تستعرض هذه الدراسة أهم معايير الميتاداتا المستخدمة بغرض تبادل البيانات والكشف عن موارد المعلومات ... more تستعرض هذه الدراسة أهم معايير الميتاداتا المستخدمة بغرض تبادل البيانات والكشف عن موارد المعلومات بشبكة الانترنت. ثم تلقى الضوء على مشكلة التشغيل البيني interoperability لهذه المعايير مع بعضها البعض من أجل تسهيل عملية تبادل البيانات بين نظم المعلومات المختلفة. وتتطرق الدراسة في هذا السياق إلى عملية إنشاء جداول الميتاداتا Metadata Crosswalks والتي يتم عن طريقها تحقيق عملية التشغيل البيني لمعايير ومخططات الميتاداتا المختلفة. كذلك توضح هذه الدراسة طرق تنفيذ جداول الميتاداتا و بيان أهم المشاكل التي تواجه عملية إنشاء هذه الجداول والتي تأتى في مقدمتها عدم وجود تطابق تام بين معايير ومخططات الميتاداتا المختلفة
This paper investigated the status of the electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) programme de... more This paper investigated the status of the electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) programme development and management at the University of Khartoum (UofK) in Sudan. Explored aspects such as deposit policy, workflow, the theses and dissertations retrospective digitization project progress, metadata and software platform used, dissemination and access mode employed, and copyright issues. The study adopted a qualitative approach involving the case study method. A semi-structured interview was used for the purpose of data collection. Relevant documents and reports pertaining to the ETD programme development at the University were obtained and analyzed, in addition to observation, and investigation of the ETD collection at the University's institutional repository. This study investigates the existing library and information services, facilities and support ava... more This study investigates the existing library and information services, facilities and support available for the visually-impaired and blind students at the University of Khartoum in Sudan.It also highlighted the specific difficulties faced by these students in satisfying their information needs. The study sample consisted of 20 subjects out of a total population of 45 visually-impaired and blind students, constituting 44.44 % of the study population. Literature review was also used to collect data about some aspects of the study topic, such as the different types of technologies available for enabling the visually-impaired and blind to benefit from library services. The study revealed that the services and facilities available at the University of Khartoum are inadequate. A number of recommendations that are expected to improve the situation are suggested, including the need of the visually impaired and blind students for more training on using the available assistive technologies.

It discusses various aspects of this emerging mode of scholarly publishing, including the definition of Open Access and its different types and models in addition to its growth and impact. The chapter also highlights the implications of open access publishing on copyright issues and how creative commons licenses are used to deal with this issue. The main focus of the chapter is to outline and discuss the different advantages and benefits of open access publishing, refuting a number of myths and misconceptions about OA publishing, and to highlight how authors and researchers can benefit from publishing their intellectual works in an open access channel. The chapter adopts the literature review as a methodology and a tool of data collection.

Abstract This study investigates the English language needs of the Library and Information Scienc... more Abstract This study investigates the English language needs of the Library and Information Science (LIS) students in Sudan. Two questionnaires were employed for this purpose; one for the students and the other for the teachers. The students sample consists of 200 subjects, whereas the teachers’ sample consists of 20 subjects. The needs survey reveals that LIS students need to master both reading and writing language skills as a priority, in addition to their need to comprehend spoken English in the field of Library and Information work. In the light of these findings, the study has come up with specifications of requirements of a syllabus and materials for English for Specific Purposes (ESP) course that meets the needs of LIS students. The syllabus is a combination of two types of syllabus; a content-based syllabus and a skills-based syllabus.

This paper investigates the current state of online education in Sudan. The study covers educatio... more This paper investigates the current state of online education in Sudan. The study covers educational programmes provided by higher and general education institutions via the Internet. The methodology employed is the survey method. Data collection tools include a survey of websites of educational institutions, document analysis, and an unstructured interview. The study reveals that online education in Sudan is still at a very preliminary stage and it is mostly in the form of ongoing or planned projects which are yet to be implemented. The study also highlights the main obstacles that affect the development and implementation of online education in the country.
The continuous developments in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) have had a far reac... more The continuous developments in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) have had a far reaching impact on library and information institutions and services worldwide. Academic libraries, particularly in the underdeveloped world are lagging behind for a number of reasons; the important one being the lack of necessary skills to deal with ICT by academic library staff. This paper investigates the current situation of ICT at the University of Khartoum Library System (UKLIS), and identifies the staff training programmes carried out there in order to prepare the staff and equip them with the necessary skills to cope with advances in ICT. The methods employed for data collection include interviews and document analysis. The findings reveal that although the ICT infrastructure at the University of Khartoum, the parent institution, is available, yet the ICT situation at the UKLIS is deplorable, and that the training programmes available are inadequate for this purpose. The paper explored the current status of the University of Khartoum institutional repository (Kha... more The paper explored the current status of the University of Khartoum institutional repository (Khartoumspace) and attempted to answer questions pertaining to the contents of the repository and how they are organized, its staff and workflow, and how data is managed within the repository in addition to deposit and access policies adopted, and copyright and support issues. The study adopted a descriptive approach and used the case study method. Data collection tools included a semi-structured interview, document analysis, and observation. The study found that graduate theses and dissertations constitute the largest collection in the repository and that there is a high degree of institutional support for the repository. The paper also revealed that a mandatory deposit policy has been introduced by the University of Khartoum administration to enrich the repository with staff publications, but there is a need for more advocacy and awareness raising programmes targeting the University acade...

The chapter presents an overview of the development and practice of Open Government Data at the international level. It also discusses the advantages and benefits of Open Government Data. The scope and characteristics of OGD, in addition to the perceived risks, obstacles and challenges are also presented. The chapter closes with a look at the future of open data and open government data in particular. The author adopted literature review as a method and a tool of data collection for the purpose of writing this chapter.

Like on-campus students, distance learners should have access to appropriate library and information support services. They also have specific needs for library and information support services as a result of their distance from their university libraries.
