This, together with an evaluation of healthy schools activities within eight pilot healthy schools partnerships throughout England funded by the Department of Health and the Department for Education and Employment, formed part of the research underpinning the creation of a National Healthy Schools Standard. Principles for effective working are identified, as well as difficulties likely to be encountered in creating and promoting such a standard.

Poverty remains entrenched in the UK, despite considerable research efforts to understand its causes and possible solutions. The Joseph Rowntree Foundation, with the Centre for Science and Policy at the University of Cambridge, ran a democratic, transparent, consensual exercise involving 45 participants from government, non-governmental organisations, academia and research to identify 100 important research questions that, if answered, would help to reduce or prevent poverty. The list includes questions across a number of important themes, including attitudes, education, family, employment, heath, wellbeing, inclusion, markets, housing, taxes, inequality and power.

A notoriously sensitive subject, and one that is presumed to be largely hidden, researchers have long struggled with the question of how to measure its impact and how to explore its incidence. Arising from the ESRC's Violence Research Programme, Researching Violence is a practical guide both to theses problems and to the obstacles encountered when negotiating this uneasy terrain. Comprising the reflections of researchers who have worked on diverse projects - from violence in the home to racial violence and homicide - this book demonstrates the ingenuity and at times courageous actions of researchers having to think on their feet. It also investigates the ethical and emotional issues arising from working with the victims and perpetrators of violence. This book will be indispensable for students and academics doing research projects on violence.

It is suggested that the distinction between scheme-dependence and scheme-independence in (pragmatist) transcendental metaphysics is itself contextual, not absolute, and that this contextuality is a "transcendental fact" about our practice-embedded world-constitutive activities.

Discrimination stigmatization and denial (DSD) are the expected outcomes of such values affecting life in families communities workplaces schools and health care settings. Because of HIV/AIDS-related DSD appropriate policies and models of good practice remain undeveloped. People living with HIV and AIDS (PLHA) continue to be burdened by poor care and inadequate services while those with the power to help do little to make the situation better. Although there have been a small number of recent Indian studies on HIV/AIDS-related DSD it remains the case that relatively little is known about the causes of these negative responses or how they can best be addressed. For this reason the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS provided financial and technical support to a research team from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences Mumbai in order that insights might be gained into the experiences of Indians living with HIV/AIDS the negative social responses they encounter and the roots of HIV/AIDS-related DSD. This report describes that research conducted in Mumbai and Bangalore India. (excerpt)

It draws on multidisciplinary empirical research—on Violence, Sexuality and Space—conducted in a place that was simultaneously represented in one of the most controversial programmes ever to be screened on British television— Queer as Folk. As the television programme intervened in the responses from the interviews and focus groups, we begin, through an exploration of spatial referents and characterisation, to explore the `authentic' underpinning for the queer imaginary. We examine the sexual politics of place and space as a politics of verisimilitude, affectivity and political claims-making.

The overall aims of this study were to explore factors contributing to early pregnancy and parenthood among young people in and leaving local authority care; to determine the kinds of support available to these young people; and to identify what enables or prevents the delivery of the support they need. Via in-depth interviews, and in four contrasting geographical areas, data were collected from young people and service providers across England. This paper analyses data of relevance to the experience of young fathers who have been looked after—to consider how the needs of these young men might be better addressed through policy and practice. In-depth interviews conducted with young fathers and service providers highlighted three key aspects of their experience that must be addressed if future needs are to be better provided for. These are: social exclusion, trust and more flexible forms of service provision. The implications of these issues for future policy and programme development are discussed.
