Transplantation Proceedings, 2008

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is the main cause of liver disease after renal transplantation.... more Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is the main cause of liver disease after renal transplantation. Most patients have seroconverted on dialysis to positive RNA. The viral load increases during immunosuppressive therapy. The risk of developing chronic liver disease is related to the histopathologic findings, duration and severity of the disease, immunosuppression, and transplantation time. Hepatitis C virus infection can predict

We show how these techniques contribute to predict the preferential sites of nucleation of these nanostructures, and also determine the compositional distribution in 1D and 0D nanostructures. The results presented here were produced in the framework of the European Network of Excellence entitled "Self-Assembled semiconductor Nanostructures for new Devices in photonics and Electronics (SANDiE)".

We study in the present paper an idealized nanostructure consisting of a homogeneous distribution of the quaternary GaInAsSb surrounded by a barrier of GaAs. We find that the valence band offset is a critical parameter in modelling its electronic structure. Depending on this value, we predict a transition from type-I to type-II band alignment at a different Sb concentration. The addition of Sb to reduce the transition energy while keeping a type-I alignment is only of benefit at low Sb concentration.

This conclusion is obtained by analyzing the morphology of the GaAs x Sb 1−x nanostructures by high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy in Z-contrast mode. This result shows that a significant fraction of the Sb atoms must segregate along the growth direction during the GaAs capping process.

We present a case of metastases in breast tissue from surgically treated non-small cell bronchogenic carcinoma. A histologic and immunohistologic study was essential for choosing the appropriate treatment for the patient. The patient is alive and disease-free 18 months after the breast surgery.

Its pollen gathers in small quantities during a short pollination period in the months of May and June. Allergy to vine pollen has not been previously documented. We sought to describe a case report of allergy to vine pollen documented on the basis of anamnesis, cutaneous, provocation, and specific IgE determination tests. An allergenic extract was obtained from collected V vinifera pollens by aqueous standard procedures. Pollen counts and pollination periods of this and other common pollens in the area where the patient became symptomatic were studied. Cutaneous tests and the presence of specific IgE to the pollen extracts were performed by prick, CAP, and RAST techniques. Bronchial and conjunctival tests with the involved pollen extracts were also carried out to identify the sensitizing allergens. Five healthy subjects and 5 pollinic patients were used as control subjects and underwent the same tests. Skin prick test responses with vine pollen at different concentrations were positive for the studied patient and negative for the control subjects. Patient serum revealed a total IgE titer of 334 IU/mL and a specific IgE value of 1.3 PRU/mL (RAST class 2) to vine pollen. Bronchial and conjunctival provocation test responses were also positive when the patient was challenged with V vinifera extract. Exposure to the pollen of the vineyard plants (V vinifera) can induce immunologic sensitization and rhinoconjunctivitis/asthma.

The aims of this study are to determine in patients aged >65 years: (1) whether the indications for surgery on multinodular goitre (MG) differ with respect to younger patients; (2) the surgical results; and (3) whether the postsurgery morbidity and mortality rates are higher. Patients and method: Eighty-one patients aged over 65 years who were receiving surgery for MG were analysed; 40 49%) presented with associated co-morbidities. Sixty percent had thyroid symptoms, either compressive and/or toxic. All underwent programmed surgery following stabilisation and strict control of their co-morbidities. As a control group we used 510 MG patients receiving surgery and aged between 30 and 65 years. Results: Compared with the control group the geriatric patients had a longer time of goitre evolution (P=0.032), greater presence of symptoms (P=0.001) and a higher percentage of intrathoracic component (P=0.001). Compressive symptoms were the major indication for surgery (P=0.001). Postoperative complications occurred in 40% of the patients, a higher rate than in the control group (28%; P=0.011), although a large percentage of those complications were transitory. Definitive complications included two recurrent laryngeal nerve injuries (2.5%). The preoperative symptoms remitted in all the patients, and only three were associated with a thyroid carcinoma, one of which was anaplastic. Conclusions: MG operated on in elderly patients has a longer evolution and an intrathoracic component, and surgery is indicated restrictively. With close monitoring of the co-morbidities and a programmed operation the results with regard to morbidity and mortality are similar to those obtained at younger ages.
