Yet, research is inconclusive regarding the influence of adolescent affect on parenting behavior. This study examined the bidirectionality between five parenting behaviors and adolescent depressive symptoms—conceptualized by the tripartite model as low positive affect and high negative affect—while investigating gender differences. Adolescents ( N = 193) from a Southern United States high school reported their parent’s parenting behavior and their affect twice over a year. Linear regression results revealed relations between parenting behaviors and adolescent affect in both directions. However, when examining the relation between specific parenting behaviors (e.g., involvement) and adolescent affect (e.g., negative affect), results showed unidirectional effects only. Furthermore, significant gender differences emerged. These findings underline the importance of considering the relation between parenting behavior and adolescent affect as bidirectional and with differential associations depending on the parenting behavior and adolescent affect and gender.

With this prevalence, cancer is one of the most common health issues requiring informal caregiving (Aoun, 2004). In addition, cancer can require years of caregiving, and, in many cases, caregiving can become equivalent to a full-time job (

However, many of the field's measures are limited by the use of predominately Christian samples for scale construction. The utility of Poloma and Pendleton's (1989) Prayer Types Scale, proposing a 4-factor prayer typology, has not been validated in non-Christian samples. This cross-sectional, online study sought to determine whether the Prayer Types Scale's 4-factor structure and associations to mental health variables would be upheld across Christians (n ϭ 274), Jews (n ϭ 156), and Muslims (n ϭ 140). Multigroup analysis in AMOS was used to determine whether the factor structure of the Prayer Types Scale was equivalent across groups; results demonstrated that there was partial nonequivalence across groups. Revised prayer subscales were calculated for each religious group independently to account for this nonequivalence. The subscales had adequate internal consistencies across the subsamples, with the exception of Ritual prayer in the Muslim subsample. Finally, correlations were calculated to determine whether all subsamples had similar associations between prayer types and mental health variables. Results indicated differences among these associations for the 3 groups. The overall generalizability of the measure, as well as the implications and limitations, are discussed.

These cognitive errors are the reason why depressed individuals systematically misinterpret the significance of events in a negative way. They are usually assessed with the application of the Cognitive Error Questionnaire (CEQ). This study examines the psychometric properties and factor structure of the German version of the CEQ in a sample of 796 volunteers at a German university. Results confirmed that the German CEQ has satisfactory to very good psychometric properties, like the American original. Confirmatory factor analyses demonstrated that a hierarchical 4-factor model with 4 subscales and 1 second order factor fits the data best. Therefore, besides using the German CEQ in studies with German-speaking samples, the similarities in psychometric properties of the American and German CEQ allow for cross-cultural studies.

Accordingly, these students may have particular difficulty forming positive relationships with teachers, yet student-teacher relationship quality in RTC schools has not been empirically studied. This study examines links between RTC school students' assessments of their relationships with teachers and their perceptions of self and others. Participants were 113 students in 2 RTC schools from 5th to 12th grade. Results indicate that male and female RTC students' positive perceptions (of self and others) are linked to positive assessments of their relationships with teachers. However, for girls in RTC schools, negative perceptions of self are linked to less positive assessments of the teacherstudent relationship. Implications are discussed.

The aim of this article is to clarify the existence of significant individual response differences in psychophysiological responses (e.g., heart rate, skin conductance responses (SCR), corrugator, cortisol), subjective ratings (e.g., valence, arousal), and avoidance behavior in 46 spider phobic and 44 non-phobic women when exposed to 20 phobic and 20 neutral pictures. Previous studies that did not attend to individual response differences showed that, during phobic stimulation, phobic individuals have increased psychophysiological responses (heart rate, SCR, and corrugator responses), more negative valence rating, and more subjective arousal than non-phobic individuals. These results were confirmed by our data. With regard to individual response uniqueness, 1/3-2/3 of spider-phobic women with low responsiveness in heart rate, cortisol, and avoidance behavior were indistinguishable from non-phobic women during phobic stimulation. With SCR, corrugator EMG, and subjective ratings, no individual response uniqueness was found. Based on the findings, exposure therapy might be improved by tailoring interventions to individuals with a therapeutic focus on those psychophysiological measures that show the highest individual responsivity.

A rise in mental health concerns in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic has been observed. Examining patterns in how people experienced health, economic, and social concerns in the context of the pandemic and documenting relationships between these groups with mental health outcomes will fill a gap in the literature. Describing these associations is also in line with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Developmental Goals of promoting health and reducing inequalities. In the current study, we conducted a latent class analysis with items assessing health, economic, and social concerns in a sample of 1,394 people. Associations between groups with depressive and anxiety symptoms were also examined. A six-class model showed good fit, and groups were named: high overall concern (32.98%), health concerns without health care (14.78%), health and economic concerns (17.46%), economic concerns (4.57%), health concerns with health care (19.77%), and low overall concern (10.43%). Group membership was associated with mental health, with four groups reporting anxiety symptoms above a clinical cutoff. The intersection of concerns observed in these groups may serve as a barrier to mental health treatment during or following the pandemic. Consistent with the UN Sustainable Developmental Goals, ensuring equitable access to mental health care in the United States following the pandemic must include addressing the unique intersections of social determinants of health that people face.

In this study, we focused on Beck’s cognitive triad, namely its three-fold structure, comprising views of the self, world, and future. Despite its crucial role in the cognitive theory of depression, the relationship between the cognitive triad and depressive symptoms in adolescence is still unclear. In our study, we adopted a meta-analytic commonality analysis approach, in order to clarify whether the three components of the triad overlap in accounting for depressive symptoms, or they show distinct profiles of association. By relying on six independent samples of early adolescents (age range = 13–14: n = 174, 66% female, n = 347, 41% female), mid adolescents (age range = 15–17: n = 304, 61% female; n = 92, 34% female), and late adolescents (age range = 18–21: n = 217, 84% female, n = 101, 56% female), we showed that the vi...
