This paper presents a fuzzy logic methodology for predicting the most important parameters that i... more This paper presents a fuzzy logic methodology for predicting the most important parameters that influence the efficiency cycle of the gas turbine and estimates the transducer's condition "health" and its measuring accuracy during the fault. The fuzzy method is implemented here to monitor and predict the working conditions for different sensors and transducers in the gas turbine and to ensure that it is operated at a safe level to prevent equipment deterioration by the correct evaluation of its effective parameters, and save operational costs assuming that there is a single fault occurs at a given time. The fuzzy implementation consisted of two parts, the first one predicts the actual operating parameters based on gas turbine cycle performance calculations, and second part shows the sensor's condition estimates the transducers' accuracy in a percentage scale after any alarm to assure their competence. Fuzzy logic in such applications aids us to condense a large amount of data into smaller set of fuzzy variable rules, to minimize prolonged exposure to downtimes.

There is a strong need to improve the single slope solar still thermal performance and increase t... more There is a strong need to improve the single slope solar still thermal performance and increase the production rate of distilled water. Different types of absorbing materials were used to examine their effect on the yield of solar stills. These absorbing materials are of two types: coated and uncoated porous media (called metallic wiry sponges) and black volcanic rocks. Four identical solar stills were manufactured using locally available materials. The first three solar stills contain black coated and uncoated metallic wiry sponges made from steel quality AISI 430 type, and black rocks collected from Mafraq Area in northeastern Jordan. The fourth still is used as reference still which contains no absorbing materials (only black painted basin). The results showed that the uncoated sponge has the highest water collection during day time, followed by the black rocks and then coated metallic wiry sponges. On the other hand, the overall average gain in the collected distilled water taking into the consideration the overnight water collections were 28%, 43% and 60% for coated and uncoated metallic wiry sponges and black rocks respectively.

In order to improve the performance of the gas turbine power plant and to generate electricity at... more In order to improve the performance of the gas turbine power plant and to generate electricity at the best cost, a fuzzy logic controller model was used to show the effect of different parameters on the power generation output of gas turbines. The proposed methodology was applied to certain parameter values collected from Rehab power station in Jordan-as a case study-for validation purposes. Relative weights were used, i.e., very very low power generation ''extremely low power generation,'' very low power generation, low power generation, normal power generation, high power generation, and very high power generation. The study reveals that the major factors that affect yield are ambient temperature (T 1), compressor's exit temperature (T 2), turbine's inlet temperature (T 3), turbine exit temperature (T 4), pressure ratio (R p), mass of fuel (M f), relative humidity (H), turbine efficiency (g t), and compressor efficiency (g c). Based on the increase of productivity, the results show that different factors are found to affect the yield of a power generator. Therefore, using fuzzy logic controller model has lead the researchers to focus on the highest priority parameters that should be enhanced and developed to increase the power output productivity.

It is one of the major problems encountered in industry and it does cost the world billions of dollars every year. Substantial savings can be obtained in many types of plants through the use of corrosion-resistant materials of construction. Pitting, corrosion and stress corrosion cracking can lead to catastrophic unexpected failures to many engineering applications. Resistance to stress corrosion cracking and pitting can be greatly increased by a cold working process called shot peening. The present experimental work aimed to evaluate the effect of shot peening on retarding pitting, and enhancing the stress corrosion cracking resistance of 304 stainless steel, in a sodium chloride solution (NaCl) at 60 o C. The present study will be concerned on the uses of fuzzy sets methodology to perform evaluation between the most suitable solar technologies for power generation in Jordan, namely, solar ponds and photovoltaic (PV) technologies. The criterion of the evaluation were based on different parameters, i.e., power capacity, efficiency, availability, capacity factor, storage capability, cost, maturity, land usage and safety, they are planned as the technologies for the near foreseen term. Based on benefit to cost ratios, the results showed that photovoltaic technology found to be the better choice in terms of generating electricity, research and development and more effective programs of support and installation.

