Nowadays, when the economic activity of mothers has become quite a common phenomenon, both across countries and social groups, the question of the consequences has returned. The increased interest in this subject is mainly due to a lively discussion on the question: What does it mean to be a good mother? The term “intensive mothering” was formulated by Sharon Hays (1996), and it is regularly addressed in media, and public and academic debate. Mothers’ employment has become a bone of contention in the so-called mommy wars. Another reason to intensify discussions on the impact of mothers’ employment on children’s development is the implantation of social investment perspective in the debate on the direction of changes of the modern welfare state. Nowadays childhood is regarded as a per...

Homo economicus does not compare his income with the income of others. However, number of recent studies suggest the existence of a negative impact of income inequality on the level of subjective well-being. Using the data from Social Diagnosis 2011 the paper aims at measuring the relation of income inequalities in Polish subregions and the level subjective well-being of their inhabitants. The results of the study are not conclusive and do not provide strong arguments either for rejecting or accepting the hypothesis of the negative effect of social inequalities in subregions on subjective well-being.

The paper presents an analysis of the conventional discourse based on Internet forums devoted to this programme. The analysis of 47 forums and over 3,000 posts shared between November 2015 and June 2019 allowed the author to distinguish fourteen dominant conventional discourses which were classified into three groups labelled as follows: (1) discourses of the state’s/individuals’ responsibility (2) discourses concerning policy making (3) discourses of (in)efficiency and (in)effectiveness. The research also indicates the leading role of the social perception of parents-beneficiaries in the debate on the “Family 500+” programme. The key to gaining social support, and, more broadly, for the legitimation of the welfare state in Poland, seems to care for a positive image of parents eligible for the b...
