This study presents a redesigning approach of a robot gripper claw based on composite 3D printing method. The work is focused on the structure and layout of the continuous reinforcement fibers able to make a weight reduction and to increase the stiffness. The pattern strategy of fibers could be mixed to improve the mechanical response of the redesigned component at reasonable manufacturing costs. Finite element analyses (FEA) were developed to evaluate the proposed designs which used advanced materials as sandwich composites 3D printed. Compared to the conventional design of a nylon part, the reinforced models show an increment of stiffness. The redesigned models had a von Mises tension up to 60 MPa and a safety factor around 3.5. Based on these preliminary findings, future study could be developed to optimize and to customize the design of robot gripper claws using composite 3D printing technology.

In the present study, a zygomatic bone defect was reconstructed with a custom made implant fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) processing from titanium particles. 2 years follow-up revealed diplopia (double vision) resolution, as well as esthetic and functional stabile reconstruction. Technical queries regarding the fabrication process and medical reconstruction are discussed.

The work aims to characterize the structure and to evaluate in vitro the effect of different surface treatments on the bioactivity of medical grade Ti6Al7Nb alloy implants manufactured by selective laser melting. In order to improve the bioactivity of these samples, they were subjected to heat treatment, chemical treatment, and impregnation with bioactive materials. To evaluate the apatite forming ability, the samples were immersed in simulated body fluid solution) and characterized before and after immersion by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The composition and the texture of the surfaces after the applied treatments have a selective effect on apatite layer development on the surface of samples.

There are some requirements related to the mechanical properties of the material, surface roughness, the accuracy of the manufactured part and the process control, in order to turn SLM process into a production technique. The presented work investigates if the SLM process, according to the state of the art, fulfills these manufacturing requirements, trying to show meantime few opportunities / applications of the metallic parts manufactured by means of SLM. The results of the developed research underline and recommend that compensation factors must be used, in order to get a good correlation between the SLM manufactured prototype and the CAD model dimensions. By doing so, the time needed for the Rapid Product Development process using the SLM manufacturing method will be significantly decreased. Finite element analysis (FEA) and Design Expert software were jointly used in order to determine the optimum process parameters and the compensation factors required to improve the accuracy of the SLM process. An interesting case study undertaken at the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca (TUCN) in cooperation with an industrial company from Romania, using our MTT Realizer II SLM 250 equipment is also presented in the paper . Key words: Additive Layer Manufacturing (ALM), Rapid Manufacturing (RM), Rapid Prototyping (RP), Selective Laser Melting (SLM), Finite Element Analysis (FEA)

It is created by injecting wax into a mould cavity, where the pattern is an exact copy of the cast part with strict dimensional tolerances. It also has to allow for shrinkage of the material to be cast. This pattern is then dipped into a silica slurry bath. For a good surface finish, finer slurry and zircon sand is often used. The shell is then heated to dewax the mould, followed by firing and preheating before the molten metal is poured into the dewaxed cavity. A good understanding of the wax injection process is essential for good quality parts to be created. Key words : investment casting, modeling methodology, cost reduction, concurrent engineering
