Because it is also difficult to integrate the pill into existing contraceptive infrastructures, it appears that this technology is not likely to emerge into general use for quite some time, if ever. Extracting history of technology from Oudshoorn’s book is possible only after parsing through a pedagogical maze of “networks,” “bodies,” “masculinities,” and other constructs. This is an exercise that some readers may find tedious. In several chapters the material is redundant, perhaps because portions of the book were previously published as articles and essays. There are numerous lengthy quotations that would better have been integrated into the text or notes. Nevertheless, Oudshoorn does achieve her goal of explaining why the Pill has no male equivalent. In the end, the popularity of Viagra, a product with “the fastest takeoff ever recorded for a new drug,” does relate to the male pill. It is hard to conceive ...

In civil works, including water resources development, recreation, emergency management, and regulatory activities, this was a period of great change and challenge for the Corps and the Tulsa District. likewise, in military construction activities, the Army engineers and Tulsa District personnel responded to a complex array of national defense needs, including housing, training facilities, and environmental restoration. From national development demands and constraints to geopolitical transformations, the Corps of Engineers and districts like Tulsa strove to meet local needs and cope with international challenges of the modem world. What follows is the story of one Corps district and its activities in Oklahoma, and parts of Texas, Arkansas, and Kansas.

Many studies have revealed that intralesional interferon-2b therapy and pulsed dye laser therapy have numerous advantages over other modalities of treatment. Objective : The purpose of this study was to determine if combination therapy with intralesional interferon-2b and pulsed dye laser might offer an effective treatment for periungual warts. Methods : Thirty-three patients were randomly assigned to one of three study groups. In group A, the patients received both intralesional interferon-2b treatment and pulsed dye laser(PDL) therapy (n=13). Group B patients were treated with intralesional interferon-2b alone (n=10) and group C was done with PDL therapy only (n=10). Results : The clearance rate was 92.3% for the patients treated with the combination therapy of intralesional interferon-2b treatment and pulsed dye laser(PDL) therapy. It was 50% for the patients with the intralesional interferon-2b treatment alone, and 0% for the group with the PDL therapy only. No significant side effects were observed. At 6 months after cessation of the therapy, total 2 cases (one from group A and the other from group B) were recurred. Conclusion : The combination therapy with intralesional interferon-2b treatment and pulsed dye laser therapy was highly effective for the treatment of recalcitrant periungual warts. When hostilities began in August 1914, Germany was the leading manufacturer of chemicals and, in particular, controlled the world's largest supply of mineral potash. Potash, an organic compound, is a major component of most plant fertilizers and is also used in the manufacture of black gunpowder. Germany placed an embargo on potash exports immediately after the start of the Great War, cutting off sales to the United States, which was the world's largest consumer of potash fertilizers. In Great Britain, the war created an enormous demand for cordite (smokeless gunpowder) and the acetone used to produce it. Responding to this wartime opportunity, enterprising American businessmen built a new industry designed to extract both potash and acetone from California's giant kelp. Although short-lived, California's World War I kelp industry was the largest ever created in the United States for the processing of plants from the ocean.'

Penicillin saved thousands of soldiers from the horrors of gas gangrene and the other bacterial diseases that were rampant during previous conflicts. During WW I, twelve to fifteen percent of the wounded treated in front-line hospitals died from infections, a figure that dropped to three percent during WW II, due largely to advances in medical care. 1 In the postwar era, millions of civilians also benefited from wartime development of a new antiobiotics industry. The penicillin project was one of the largest undertaken during the war and is undoubtedly among the most successful research and development ventures ever. Most importandy, the project demonstrates the positive impact of government-sponsored research and is an outstanding example of how to decisively expedite a transition from research to mass production. Following the war, Vannevar Bush noted that "one can draw numerous lessons from the [penicillin] experience which apply to relations between i.
