The focus is primarily on one student. Her understanding is seen to be constituted and evidenced by her actions, including writing, frequent conversations with a peer, occasional contributions to class discussion and sustained use of her graphics calculator. La constructing this framework, Cath is seeking to gain insight into how myths develop, how myths have been identified and interpreted by other researchers, and how others have described the role of myths in society. Her interpretation of other people's research and theorising constitutes a synthesis of the literature (traditionally called a 'literature review') and is assisting her to construct an interpretive framework for a subsequent analysis of classroom discursive practices in school science. During this self-reflective process, Cath is considering how her study is to be legitimated. In this respect, she is examining the relationship between ethics, theory and politics in interpretive research.

Our purpose is to orient students, faculty and beginning researchers to the newer paradigms that enable researchers to undertake uniquely powerful and insightful inquiries that contribute to transforming the landscape of education.

However, after colonialism when Islamic societies became somewhat uncritical followers of Western civilization, they lost their intellectual leadership position in the world. If Islamic societies want to regain a high standing in the modern world, it is clear that they need to take the path of modern science and technology but, importantly, a science that is ‘beholden’ to Islamic principles and views. In this paper we shall demonstrate that a transformation of the postgraduate education system of Saudi Arabia can enhance Islamic values in the education system of Saudi Arabia and that the inclusion of critical auto/ethnographic research can make a major contribution to this process. Critical auto/ethnography is a methodology produced by combining three major research paradigms: interpretivism, criticalism and postmoder...

To investigate this issue, I (first author) designed a critical auto/ethnographic methodology with which to engage in critical reflexivity about my previous experience of teaching and learning and to interview six of my fellow Saudi pre-service colleagues who are now mathematics teachers. This paper illustrates the importance of metaphor in portraying their beliefs about teaching and learning. Also, in this paper we demonstrate the significance of using metaphor as a tool for elaborating conceptual understanding of the process of teaching and learning, as a means of transforming Saudi teacher's teaching performance.

Pedagogical strategies were developed to enable teachers to detect and remedy these intuitive ways of making sense of everyday experience or, for most students, of the canonical representations contained in the artificial world of the science textbook..
