A course in project management is fundamental to nearly all engineering management education programs. On-line education and e-learning is growing rapidly and understanding the issues unique to teaching project management in this environment will serve the emerging generation of engineers entering the field as well as those already engaged in the profession.

To most people, the term 'emerging markets' connotes economically underdeveloped economies that have not achieved a level of maturity normally associated with leading economies around the globe. Indeed, these economies represent great business opportunities because of their strong growth potential combined with a confluence of business critical factors such as low labor costs, weak competition, low government regulation and many others. For the discerning entrepreneur, the term 'emerging markets' also spans new opportunities in developed economies, which are often driven by technological advancement, changes in government regulations or swings in societalmoods. The forces of change can spark new industries or breathe new life into old ones. Some examples of these include the emerging smart grid, additive manufacturing (3-D printing), and the many new uses being discovered for rare earth elements with advancements in nano-technology.

It is clear that practicing managers face a different set of challenges than theoreticians. Managers continually confront the day to day challenges of meeting business targets and navigating the ensuing practical trade-offs. Theoreticians typically have the luxury of additional time and space to analyze a broader spectrum of issues, yet face the challenge of identifying the common underlying problems and then developing solutions that will stand the rigorous test of time. The new format of EMR blends together these two perspectives by aggregating a set of articles that complements the issues illuminated in the Technology Manager's Notebook.

In this issue of EMR, we explore the various strategies and tactics that businesses are deploying to gain a competitive advantage by leveraging social media networks to enhance their organizational interfaces. From crowdsourcing ideas and solutions to managing threats from competitors and recruiting technical talent, the utility of social media in the workplace is undeniable. But the path to a successful social media campaign is by no means a clear and sunny trail. Rather, it is riddled with formidable obstacles embedded in a tortuous landscape that can leave the unsuspecting or unprepared technology manager scrambling in retreat. What is your social media strategy? What are the major threats that you perceive and opportunities you seek to exploit? Are you a collaborative leader? These are the key questions to which we seek answers in this issue of EMR.

We posit that innovation-across the value chain, in strategy, and in business models-is the central element of any truly sustainable business. Linking the theoretical models of Market Orientation (MO) and the Resource Based View of the Firm (RBV), purposive search directed through a Knowledge Based View (KBV) offers a schematic outline for how and where applications of big data analytics can facilitate innovation for long-term sustainability of the firm-for survival, profit, and dynamic fit with the changing environment.
