The aim of our study was to stablish the possible alternations in fatty acid composition of brain... more The aim of our study was to stablish the possible alternations in fatty acid composition of brain phospholipids in rats on a standard and high-fat diet supplemented with buckwheat leaf and fl ower mixture (BLF) and subsequent possible benefi cial effects of BLF. Four months old male Wistar rats were randomly divided into fi ve experimental groups fed a standard diet, standard diet supplemented with 5% BLF, high-fat diet, high-fat diet with full-period (13 weeks) of 5% BLF supplementation and high-fat diet with partial-period (7 weeks) of 5% BLF supplementation. Gas-liquid chromatography was performed to analyze the fatty acids in hexane lipid extracts of whole rat brains. Supplementation with BLF did not induce signifi cant changes in fatty acid composition of whole brain phospholipids in rats fed the standard diet. In rats on high-fat diet concomitant (full-period) BLF supplementation increased eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3, EPA), total n-6 and n-6/n-3 ratio, and decreased the percentage of oleic acid (18:1n-9) and estimated activity of Δ-9 desaturase. When BLF application was postponed (partial-period) in the case of developed hyperlipidemia, a decrease of stearic acid (18:0) accompanied with an increased estimated Δ-9 desaturase activity was observed. Regardless of BLF supplementation all high-fat diet-fed groups showed an elevated percentage of linoleic acid (18:2n-6, LA) and a reduced estimated Δ-6 desaturase activity. BLF contributes to the maintenance of stable fatty acid composition of brain phospholipids and supports normal brain function in high-fat diet rats, with more positive effects when BLF was applied before hyperlipidemia developed. This could be the mode of buckwheat health benefi cial effects on the brain.

Intrasynaptosomal mitochondria Ca2+ uptake via an energy-driven Ca2+ uniporter have Km = 112.73 +/- 7.3 micromol x l(-1) and Vmax = 21.97 +/- 1.7 nmol 45Ca2+ mg(-1). Ca2+ release trough a Na+/Ca2+ antiporter was measured with a Km for Na+ of 43.7 +/- 2.6 mmol x l(-1), and Vmax of 1.5 +/- 0.3 nmol 45Ca2+ mg(-1). Addition of estradiol in preincubation mixture did not affect the uptake of Ca2+ mediated by the ruthenium red-sensitive uniporter, while it produced biphasic effect on Na-dependent Ca2+ efflux. Estradiol at concentrations up to 1 nmol x l(-1) decreased the efflux significantly (63% inhibition with respect to the control), and at concentrations above 10 nmol x l(-1) increased it exponentially. The maximum inhibiting concentration of estradiol (0.5 nmol x l(-1)) increased the affinity of the uniporter (Km reduced by about 30%), without affecting significantly the capacity (Vmax) for Na+. The results presented suggest that estradiol inhibits Na-dependent Ca2+ efflux from mitochondria and acts on mitochondrial retention of Ca2+, which may modulate mitochondrial and consequently synaptosomal content of Ca2+, and in this way exerts its role in the homeostasis of calcium in nerve terminals.

