The technique of embalming is an important tool in teaching and research in anatomy enabling the preservation of cadaveric material in good conditions (lessening any significant structural changes and maintaining the natural appearance). This article presents the results of embalmed cadavers in the course of arterial perfusion, through the use of a perfusion machine, particularly designed to this objective, and which allows the control of the embalming fluid injection process. The influence of this technique and the optimization of its parameters on the final quality of embalming were evaluated by sequential histological analysis of the cadaveric tissues using an original method of classification of samples collected from 17 deceased corpses of the Corpses Donation Office of the Department of Anatomy of Faculdade de Ciências Médicas from Universidade Nova de Lisboa, subject to...

However, during its long lifetime inevitable changes to the instruments and measurement procedures and even the relocation of the observatory have taken place. In our previous work (Morozova et al., 2014) we performed homogenization-elimination of the artificial changes-of the measured declination series (D) for the period from 1866 to 2006. In this paper we continue work on applying homogenization procedures to the measured series of the absolute monthly values of the horizontal (H , 1866-2006), vertical (Z, 1951-2006) and inclination components (I , 1866-1941). After homogenization of all measured series for the 1866-2006 time interval, we performed the homogenization of the series of all geomagnetic field elements (X, Y , Z, H , D, I and F) to the level of the 2015 epoch. Since all series except D have a gap of about 10 years in the middle of the 20th century, splitting each of them into two, the homogenization to the level of 2015 was done only for the series available after 1951 (with the D series homogenized for the whole time interval of 1866-2015). The COI geomagnetic field elements are available via the following addresses: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4308022 (Ribeiro et al., 2020) for the original COI data (ASCII and XLSX formats) and https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4308036 (Morozova et al., 2020) for the homogenized COI data (ASCII and XLSX formats).

Closed-forms expressions for the autocorrelation function and the power spectral density of the laser are derived, considering three cases: phase noise with low power, phase noise with medium power and phase noise with high power. The resulting expressions are valid for any optical phase noise probability distribution.

Research paper thumbnail of Recycling pulp mill sludge to improve soil fertility using GIS tools

The levels of heavy metals are below the limits recommended by legislation and the amount of nitrogen and phosphorous to be introduced in soils does not present a risk for nutrient leaching. After identifying the environmental and technical restrictions on its application, an area of 1650 ha was identified where the sludge can be applied in forage crops, fruit trees, olive groves and vineyards. A suitable area was also found for a biosolids storage centre. The use of GIS allowed to define a sludge application index and to produce land-use suitability maps, which can be useful for sludge management.

Following a tendency observed in other European cities, the city of Braga (Portugal) has decided to create an infrastructure for environmental data acquisition and a webbased platform as a public information system. Some of the innovations introduced in this new platform include the use of mobile instrumented units, the extensive use of simulation software to create long-term pollution (air and noise) maps, and the presentation of the information through a geographical interface developed over Google Maps technology. This paper discusses some of the critical aspects regarding the conceptual design of such an information system, and presents the actual information system developed for Braga, named SmarBRAGA.

Uncommon to the drilling practices throughout the world and, particularly, in the Brazilian coast, the well was safely drilled with a surface blowout preventer system (SBOP). Beyond the importance of a world record class, the result points out to an important paradigm shift in the current technical culture throughout the country, considering safety (human, environmental and material), economical and regulatory issues which surrounds such decision taking task. This work presents two discussions: the first one concerns the technical issues considering well control operations performed on the drilled well and on a hypothetical conventional well that could also be drilled under the same conditions. This discussion involves the calculation of pressures at the choke, at the casing and liner shoes, pit gain and produced...

Research paper thumbnail of A management system for end-of-life tyres: A Portuguese case study

Waste Management, 2008

In this context, the Portuguese government decided to apply the EPR concept to tyres, and producers were obliged to constitute an end-of-life management system to promote the collection, recycling and reuse of end-of-life (EOL) tyres. This required producers, distributors, recyclers and retreaders to be identified and characterized, and local processing infrastructures to be analyzed. The information was used to design an economically optimised EOL tyre management system while promoting the activity of all EOL operators in order for the imposed collecting and recovery targets to be fulfilled. This paper discusses the interaction between the different governmental, private and academic institutions for the creation of the integrated management system for EOL tyres, the approach taken, the technical, political and legal aspects underneath them, as well as the environmental consequences induced by the creation of the management system. The results obtained during the first years of operation are reported and show an increase in the collection and recycling of EOL tyres and the consolidation of the collection and processing infrastructures.

Hence, we evaluated factors that would prompt termination of continued collaboration between primary care physicians and consulting cardiologists. methods: One hundred three primary care doctors were interviewed and a 11 point questionnaire was compiled. The eleven potential factors for cause of termination of referrals were graded on a scale of 1 (least important) to 10 (most important). Mean scores were computed for each factor to determine the most important factors for the referring primary care physicians. results: We interviewed 84 physicians that practiced in the city and 19 in rural areas. The average years in practice for the primary care physicians was 20.9 years. The most important factors for termination of referrals in the order of diminishing importance were cardiologist's bedside manners as perceived by the patient (7.9 +2.1), poor feedback from the cardiologist (7.8 +2.3) and patients not getting their questions fully answered by the cardiologist during the visit (7.8+1.9). Less important factors were staff failing to respond to calls promptly (7.2+2.0), ease of getting an appointment (7.0 +2.3), the patient is displeased with the clinical plan (6.6 +2.3), staff friendliness (6.6 +2.5), physician promptness (5.6 +2.6), tests are not done the same day/results are not given promptly (5.6 +2.4), cardiologist keeps the patient even if there is only a minor cardiac problem (5.4 +3.0), and cardiologist is too aggressive with tests (4.9 +2.6). conclusions: The most important factors that result in termination of referrals between primary care physicians and specialist cardiologists include cardiologist's bedside manners as perceived by the patient, poor feedback from the cardiologist, and patients not getting their questions fully answered by the cardiologist during the visit.

The introduction of new sources of generation will introduce the need for new research on voltage-magnitude variations, harmonic emission and harmonic resonance. Statistical performance indicators are expected to play an important role in addressing the hosting capacity of the power system for these new sources. The quickly growing amounts of power-quality data call for automatic analysis methods. Advanced signal-processing tools need to be developed and applied to address this challenge. Equipment with an active power-electronic interface generates waveform distortion at higher frequencies than existing equipment. The emission, spread, consequences and mitigation of this distortion require more research emphasis. The growing complexity of the power system calls for remote identification of system events and load transitions. Future DC networks, at different voltage levels, require the research on DC power quality next to AC power quality. Research on methods to describe and analyse time-varying harmonics has applications in a number of the above-mentioned issues. So does the use of hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and real-time-digital simulation. Existing power quality standards should not form a barrier against future research; instead research should result in improved standards as well as completely new concepts. Examples are: voltage dips in three-phase systems, flicker due to non-incandescent lamps, and voltage variations on the timescale between 1 second and 10 minutes. All together, it is concluded in this paper that sufficient important and interesting research challenges and opportunities remain in the power quality area.
