Research paper thumbnail of Control system and fault detection algorithm for a restored teeth fatigue assay machine

In this work, the control system and fault detection algorithm applied on a real fatigue assay ma... more In this work, the control system and fault detection algorithm applied on a real fatigue assay machine is addressed. The objective of the machine is to apply periodical forces to restored teeth and to detect the teeth collapse calculating the number of cycles until the fault occurs. There is a Scottish yoke mechanism that converts the torque of a brushless motor on linear forces. This motor is driven by a power drive that receives the torque reference from a computer operating on real-time, and where the fault detection algorithm is applied. There is also a user computer where the parameters of the assay are introduced and where the results are shown. In this work the control system that has been implemented is shown in detail and the developed fault algorithm with adaptive threshold for the system with several sampling times is addressed.

The best results have been obtained by suitably choosing the training pattern pairs, the thresholds, and the activation functions of the network's neurones, by means of certain proposed methods described in the paper. In order to put forward the advantages of these proposed methods, the classifier has been applied on an especially popular hand-written character set as the well-known NIST#19 character database, and with one of the UCI's data bases. In all cases, the method led to a marked improvement in the performance achievable by a BAM, with a 0% error rate.

Cross sections, in both the electron and muon decay modes of the W -boson, are presented as a function of jet multiplicity and of the transverse momentum of the leading and next-to-leading jets in the event. Measurements are also presented of the ratio of cross sections σ(W+⩾n)/σ(W+⩾n−1)σ(W+⩾n)/σ(W+⩾n−1) for inclusive jet multiplicities n=1–4n=1–4. The results, based on an integrated luminosity of 1.3 pb−11.3 pb−1, have been corrected for all known detector effects and are quoted in a limited and well-defined range of jet and lepton kinematics. The measured cross sections are compared to particle-level predictions based on perturbative QCD. Next-to-leading order calculations, studied here for n⩽2n⩽2, are found in good agreement with the data. Leading-order multiparton event generators, normalized to the NNLO total cross section, describe the data well for all measured jet multiplicities.

The system that is constructed includes a geometrical pre-processing stage that eliminates distortions, thereby improving the results. As a final characteristic, the functioning of the system presents a high level of immunity to noise or deformations. The system was evaluated using the two popular databases NIST#19 and UCI. There was found to be no misclassification in any case, whether under conditions of heavy contamination from noise or distortion of the image to be classified.

The surgical treatment is mainly the aggressive surgery of the primary tumor and metastases. We present a case of a patient with malignant mandibular ameloblastoma with metastases in liver and lung, which was subjected to a subtotal mandibulectomy, local radiotherapy and lung and liver metastasectomy in a second time, with late recurrence of the lesion.

The luminosity is independently determined using several detectors and multiple algorithms, each having different acceptances, systematic uncertainties and sensitivity to background. The ratios of the luminosities obtained from these methods are monitored as a function of time and of μ, the average number of inelastic interactions per bunch crossing. Residual time-and μ-dependence between the methods is less than 2% for 0 < μ < 2.5. Absolute luminosity calibrations, performed using beam separation scans, have a common systematic uncertainty of ±11%, dominated by the measurement of the LHC beam currents. After calibration, the luminosities obtained from the different methods differ by at most ±2%. The visible cross sections measured using the beam scans are compared to predictions obtained with the PYTHIA and PHOJET event generators and the ATLAS detector simulation.

These deleterious impacts may also interact with each other at diVerent spatial scales, leading to nonlinear eVects of fruit abundance on seed dispersal. In this study we assessed whether the degradation and fragmentation of southern Chilean forests had the potential to restrict seed dispersal the lingue (Persea lingue) tree, a Xeshy-fruited tree species. Of Wve frugivore bird species, the austral thrush (Turdus falcklandii) and the Wre-eyed diucon (Xolmis pyrope) were the only legitimate seed dispersers as well as being the most abundant species visiting lingue trees. The results showed little or no direct eVect of habitat fragmentation on seed dispersal estimates, possibly because the assemblage of frugivore birds was comprised habitatgeneralist species. Instead, the number of fruits removed per focal tree exhibited an enhanced response to crop size, but only in the more connected fragments. In the fruitricher fragment networks, there was an increased fragmentsize eVect on the proportion of fruits removed in comparison to fruit-poor networks in which the fragment size eVect was spurious. We suggest that such nonlinear eVects are widespread in fragmented forest regions, resulting from the link between the spatial scales over which frugivores sample resources and the spatial heterogeneity in fruiting resources caused by habitat fragmentation and degradation.