Adjuvant endocrine BC therapy using aromatase inhibitors may also influence FA metabolism. Thus, the aim of our study was to compare plasma total lipids FA status in newly diagnosed postmenopausal patients with BC and in postmenopausal women with BC receiving aromatase inhibitors at least 2 years after completing chemotherapy with healthy women. Metabolic health status in 171 participants was defined according to criteria for metabolic syndrome. Obese and nonobese metabolically unhealthy persons (MUHO and MUHNO) had higher energy intake of n-6 PUFA (7.82 ± 1.03 and 7.49 ± 0.86) and lower intake of n-3 PUFA (0.60 ± 0.12 and 0.62 ± 0.11) compared to obese and nonobese metabolically healthy persons (MHO and MHNO) (5.92 ± 0.63 and 5.72 ± 0.67; 1.20 ± 0.07 and 1.22 ± 0.09, respectively) and a higher n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio. The study included 20 patients (64–86 years) with femoral neck fractures indicated for surgery and a control group of 17 elderly subjects without fractures or serious chronic diseases. Plasma was obtained during the first 12 h postfracture and presurgery and 7 days postop. Compared to the control, patients had significantly higher saturated FA (SFA) and monounsaturated FA as well as increased TNF-α and IL-6. Opposite to that, levels of individual and total n-6 polyunsaturated FA (PUFA), individual and total n-3 PUFA, n-6/n-3 ratio, and levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) were markedly lower in the patient than in the controls. In healthy 4 h after CGPL was decreased of total Ch (-6.3%), TG (-12%) and increased of HDL-Ch, in CHD pts was increased of TC and LDL-Ch. The insulin level after CGPL rose in gr 1 and gr 2, but in gr 3 the rise was higher and longer. The NOx concentration rose after CGPL in gr 1 (15%, p<0.05) and decreased in gr 2 (-39%, p<0.02) and in gr 3 (-19%, p<0.05). After CGPL in CHD pts (gr 2 and 3) was increased of levels F , PA and hsCRP. The aim of this study was to examine the rapid non-genomic effect of 17β-estradiol (E2) on Ca(2+)... more The aim of this study was to examine the rapid non-genomic effect of 17β-estradiol (E2) on Ca(2+) transport in mitochondria isolated from the nerve terminals (synaptosomes) of caudate nuclei (NC) and brain stems (BS) of ovariectomised female rats. In physiological conditions no effect of E2 on Ca(2+) influx into synaptosomal mitochondria through ruthenium red (RR)-sensitive uniporter was observed. However, in the presence of uncoupling agent carbonyl cyanide4-(trifluoromethoxy)phenylhydrazone (FCCP) (1μmol/l), pre-treatment with 0.5nmol/l E2 protected mitochondrial membrane potential and consequently increased Ca(2+) influx (2.3-fold in NC and 3.1-fold in BS). At the same time, 0.5nmol/l E2 by increasing the affinity of mitochondrial Na(+)/Ca(2+) exchanger for Na(+) inhibited mitochondrial Ca(2+) efflux in NC and BS by about 40%. Also, the specific binding of physiological E2 concentrations (0.1-10nmol/l) to isolated synaptosomal mitochondria was detected. Using membrane impermeable E2 bound to bovine serum albumin and selective inhibitor of mitochondrial Na(+)/Ca(2+) exchanger, we obtained that E2&#39;s action on mitochondrial Ca(2+) efflux at least partially is due to the direct effects on the mitochondrial membrane and/or Na(+)/Ca(2+) exchanger located in inner mitochondrial membrane. Our results implicate E2 as a modulator of Ca(2+) concentration in mitochondrial matrix, and ultimately in the cytosol. Given the vital role of Ca(2+) in regulation of total nerve cells activity, especially energy metabolism, neurotransmission and directing the cells toward survival or cell death, the effects on mitochondrial Ca(2+) transport could be one of the important modes of E2 neuromodulatory action independent of the genome.

The aim of this study was to investigate effect of long-term handball training on the body composition, lipid profile and the plasma phospholipid fatty acid composition in female and male younger players. Methods. Seventeen female and 15 male active handball players, aged 16?20 years, who competed at the national/international level, were enrolled in the study. A control group was established from healthy, sedentary individuals (13 females and 19 males, aged 17?21 years), comparable to the athletes in terms of age, sex and body mass index. Results. Their effects were examined in patients with rheumatoid arthritis; (2) Methods: Sixty patients with active rheumatoid arthritis were involved in a prospective, randomized trial of a 12 week supplementation with fish oil (group I), fish oil with primrose evening oil (group II), or with no supplementation (group III). Clinical and laboratory evaluations were done at the beginning and at the end of the study; (3) Results: The Disease Activity Score 28 (DAS 28 score), number of tender joints and visual analogue scale (VAS) score decreased notably after supplementation in groups I and II (p < 0.001). In plasma phospholipids the n-6/n-3 fatty acids ratio declined from 15.47 ± 5.51 to 10.62 ± 5.07 (p = 0.005), and from 18.15 ± 5.04 to 13.50 ± 4.81 (p = 0.005) in groups I and II respectively. The combination of n-3 PUFA and GLA (group II) increased ɤ-linolenic acid (0.00 ± 0.00 to 0.13 ± 0.11, p < 0.001), which was undetectable in all groups before the treatments; (4) Conclusion: Daily supplementation with n-3 fatty acids alone or in combination with GLA exerted significant clinical benefits and certain changes in disease activity.

