more complicated polling models. Stochastic polling models are effectively used for performance evaluation, design and optimization of telecommunication systems and networks, transport systems and road management systems, traffic, production systems and inventory management systems. In the review, we separately discuss the results for two-queue systems as a special case of polling systems. Then we discuss new and already known methods for polling system analysis including the mean value analysis and its application to systems with heavy load to approximate the performance characteristics. We also present the results concerning the specifics in polling models: a polling order, service disciplines, methods to queue or to group arriving customers, and a feedback in polling systems. The new direction in the pollin...
