A multistage sampling technique was used in selecting 300 respondents and primary data were collected using structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Land Market Index (LMI), Land Use Conflict Index (LUCI), Crop Commercialization Index (CCI) and Tobit regression model. Majority (95.3%) of the farmers were male, natives (81.3%), and married (97.3%) with an average household size of 9 persons. Also, 69.3% had formal education and an average of 24 years of farming experience. Majority (78.0%) of the farmers had their total landholding through non-market means (inheritance, borrowed and gift), 14.0% acquired their total landholding through market means (purchase, rent and lease), and the mean LMI was 0.16(±0.35), showing farmers had access to 16% of farmlands through market participation. Higher levels of savings can translate to higher levels of investment and rural development. To boost income, rural women diversify their livelihood activities. This study examined income diversification and savings pattern among rural women in Oyo State, Nigeria. Various income-generating activities, patterns of diversity and savings, determinants of income diversification and saving rate, and the effect of income diversification on rural women savings were assessed. Structured questionnaire was administered on a sample of 204 rural women who were selected using multi-stage sampling procedure. Descriptive statistics, Simpson diversity index and Tobit regression models were used in data analysis. Results show that majority (75%) of the rural women were arable crop farmers and 96% were diversified in income generation. The mean diversity index was 0.44, implying that on the average, rural women engaged in more than one incomegenerating activities. Saving rate is relatively low with mean saving rate of 28.08%. Tobit regression results show that membership of cooperative society (p<0.05), credit received (p<0.1) and road network (p<0.01) significantly affect income diversification. Also, income diversification (p<0.05), total income (p<0.01), household size (p<0.01) and age (p<0.01) significantly affect savings rate. Having more than one source of income increases saving rate among rural women. Therefore, Government and Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) should assist in making credit facilities available to rural women and ensure adequate monitoring to prevent diversion of funds, provide social amenities and organize training to improve production processes among rural women.

Rural savings in Nigeria has been low and long considered as inconsequential to national savings. The negative implications of negligible rural savings for rural and agricultural development thus require that the factors influencing rural household savings be investigated. The study therefore, surveyed 200 rural household heads in Akinyele local government area of Oyo state, Southwest Nigeria, using a multistage sampling technique. The data obtained was analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis. The results showed that mean age of household head was about 43 years, mean household size was about 6 persons while mean monthly income of household head was ₦16, 588.17 ($104). The most important reason for saving among the rural households was funding children’s’ education. Both formal and informal savings of the rural households were found to be generally low; however, mean monthl...

This study therefore assessed the current level of crop commercialisation, analyzed variation in the level of commercialisation among households and examined the determinants of crop commercialisation among smallholder farming households. Primary data were collected from 400 selected smallholder farm households in the study area with the aid of structured questionnaire using multistage sampling procedure. Analysis was done using descriptive statistics, Household Commercialization Index (HCI) and tobit regression model. The assessment of the current level of commercialisation among the smallholder farming households showed that average HCI was 0.83. Farmers with low, medium and high HCI were 6.44%, 9.65% and 83.91%. The tobit regression analysis further showed that, age, gender, level of education, household size, membership of an association, farm size, access to credit, market distance, farm and off farm income, were associated with increase in the extent of crop commercialisation. It was recommended that farmers should increase farm size while government should provide support such as credit facilities and input subsidy to enable smallholder farmers increase the level of agricultural production.

Multi-stage sampling procedure was used and primary data were collected using structured household questionnaire, key informant interview, and Focus Group Discussions. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics, the Multinomial Logit and the Tobit Models. There were more conflicts on plots (72.9%) during the period of years 2000 – 2010 than 1990 – 1999 (27.1%) showing an increase in the frequency of conflicts in recent years. The most common cause of conflict on plots among farmers was found to be related to the type of access that farmers had to plots (62.0% of the plots) as some access types were more secure than others. On the average, one year of conflict would lead to a decrease of (NGN125,914.00 ±2,000.00) per hectare in income of the farmers from food crops. Land use conflicts negatively affected food crop production within the study area. Also, most of the conflict...