This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted during the preparatory training in a closed campus, where 18 players (8 males, 10 females) consumed 100 mL of chokeberry juice, while 14 players (7 males, 7 females) consumed placebo. Lipid status, glucose, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and percentages of fatty acids were assessed at baseline and at the end of the study. Consumption of chokeberry juice induced decreases of C18:1n-9 and C18:3n-3 in men, but no changes in female players. Significant decrease of triglyceride level was found in BCO rats after the estradiol treatment. Both hormones elevated proportion of 18:1n-7 fatty acid in INT, but they failed to have such an effect in BCO. Estradiol increased 22:5n-3 and total n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in intact, and decreased 18:2n-6 in BCO rats. Significantly lower level of total n-3 was found in progesterone-treated than in estradiol-treated BCO rats. Our objective was to examine inhibitory effect of synthetized propafenone derivatives 3-(2-Fluorophenyl)-1-(2-(2-hydroxy-3-propylamino-propoxy)phenyl)-propan-1-one hydrochloride (5OF) and3-(2-Trifluoromethyl-phenyl)-1-(2-(2-hydroxy-3propylamino-propoxy)-phenyl)-propan-1-one hydrochloride (5CF3) on biofilm and pyocyanin in Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical strains. Methods Effects were tested on nine clinical isolates and one control laboratory strain of P. aeruginosa. In vitro analysis of biofilm growing was performed by incubating bacteria (0.5 McFarland) with 5OF and 5CF3 (500-31.2 µg/ml) and measuring optical density at 570 nm. Bacteria in medium without compounds were positive control. Blank medium (an uninoculated medium without test compounds) was used as negative control. Pyocyanin production was estimated by optical density at 520 nm, after bacteria incubated with 5CF3 and 5OF (250 and 500 μg/ml), treated with chloroform, and chloroform layer mixed with HCl. Results 500 µg/ml of 5OF and 5CF3 completely inhibited biofilm formation in 10/10 and 4/10 strains, respectively.250 µg/mlof5OF and 5CF3 strongly inhibited biofilm formation in 7/10 strains, while inhibition with 125 µg/ml of 5OF and 5CF3 was moderate. Lower concentrations had almost no effect on biofilm production. Pyocyanin production was reduced to less than 40% of the control value in 6/9, and less than 50% of the control in 7/9 strains with 500 μg/ml of 5OF and 5CF3, respectively. At 250 µg/ml 5OF and 5CF3 most strains had pyocyanin production above 50% of the control value. Conclusion Synthetized Propafenone derivatives, 5OF and 5CF3, inhibited biofilms and pyocyaninin production of Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical strains. Presented results suggest that propafenone derivatives are potential lead-compounds for synthesis of novel antipseudomonal drugs.

Viability of cells grown with scaffolds was assessed by MTT and LDH assays. No significant cytotoxic effect of any of the tested materials was shown. Staining with alizarin red and estimated alkaline phosphatase activity to identify differentiation, demonstrated osteoblastic phenotype of SHED and newly deposited and mineralized extra cellular matrix (ECM) in presence of all tested scaffolds. The developed ECM seen at scanning electronic micrographs additionally confirmed the osteogenic differentiation and biocompatibility between cells and materials. In summary, all studied biomaterials are suitable carriers for proliferation and osteoblastic differentiation of dental pulp mesenchymal stem cells in vitro.

