The ontology information is represented on a 3D view-port enriched by visual cues. A preliminary application based on the presented principles is described, and results show that the approach is feasible and can actually lead to a more effective modeling process and to an easy detection of "conceptual inconsistencies". The opinions of domain experts are also quite positive and seem to indicate that the approach is promising and can be extended for creating "user friendly" ontology editors for people with low ICT skills.

The idea of "anchor" as information unit is here introduced to view resources from different perspectives and to access existing resources and metadata archives. Moreover, the platform uses an ontology as a conceptual representation of a well-defined domain in order to semantically classify and retrieve anchors (and the related resources). Specifically, the architecture of the proposed platform aims at being as modular and easily extensible as possible, in order to permit the inclusion of state-of-the-art techniques for the classification and retrieval of multimedia resources. Eventually, the adoption of Web Services as interface technology facilitates the exposition of the semantic functionalities and of content management to web application designers and users without any additional overload on the content creation and maintenance workflow.

In the latest years, various alternatives to the classical input devices like keyboard and mouse and novel interaction paradigms have been proposed. Particularly, multimodal interactions have been proposed to overcome the limit of each input channel take alone. In this paper we propose a multimodal system based on the integration of speechand gaze-based inputs for interaction with a real desktop environment. A real-time grammar is generated to limit the vocal vocabulary basing on the fixated area. A disambiguation method is used for inherently ambiguous vocal commands, and the performed tests show its efficiency.

Such a gateway also provides the possibility to automate device cooperation through an embedded rule-based engine, which can be dynamically and automatically updated to accommodate necessities and anticipate users' actions. Some practical applications will show the effectiveness of the system.
