Research paper thumbnail of Physical activity and quality of life in older adults: Influence of health status and self-efficacy

Measures of health status and global well-being represent common methods of assessing QOL outcomes, yet little has been done to determine the nature of the relationship of these outcomes with physical activity. We examined the roles played by physical activity, health status, and self-efficacy in global QOL (satisfaction with life) in a sample of older Black and White women. Participants (N = 249, M age = 68.12 years) completed multiple indicators of physical activity, self-efficacy, health status, and QOL at baseline of a 24-month prospective trial. Structural equation modeling examined the fit of 3 models of the physical activity and QOL relationship. Analyses indicated that relationships between physical activity and QOL, self-efficacy and QOL were all indirect. Specifically, physical activity influenced self-efficacy and QOL through physical and mental health status, which in turn influenced global QOL. Our findings support a social cognitive model of physical activity's relationship with QOL. Subsequent tests of hypothesized relationships across time are recommended.

Research paper thumbnail of Remating behavior in Anastrepha fraterculus (Diptera: Tephritidae) females is affected by male juvenile hormone analog treatment but not by male sterilization

This technique requires sterilization, a procedure that affects, along with other factors, the ability of males to modulate female sexual receptivity after copulation. Numerous pre-release treatments have been proposed to counteract the detrimental effects of irradiation, rearing and handling and increase SIT effectiveness. These include treating newly emerged males with a juvenile hormone mimic (methoprene) or supplying protein to the male's diet to accelerate sexual maturation prior to release. Here, we examine how male irradiation, methoprene treatment and protein intake affect remating behavior and the amount of sperm stored in inseminated females. In field cage experiments, we found that irradiated laboratory males were equally able to modulate female remating behavior as fertile wild males. However, females mated with 6-da...

This satisfaction maintain relations to the coherence, fairness, fun, support, lack of conflicts, affective proximity, confidence, cohesion, adaptation, allocation and acceptance of roles and tasks, open communication and the acceptance in general of the own family. The use of developed psychological tests constructed in other countries is a frequent practice in the world. The validation and standardization of the test imply to establish measurement rules and scales of qualification for a determined population, when it is different from the original population in which it was created or where the instrument is used habitually. The objective of this study was to collect the normative data of the Family Satisfaction by Adjectives Scale (FSAS) in children and adolescents of Mexico City. Material and methods A cross-sectional study was performed in 476 men and women; 8 to 15 years 11 months of age. The survey family satisfaction by adjectives scale (FSAS) by Barraca and López-Yarto was applied. The data were analyzed with the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS v.17). Results The sample was conformed by 226 men (47.5%) and 250 women (52.5%). Of these, 237 were children (8 to 11 years and 11 months of age) and 239 were adolescents (12 to 15 years and 11 months of age). It was found that Family Satisfaction by Adjectives Scale (FSAS) has very good reliability (=.89), construct (50% total variance), content and discriminative validity among children and adolescents (p.000).
