E l presente artículo tiene por objeto efectuar una aproximación a los principales aspectos de la... more E l presente artículo tiene por objeto efectuar una aproximación a los principales aspectos de la ciencia. Según ello, se abordan tópicos concernientes a los inicios de este quehacer humano, distinguiendo entre los perfiles que adopta en la antigua Grecia y los asumidos a partir del siglo XVII. Del mismo modo, el concepto de ciencia, sus funciones y clasificación, la concepción de aquélla como investigación, por una parte, y, por otra, como conocimiento, la naturaleza del método científico y el examen de algunas importantes nociones que forman parte del lenguaje científico, son temas también abordados aquí.

We study the ascending motion of a disk rolling on an incline when its center of mass lies outsid... more We study the ascending motion of a disk rolling on an incline when its center of mass lies outside the disk axis. The problem is suitable as laboratory project for a first course in mechanics at the undergraduate level and goes beyond typical textbook problems about bi-dimensional rigid body motions. We develop a theoretical model for the disk motion based on mechanical energy conservation and compare its predictions with experimental data obtained by digital video recording. Using readily available resources, a very satisfactory agreement is obtained between the model and the experimental observations. These results complement previous ones that have been reported in the literature for similar systems.
