The animal world is viewed in the Pahlavi books not only as part of the good creation of Ohrmazd,... more The animal world is viewed in the Pahlavi books not only as part of the good creation of Ohrmazd, but as an essential part of a complex of entities comprising humans, animals and plants, with the main non-organic elements of the material world completing the circle of creation. The good animal«: stand in symmetrical relationship to humanity. The creation of the Primal Bovine is parallel to that of the creation of the Primal Man, their suffering in the hands of the Assault launched by the Evil Spirit constitutes another point of similarity and their final fate in eschatology is likewise symmetrical, although, as we shall point out, there are certain divergencies between them, as required by the Zoroastrian system of thought. The views expressed in the Jewish scriptures and in Jewish tradition do not seem at first sight profoundly different-in the Jewish tradition too there is a conception of a grand unity of creation of all the constituents of the material world-but there are in fact telling differences between the two religious traditions. What these comparisons signify is a question we shall try to raise in the present discussion. Rather than summarize the cosmogonica! and eschatological passages of the Bundahisn and the Selections ofZädspram, which may be taken to be familiar, I should like to concentrate on some particular texts. One interesting passage in this respect is in the Pahlavi Riväyat accorri-panyingtheDädestän ïdenïg:' [14:1] It is revealed in a passage: Ohrmazd said to the cattle: 'Give yourselves to the material world, so that people may eat you'. The transcription and translation offered here are based on Alan Williams's edition (1990), with some modifications. For the text see Appendix I.
