A facility for measurements of neutron-induced double-di!erential light-ion production cross-sect... more A facility for measurements of neutron-induced double-di!erential light-ion production cross-sections, for application within, e.g., fast neutron cancer therapy, is described. The central detection elements are three-detector telescopes consisting of two silicon detectors and a CsI crystal. Use of E} E}E techniques allows good particle identi"cation for p, d, t, He and alpha particles over an energy range from a few MeV up to 100 MeV. Active plastic scintillator collimators are used to de"ne the telescope solid angle. Measurements can be performed using up to eight telescopes at 203 intervals simultaneously, thus covering a wide angular range. The performance of the equipment is illustrated using experimental data taken with a carbon target at E "95 MeV. Distortions of the measured charged-particle spectra due to energy and particle losses in the target are corrected using a newly developed computer code. Results from such correction calculations are presented.

Together with an earlier data set at the same energy, covering the angles thetac.m.=74° 180°, a new data set has been formed in the angular range thetac.m.=20° 180°. This extended data set has been normalized to the experimental total np cross section, resulting in a renormalization of the earlier data of 0.7%, which is well within the reported normalization uncertainty for that experiment. A novel normalization technique has been investigated. The results on forward np scattering are in reasonable agreement with theory models and partial wave analyses and have been compared with data from the literature.

The previously published data on ²°Pb have been extended, as a new method has been developed to obtain more information from data, namely to increase the number of angular bins at the most forward angles. Experimental techniques are presented as well as procedures for data taking and data reduction. Deduced energy-differential, angledifferential and production cross sections are reported. Experimental cross sections are compared with theoretical reaction model calculations and experimental data in the literature. The measured particle data show marked discrepancies from the results of the model calculations in spectral shape and magnitude. The measured production cross sections for protons, deuterons, tritons, 3 He, and α particles support the trends suggested by data at lower energies.

ABSTRACT. The degradation and failure of brittle or quasi-brittle geomaterials are analyzed in this Lecture. The main emphasis is put on the discrimination between discrete and continuum approaches to describe damage and fracture. The materials studied herein are cement, highperformance concrete and rocks. MOTS-CLÉS : Rupture fragile, comportement quasi-fragile, approche probabiliste, mécanique de l'endommagement, ciment, béton, roche.