Design Science Research (DSR) has sparked a renaissance of contributions to IS, but its rigor and... more Design Science Research (DSR) has sparked a renaissance of contributions to IS, but its rigor and value of DSR could be increased by expanding its scope beyond its engineering roots to bring all modes of scientific inquiry to bear-exploratory, theoretical , experimental, and applied science / engineering (AS/E). All DSR Cycle activities can be realized as instances of one or more of the four modes. The rigor of DSR can therefore be defended in terms of the goals, research products, and standards of rigor already established for each mode. There is, moreover, a synergy among the modes that can only be realized when all four are brought to bear, because each informs the other three. To exclude any mode of inquiry from DSR, therefore, is to impoverish knowledge about its objects of inquiry. Based on these insights, we propose a modified Cycles Model for DSR realized under the disciplines of the four modes of scientific inquiry.

Objectives: Industrially produced trans fatty acid (iTFA) have adverse health effects and thus th... more Objectives: Industrially produced trans fatty acid (iTFA) have adverse health effects and thus their consumption should be limited. The aim of this study was to determine and compare the iTFA content in frequently consumed food products by young adults from the Serbian and Slovenian market with supposedly elevated iTFA content in 2015. At the time of this study, there was no recommended limit of iTFA in both countries, and reduction of iTFA in foods was on voluntary basis. Methods: We determined iTFA content in food products, 19 from the Serbian and 22 from the Slovenian market, blinded and analysed in the same analytical run. Contents of fatty acids (FA) methyl esters were analysed by capillary gas chromatography with a flame ionisation detector. Heptadecanoic acid was used as internal standard. Individual FA along with TFA were expressed as percentages of total measured FA. The amount of each FA in the sample was then calculated from the response factor and the transformation factor of the FA from the FA methyl ester content. Results: Elaidic acid (C18:1t) was found as the most abundant TFA in analysed products, ranging from 0.52 g/100 g of total FA in chocolate candy up to 60.4 g/100 g in a salami from Serbian market. In Slovenian products, the values for elaidic acid were lower, 0.04-3.95 g/100 g of total FA, except in one type of wafers (24.3 g/100 g). Conclusions: The majority of analysed products from the Serbian and three from Slovenian market exceeded the recommended WHO and EU limit of 2% iTFA of total fat in foods. Samples of frequently consumed salami, wafers, tea biscuits, and snacks were identified as products with potentially higher burden of iTFA in diets of young adults in Serbia.

Four months old male Wistar rats were randomly divided into fi ve experimental groups fed a standard diet, standard diet supplemented with 5% BLF, high-fat diet, high-fat diet with full-period (13 weeks) of 5% BLF supplementation and high-fat diet with partial-period (7 weeks) of 5% BLF supplementation. Gas-liquid chromatography was performed to analyze the fatty acids in hexane lipid extracts of whole rat brains. Supplementation with BLF did not induce signifi cant changes in fatty acid composition of whole brain phospholipids in rats fed the standard diet. In rats on high-fat diet concomitant (full-period) BLF supplementation increased eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3, EPA), total n-6 and n-6/n-3 ratio, and decreased the percentage of oleic acid (18:1n-9) and estimated activity of Δ-9 desaturase. When BLF application was postponed (partial-period) in the case of developed hyperlipidemia, a decrease of stearic acid (18:0) accompanied with an increased estimated Δ-9 desaturase activity was observed. Regardless of BLF supplementation all high-fat diet-fed groups showed an elevated percentage of linoleic acid (18:2n-6, LA) and a reduced estimated Δ-6 desaturase activity. BLF contributes to the maintenance of stable fatty acid composition of brain phospholipids and supports normal brain function in high-fat diet rats, with more positive effects when BLF was applied before hyperlipidemia developed. This could be the mode of buckwheat health benefi cial effects on the brain.

