The Lydians, Carians, Lycians and the natives of Pamphylia and Cilicia were of Luwian origins. The Lycaonians, the Pisidians and the Phrygians belonged to the Phrygian ethnic group. The regions of Ionia, Aeolis, Doris, Troas and the coasts of Pamphylia and Cilicia were populated by Greeks, descended from the Mycenaean and Archaic Hellenic colonization and the Hellenization of the natives. The Mysians and the Doliones were Proto-Thracian populations, while the neighboring Bithynians were a Thracian proper tribe. The Cappadocians of Cappadocia proper and the Western Pontos (see below) and the neighboring Armenians were speaking several "hybrid" Phrygian, Iranian, Luwian, Hurro-Urartian

Two centuries later, the Western Roman Empire withdrew its troops from the island. It seems that the independent "Romano-British kingdom" preserved its unity and coherence but soon after, it was struck by the ruthless Anglo-Saxon invasion. The Sarmatians were now merged with the Celtic and Romano-Briton population, taking the lead in checking the barbarians. There is a strong possibility that this Sarmatian presence in Britain provides the historical background of the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table.

The trireme supported the thalassocracies of Athens, Carthage, Corinth, Syracuse, Tyre, Caisra (Caere, modern Cerveteri), Aegina and other Greek, Phoenician and Etruscan city-states. The campaign of Alexander the Great in Asia and the overthrow of the Persian empire created a new statehood for the Greek world. The new Greek/Hellenistic kingdoms or other states which were created in Asia and Egypt were overwhelmingly larger than the old city-states. The new political situation had its impact on warfare, both on land and sea. The old hoplite armies numbering a few thousands hoplites gave way to armies of tens of thousands of soldiers, based on the Macedonian-type phalanx and the heavy cavalry of mainly Macedonian Hetairoi and Thessalians. Similarly, the older fleets of the city-states which used the trireme as their basic warship, were replaced by the fleets of the colossal Hellenistic states in which the main warships were a number of ships larger or much larger than the trireme. This group of warships is collectively known in the plural as polyereis (πολυήρεις) in Greek, and later in the Roman Age as multumeremes being the Latin translation of πολυήρεις. The most typical of them were the tetreres (quadrireme in Latin), the penteres (quinquereme), the hexeres (sexereme), the hepteres (septemereme), the hocteres (octoreme) and the
