Extensive areas of commons have survived in several English cities including Town Moor in Newcastle upon Tyne. Such urban commons have been less studied than their rural counterparts, but are important sites for the surrounding large urban populations. A mixture of textual analysis, ethnographic observations and interviews were used to investigate the current and historic uses, pressures and perceptions of Town Moor. Uses and perceptions of urban commons appear to be highly varied, with high levels of awareness of individual sites and high valuation of these for their ecological, recreational, historical, and landscape characteristics. Awareness of what are commons and the rights and ownerships which goes with these is patchy and in many cases incorrect; this does not however affect the overall high valuation given to local urban commons. Individual benefits and positive perceptions are important to the long term positive management and survival of urban commons.

Based on five pilots studies approaches for implementing and ecosystem services approach are presented.

This pilot study has sought to identify and demonstrate how an Ecosystem Services Approach (ESA) can input into and add value to regional
and other strategic planning.
This study has sought to answer the following broad research question:
Can we translate the Ecosystem Services Approach from a general policy commitment to useful practical tool, capable of successfully inputting and adding value to processes of strategic planning (including through inputting to Sustainability Appraisal)?

a. What indicators/measures of Environmental Capacity can be put into place in the near future within the region?
b. What are the aspirations regarding longer term indicators / measures of Environmental Capacity in the region?

A pest risk assessment scheme, adapted from the EPPO (European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organisation) scheme, was developed to assess the risks posed to UK species, habitats and ecosystems by non-native taxa. 2. The scheme provides a structured framework for evaluating the potential for non-native organisms, whether intentional or unintentional introductions, to enter, establish, spread and cause significant impacts in all or part of the UK. Specialist modules permit the relative importance of entry pathways, the vulnerability of receptors and the consequences of policies to be assessed and appropriate risk management options to be selected. Spreadsheets for summarising the level of risk and uncertainty, invasive attributes and economic impact were created. In addition, new methods for quantifying economic impact and summarising risk and uncertainty were explored. 3. Although designed for the UK, the scheme can readily be applied elsewhere.

In-depth interviews and site visits were undertaken with 18 wetland managers, the interviews covered four broad themes, the type of restoration and management, the reasons for management, the main risks and problems faced and practical advice to future practitioners. The keys to successful wetland managment appear to be availability of site data, awareness of socioeconomic and political dimensions (not just ecological issues), involvement of key stakeholders, building on existing good practice, and adoption of an adaptive management approach.