Intrasynaptosomal mitochondria Ca2+ uptake via an energy-driven Ca2+ uniporter have Km = 112.73 +/- 7.3 micromol x l(-1) and Vmax = 21.97 +/- 1.7 nmol 45Ca2+ mg(-1). Ca2+ release trough a Na+/Ca2+ antiporter was measured with a Km for Na+ of 43.7 +/- 2.6 mmol x l(-1), and Vmax of 1.5 +/- 0.3 nmol 45Ca2+ mg(-1). Addition of estradiol in preincubation mixture did not affect the uptake of Ca2+ mediated by the ruthenium red-sensitive uniporter, while it produced biphasic effect on Na-dependent Ca2+ efflux. Estradiol at concentrations up to 1 nmol x l(-1) decreased the efflux significantly (63% inhibition with respect to the control), and at concentrations above 10 nmol x l(-1) increased it exponentially. The maximum inhibiting concentration of estradiol (0.5 nmol x l(-1)) increased the affinity of the uniporter (Km reduced by about 30%), without affecting significantly the capacity (Vmax) for Na+. The results presented suggest that estradiol inhibits Na-dependent Ca2+ efflux from mitochondria and acts on mitochondrial retention of Ca2+, which may modulate mitochondrial and consequently synaptosomal content of Ca2+, and in this way exerts its role in the homeostasis of calcium in nerve terminals.

Metabolic health status in 171 participants was defined according to criteria for metabolic syndrome. Obese and nonobese metabolically unhealthy persons (MUHO and MUHNO) had higher energy intake of n-6 PUFA (7.82 ± 1.03 and 7.49 ± 0.86) and lower intake of n-3 PUFA (0.60 ± 0.12 and 0.62 ± 0.11) compared to obese and nonobese metabolically healthy persons (MHO and MHNO) (5.92 ± 0.63 and 5.72 ± 0.67; 1.20 ± 0.07 and 1.22 ± 0.09, respectively) and a higher n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio. The study included 20 patients (64–86 years) with femoral neck fractures indicated for surgery and a control group of 17 elderly subjects without fractures or serious chronic diseases. In healthy 4 h after CGPL was decreased of total Ch (-6.3%), TG (-12%) and increased of HDL-Ch, in CHD pts was increased of TC and LDL-Ch. The insulin level after CGPL rose in gr 1 and gr 2, but in gr 3 the rise was higher and longer. The NOx concentration rose after CGPL in gr 1 (15%, p<0.05) and decreased in gr 2 (-39%, p<0.02) and in gr 3 (-19%, p<0.05). The aim of this study was to examine the rapid non-genomic effect of 17β-estradiol (E2) on Ca(2+)... more The aim of this study was to examine the rapid non-genomic effect of 17β-estradiol (E2) on Ca(2+) transport in mitochondria isolated from the nerve terminals (synaptosomes) of caudate nuclei (NC) and brain stems (BS) of ovariectomised female rats. In physiological conditions no effect of E2 on Ca(2+) influx into synaptosomal mitochondria through ruthenium red (RR)-sensitive uniporter was observed. However, in the presence of uncoupling agent carbonyl cyanide4-(trifluoromethoxy)phenylhydrazone (FCCP) (1μmol/l), pre-treatment with 0.5nmol/l E2 protected mitochondrial membrane potential and consequently increased Ca(2+) influx (2.3-fold in NC and 3.1-fold in BS). At the same time, 0.5nmol/l E2 by increasing the affinity of mitochondrial Na(+)/Ca(2+) exchanger for Na(+) inhibited mitochondrial Ca(2+) efflux in NC and BS by about 40%. Also, the specific binding of physiological E2 concentrations (0.1-10nmol/l) to isolated synaptosomal mitochondria was detected. Using membrane impermeable E2 bound to bovine serum albumin and selective inhibitor of mitochondrial Na(+)/Ca(2+) exchanger, we obtained that E2&#39;s action on mitochondrial Ca(2+) efflux at least partially is due to the direct effects on the mitochondrial membrane and/or Na(+)/Ca(2+) exchanger located in inner mitochondrial membrane. Our results implicate E2 as a modulator of Ca(2+) concentration in mitochondrial matrix, and ultimately in the cytosol. Given the vital role of Ca(2+) in regulation of total nerve cells activity, especially energy metabolism, neurotransmission and directing the cells toward survival or cell death, the effects on mitochondrial Ca(2+) transport could be one of the important modes of E2 neuromodulatory action independent of the genome.

