This review aimed to synthesize findings on the association between self-perception of aging and quality of life among older adults aged 60 and above. Research Design and Methods A systematic search was conducted in 4 electronic databases (Ovid Medline, PsycInfo, CINAHL, and Web of Science). Studies conducted in English and including measures on the perception of aging and quality of life were included in this review. A total of 32 observational studies (21 cross-sectional, 8 longitudinal, 2 mixed-method, and 1 qualitative) met the inclusion criteria. Outcomes reported in the included studies were quality of life, physical health and functioning, psychological health, mental health, and general well-being. Results Overall, 20 quantitative studies indicated a strong association between positive perception of aging and increased quality of life. Simil...

Specifically, the authors examine the dual roles of two of Hofstede's national culture dimensions (individualism and indulgence) in driving the implementation of people management practices and in moderating the relationship between people management and product quality performance.Design/methodology/approachThe authors’ dataset combines a survey of 976 firms from 22 countries with Hofstede's national culture index. A multi-level analysis, at firm and country levels, is used for investigating the interplay between two dimensions of national culture (individualism and indulgence) on people management practices and product quality performance.FindingsThe authors' findings show the negative relationship between indulgence (at country level) and people management practices (at firm level) while individualism (at country level) strengthens the r...

A face-to-face interview was conducted with 20 older Chinese people in Hong Kong. The qualitative data were classified into six groups of factors, viz., personal factors, interpersonal relationships, product factors, environmental factors, desired outcomes, and economic factors, which are all interdependent. Findings suggest that personal factors are the core factor as they contribute the most to the perceptions and attitudes of the older people towards gaming. Interestingly, most participants were unable to clearly define gaming, and the older generation had no consensus. These findings have important implications in removing the barriers and difficulties that hinder the older Chinese people from gaming.

International Conference on Electronic Business 2020, 2020

Human longevity is constantly changing the demographic outlook of the world's population and olde... more Human longevity is constantly changing the demographic outlook of the world's population and older people are projected to double in the next 30 years from 11% to 22% of the world's population. Malaysia is no exception and, like most western and developing nations, the number of Malaysians aged 60 years and above has been gradually rising from the 1970s onwards and is currently estimated to represent 10% of its population. This has created an urgent need to develop age-friendly cities, so that older individuals living in urban areas can have an improved life. It is important that the aging population continues to lead healthy and productive lives as far as possible. In this project, which is a work in progress, we surveyed a suburban community, aged 50 years and above, residing in Bandar Sunway and its vicinity in the state of Selangor Darul Ehsan, Malaysia. The aim was to assess their health and perceptions on mobility through targeted questionnaires, in-depth interviews and focus groups and identify the factors associated with healthy aging in a holistic manner. The overall goal is to promote a healthy mind in a healthy body despite the advancing years. In the preliminary phase we surveyed 73 participants aged between 52-85 years and compared responses and clinical parameters for individuals below (N = 36) and ≥ 65 years (N = 37) in age. Based on their Body Mass Index (BMI), the participants were generally healthy with a normal BMI (45%) or slightly overweight (41%) with a higher BMI and blood lipid levels. There were no significant differences in the cognitive assessments between the two age groups (p = 0.945). A majority (70%) of the participants were satisfied with their lives in Bandar Sunway, but some reported several health related issues and chronic diseases. However, this was not a factor that hindered their quality of life. Older adults in Bandar Sunway still preferred driving their own vehicles instead of taking public transports. This was due to several shortfalls in the transportation systems: pricing, schedules of transport, safety, and cleanliness. Preliminary results have identified several aspects of public transportation in urban areas that can be improved to better serve the aging community. In doing so, we anticipate the findings and recommendations will be applicable to a much wider community in Malaysia and other parts of the world. The project is aligned with the theme of improving health and well-being and will provide a model for understanding and dealing with aging in the local community.

Additionally, we assess whether there is a difference if the human narrator is a child, a young adult, or an older adult. A sample of 124 older adults was collected to test the research hypotheses. Our findings suggest that in general instruction videos with human narrators are preferred by the older adults over the one without (i.e., cartoon character). More interestingly, the older adults prefer child as the human narrator (to young adult and older adult), as reflected in the highest perceived effectiveness and social presence of the video garnered among all the video versions. These insights have important implications on teaching and promoting older adults’ use of gerontechnology applications via instruction videos. We conclude this paper with a discussion on the research implic...

Research paper thumbnail of Does Instructional Video Advertising Influence Behavioral Intention? Comparative Study Between Hong Kong and Malaysia

This study was conducted with 60 participants (30 males and 30 females) from Hong Kong and 62 participants from Malaysia (31 males and 31 females) to investigate whether the video type and cultural/individual difference factors has an impact on individuals’ behavioral intention. The findings of this study reveal interesting comparative results between Hong Kong and Malaysia as well as provide useful insights for marketing practitioners.
