There is no effective treatment for rabies; therefore, regular vaccination of at-risk animals is the best control

Nelore cattle were randomly assigned to one of three groups, which were vaccinated with one dose of rabies vaccine (group GVSR, N = 15), two doses of rabies vaccine (group GVR, N = 15) or were not vaccinated (group Gc, N = 15). A commercial liquid inactivated rabies vaccine was used. The stressors imposed on the cattle were vaccination, corral handling and the presence of people. Blood samples were collected on days 0, 30 and 60 post-vaccination. Serum cortisol concentrations were determined using a solid-phase radioimmunoassay, and rabies antibody titers were determined using a serum neutralization test with BHK 21 cells (RFFIT). Both serum cortisol concentrations and antibody titers increased after the second (booster) vaccination (P < 0.05). In all the groups, the serum cortisol concentrations increased after the cattle were handled in the corral (P < 0.05). No correlation was observed between the serum cortisol concentrations and the antibody titers with any treatment or on any observation day. In conclusion, booster vaccination is indispensable for primovaccinated cattle in achieving high and protective levels of rabies antibodies. Although booster vaccination and frequent cattle handling in corrals are stressors, the response is not strong enough to cause immunosuppression in cattle.

We used 40 animals, Nelore bulls (Bos indicus) aged approximately 12 months, randomly divided into 2 groups (20 animals / group): control group (CG) received only mineral mixture and probiotic group (GP) with added probiotic. Calves were weighed on days 0 and 30 from 30 to 90 days and 00 to 90 days. The results showed a significant increase in weight gain in animals only GP in the first 30 days

They have been shown to have beneficial effects when used as growth promoters (Ferreira and others 2009) and as immunostimulants (Arenas and others 2009) in calves. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of a probiotic preparation added to the mineral mix given to young cattle with regard to liveweight gain and serum cortisol concentration. The study used 40 male Nelore cattle, approximately 18 months old, fed on Brachiaria brizantha under a rotational grazing system and divided into two experimental groups of 20 animals. Animals in the experimental group (probiotic group) were supplemented with 4.0 g/animal/day of probiotic (Proenzime; EMBRAUPEC), added to the mineral mix given to the cattle. The animals in the control group were supplemented with mineral mix without the addition of the probiotic. During the first 30 days, all cattle remained in their pasture …

Sixty Nelore male calves (10 to 12 months old) received daily and individual dietary supplementation with 0, 3.6, 5.4 and 6.4 mg Se (groups Gc, G 3.6 , G 5.4 and G 6.4 , respectively). The animals were vaccinated against rabies (day 0) and subjected to handling stress in the corral for 120 days. Blood sampling procedures were performed on days 0, 15, 30, 60, 90 and 120. Cortisol levels increased until day 90, but had dropped significantly by day 120 (P < 0.01). Rabies antibody titers on days 30 and 90 were similar among Sesupplemented groups; in the control group, rabies antibodies decreased significantly from day 30 to 60, and 90 to 120. Serum cortisol levels and antibody titers were not correlated in most of the groups or blood sampling days. A positive correlation among these variables was found only in G 6.4 on days 60 (R = 0.513; P = 0.05) and 120 (R = 0.644; P = 0.009). In conclusion, repeated handling in the corral stresses cattle, but without compromising rabies humoral immune response.