Jordan is a developing non-producing oil country; a major part of its needed energy is imported f... more Jordan is a developing non-producing oil country; a major part of its needed energy is imported from the neighboring countries in the forms of oil and gas, the cost of this imported energy creates a heavy financial burden on the national economy which reflects on the development plans and the standard living of the people. Jordan has good potential of geothermal energy at different places. Therefore, several applications are suggested to be utilized in the agricultural and industrial fields. In this study the binary thermodynamic cycle is suggested to utilize the geothermal source into the form of power plant for generating electricity for heating and cooling system of a health resort in the nearby region of the geothermal field. Jordan is of great needs for renewable energy systems applications since it depends totally in generation of its required energy on imported oil. This study is an experimental work of tracking system developed for enhancing the solar heating using solar cooker. An electronic sun tracking device was used for rotating the solar heater with the movement of the sun. A comparison between fixed and sun tracked cooker showed that the use of sun tracking increased the heating temperature by 36% due to the increase in radiation concentration and using internal mirror reflectors. The programming method used for tracking control works efficiently in all weather conditions regardless of the presence of clouds. The aim of this paper is to apply a mathematical model using a lumped parameter thermal method an... more The aim of this paper is to apply a mathematical model using a lumped parameter thermal method and to conduct experiment test to determine the temperature distribution inside the induction motor to evaluate the thermal stability of the induction motor and to check whether the insulation of the copper windings is sufficient at different operating conditions, and to find out the hottest element which has the main effect on the operation and performance of the motor. We found out from the thermal model analysis that the hottest element in the induction motor is the end winding and rotor bars, this is due to stator copper losses and rotor bars losses which depend on the stator current, the stator current can be increased by increasing the torque or by decreasing the stator frequency, which makes the temperature of each element to increase. Convectional solar stills coupled with either flat plate collector (FPC) or parabolic trough conc... more Convectional solar stills coupled with either flat plate collector (FPC) or parabolic trough concentrator (PTC) have been investigated in different condition sets. In this experimental study, double slope solar still (DSSS) is coupled with FPC or PTC and the test was extended further to the coupling of both collectors to find out the performance of these different setups under the meteorological condition of the city of Medina west of Arabia. The three devices are connected in series where circulated water is heated first by FPC and then by PTC before entering a heat exchanger in a basin of DSSS. It has been found that solar still productivity can be improved substantially by such coupling. The experimental result shows that the accumulated yield from the standalone still, coupled with PTC, still coupled with FPC, and still coupled with both were 2.85, 4.27, 6.41, and 7.63 L/m 2 /d, respectively. The increase of productivity using these different enhancers were 61%, 142%, and 170%, respectively. Also, the experimental investigation found that the water temperatures increased by about 9% for solar still integrated with PTC to about 27% for solar still integrated with the two collectors relative to standalone solar still under similar climate conditions.

Jordan is of great needs for renewable energy systems applications since it depends totally in generation of its required energy on imported oil. This study is an experimental work of tracking system developed for enhancing the solar heating using solar cooker. An electronic sun tracking device was used for rotating the solar heater with the movement of the sun. A comparison between fixed and sun tracked cooker showed that the use of sun tracking increased the heating temperature by 36% due to the increase in radiation concentration and using internal mirror reflectors. The programming method used for tracking control works efficiently in all weather conditions regardless of the presence of clouds. The aim of this paper is to apply a mathematical model using a lumped parameter thermal method an... more The aim of this paper is to apply a mathematical model using a lumped parameter thermal method and to conduct experiment test to determine the temperature distribution inside the induction motor to evaluate the thermal stability of the induction motor and to check whether the insulation of the copper windings is sufficient at different operating conditions, and to find out the hottest element which has the main effect on the operation and performance of the motor. We found out from the thermal model analysis that the hottest element in the induction motor is the end winding and rotor bars, this is due to stator copper losses and rotor bars losses which depend on the stator current, the stator current can be increased by increasing the torque or by decreasing the stator frequency, which makes the temperature of each element to increase. Convectional solar stills coupled with either flat plate collector (FPC) or parabolic trough conc... more Convectional solar stills coupled with either flat plate collector (FPC) or parabolic trough concentrator (PTC) have been investigated in different condition sets. In this experimental study, double slope solar still (DSSS) is coupled with FPC or PTC and the test was extended further to the coupling of both collectors to find out the performance of these different setups under the meteorological condition of the city of Medina west of Arabia. The three devices are connected in series where circulated water is heated first by FPC and then by PTC before entering a heat exchanger in a basin of DSSS. It has been found that solar still productivity can be improved substantially by such coupling. The experimental result shows that the accumulated yield from the standalone still, coupled with PTC, still coupled with FPC, and still coupled with both were 2.85, 4.27, 6.41, and 7.63 L/m 2 /d, respectively. The increase of productivity using these different enhancers were 61%, 142%, and 170%, respectively. Also, the experimental investigation found that the water temperatures increased by about 9% for solar still integrated with PTC to about 27% for solar still integrated with the two collectors relative to standalone solar still under similar climate conditions.
