This study aimed to investigate sea fennel essential oils (EOs) from different parts of the plant (flowers, leaves and stems) and the corresponding hydrodistillation by-products (residual water) to validate their potential use and application in different industries. EOs were analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS), while the phenolic profile of the residual water was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and spectrophotometric methods. The EO analysis confirmed the presence of 14 compounds, dominated by sabinene (from 42.55 to 51.47%) and limonene (from 36.28 to 43.58%), while among the 12 detected phenolics, chlorogenic acid and its isomers (cryptochlorogenic and neochlorogenic acid) were found in the highest concentrations. Total phenolic,...

Merill et Perry) were examined. The volatile aglycones were extracted from their nonvolatile glycosidically bound compounds by enzymatic hydrolysis with β -glycosidasae enzyme. The chemical composition analyses of volatile aglycones were run on coupled system gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) with two different polarity columns. All volatile aglycone fractions have complex chemical compositions with identified aliphatic monoterpenic, sesquiterpenic, phenylpropanoid and norisoprenoid alcohols, ethers, acids, esters and carbonyl compounds. The major volatile aglycones are phenylpropanoid compounds. The major basil volatile aglycones are eugenol (44, 0 %) and chavicol (29, 5 %). Of laurel it is benzyl alcohol (63, 4 %), while the major clove volatile aglycone compound is eugenol (80, 5 %). The antioxidant capacity of isolated volatile ...

Superoxide anion radical (O2•-), arising continuously in the cells, is one of the most important and biologically relevant ROS radicals in living organisms. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an enzyme important in the process of cellular responses to stress conditions. Using WST spectrophotometric method, it is investigated the effect of insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) on the SOD expression of tissues in aging rats. For this purpose, rat model for IDDM was established by streptozotocin application. The rats were randomly divided into 4 groups of animals: DM-2W (streptozotocin treated and sacrificed after 2 weeks of diabetes), control-2W (control group sacrificed after 2 weeks of the experiment), DM-1Y (streptozotocin treated and sacrificed after 1 year of diabetes) and control-1Y (control group sacrificed after 1 year of the experiment). Their roles in plants vary from attracting pollinators to a defense against insects, food storage, and adaptations to harsh climate. Since ancient times, EOs are recognized for their medicinal value, representing a valuable source of biologically active compounds. EOs possess various activities including: antimicrobial, antiviral, antioxidant, antitumor, etc. They have also been used as perfumes, flavors for foods and beverages, remedies for the body and mind, and continue to be of paramount importance to date. Having a small molecular weight and lipid solubility, EO constituents possess the ability to pass the blood-brain barrier. Given the complexity of their chemical composition and ability to enter the brain, EOs and their constituents offer a promising strategy for the treatment of various neurological disorders. Alz...

Croatian Adriatic coast and islands are unique and distinctive area, thanks to its general featur... more Croatian Adriatic coast and islands are unique and distinctive area, thanks to its general features, unusual relief features, climate, complicated geological history and the relatively good preservation. Five world areas characterized by a Mediterranean climate, makes 2% of the world area which manages 20% of all known plant species, European Mediterranean with 10% of all known species in only 1.6% of the world surface. The genus Centaurea is one of the largest in the Asteraceae family, containing at least 400 species (even 700). East Anatolia and Transcaucasia are the primary center of the origin and diversification of the genus Centaurea, while the Mediterranean area, including the Balkan Peninsula, is the second one. In Croatia 79 Centaurea taxa have been listed, comprising 27 endemic species. Our preliminary chemical and biological observations, of extracts and volatiles isolated from few endemic species from Centaurea taxa, from Adriatic region showed that there are differences in chemical composition of volatile as well as differences of biological activities between the same species found on different localities. In order to determine whether these differences were generated from different ecological conditions or because of different structure on genetic level, cytogenetic analysis of selected plant species of Centaurea taxa from Croatia were made. Cytogenetic analysis was performed on a sampling covering 28 populations of 9 different Centaurea species among which 4 endemic for Croatia or Croatia and Italy. These species belong to 7 different sections and present four different basic chromosome numbers, x=8, 9, 10 and 11. Two ploidy levels, diploid and tetraploid, were also detected. The nuclear DNA amounts (2C DNA), assessed by flow cytometry, range from 1.63 to 3.61 pg for diploid and to 6.86 pg when including tetraploid species. Intraspecific genome size polymorphism was observed among populations of five out of nine studied species: C. dalmatica, C. ragusina, C. rupestris, C. spinosociliata and C. salonitana. The genome of a tetraploid C. salonitana population was nearly twice that of the diploids. Dysploidy (changement of basic chromosome number) and polyploidy are observed as the main evolutionary mechanisms among studied representatives of the genus Centaurea in Croatia.

This paper deals with its phytochemical and biological profile. Phytochemical profile of volatile oil was performed by the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS), while total phenolic content of its aqueous extract was performed by Folin-Ciocalteu method. The phytochemical analysis showed that the main volatile oil compounds were nonanal (21.2%) and myristicin (16.4%). This oil could be characterized as nonanalmyristicin type. Total phenolic content of aqueous extract was 30.6 ± 1.1 mg GAE/g extract. Results of testing antioxidant potential of E. pumilio volatile oil and aqueous extract showed low antioxidant potentials as tested by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) methods. Results also showed low acetylcholinesterase inhibition potential of volatile oil and low to moderate potential of aqueous extract, as tested by Ellman method.