Their effects were examined in patients with rheumatoid arthritis; (2) Methods: Sixty patients with active rheumatoid arthritis were involved in a prospective, randomized trial of a 12 week supplementation with fish oil (group I), fish oil with primrose evening oil (group II), or with no supplementation (group III). Clinical and laboratory evaluations were done at the beginning and at the end of the study; (3) Results: The Disease Activity Score 28 (DAS 28 score), number of tender joints and visual analogue scale (VAS) score decreased notably after supplementation in groups I and II (p < 0.001). In plasma phospholipids the n-6/n-3 fatty acids ratio declined from 15.47 ± 5.51 to 10.62 ± 5.07 (p = 0.005), and from 18.15 ± 5.04 to 13.50 ± 4.81 (p = 0.005) in groups I and II respectively. The combination of n-3 PUFA and GLA (group II) increased ɤ-linolenic acid (0.00 ± 0.00 to 0.13 ± 0.11, p < 0.001), which was undetectable in all groups before the treatments; (4) Conclusion: Daily supplementation with n-3 fatty acids alone or in combination with GLA exerted significant clinical benefits and certain changes in disease activity.

This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted during the preparatory training in a closed campus, where 18 players (8 males, 10 females) consumed 100 mL of chokeberry juice, while 14 players (7 males, 7 females) consumed placebo. Lipid status, glucose, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and percentages of fatty acids were assessed at baseline and at the end of the study. Consumption of chokeberry juice induced decreases of C18:1n-9 and C18:3n-3 in men, but no changes in female players. Significant decrease of triglyceride level was found in BCO rats after the estradiol treatment. Both hormones elevated proportion of 18:1n-7 fatty acid in INT, but they failed to have such an effect in BCO. Estradiol increased 22:5n-3 and total n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in intact, and decreased 18:2n-6 in BCO rats. Our objective was to examine inhibitory effect of synthetized propafenone derivatives 3-(2-Fluorophenyl)-1-(2-(2-hydroxy-3-propylamino-propoxy)phenyl)-propan-1-one hydrochloride (5OF) and3-(2-Trifluoromethyl-phenyl)-1-(2-(2-hydroxy-3propylamino-propoxy)-phenyl)-propan-1-one hydrochloride (5CF3) on biofilm and pyocyanin in Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical strains. Methods Effects were tested on nine clinical isolates and one control laboratory strain of P. aeruginosa. In vitro analysis of biofilm growing was performed by incubating bacteria (0.5 McFarland) with 5OF and 5CF3 (500-31.2 µg/ml) and measuring optical density at 570 nm. Bacteria in medium without compounds were positive control. Blank medium (an uninoculated medium without test compounds) was used as negative control. Pyocyanin production was estimated by optical density at 520 nm, after bacteria incubated with 5CF3 and 5OF (250 and 500 μg/ml), treated with chloroform, and chloroform layer mixed with HCl. Results 500 µg/ml of 5OF and 5CF3 completely inhibited biofilm formation in 10/10 and 4/10 strains, respectively.250 µg/mlof5OF and 5CF3 strongly inhibited biofilm formation in 7/10 strains, while inhibition with 125 µg/ml of 5OF and 5CF3 was moderate. Lower concentrations had almost no effect on biofilm production. Pyocyanin production was reduced to less than 40% of the control value in 6/9, and less than 50% of the control in 7/9 strains with 500 μg/ml of 5OF and 5CF3, respectively. At 250 µg/ml 5OF and 5CF3 most strains had pyocyanin production above 50% of the control value. Conclusion Synthetized Propafenone derivatives, 5OF and 5CF3, inhibited biofilms and pyocyaninin production of Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical strains. Presented results suggest that propafenone derivatives are potential lead-compounds for synthesis of novel antipseudomonal drugs.

Viability of cells grown with scaffolds was assessed by MTT and LDH assays. No significant cytotoxic effect of any of the tested materials was shown. Staining with alizarin red and estimated alkaline phosphatase activity to identify differentiation, demonstrated osteoblastic phenotype of SHED and newly deposited and mineralized extra cellular matrix (ECM) in presence of all tested scaffolds. The developed ECM seen at scanning electronic micrographs additionally confirmed the osteogenic differentiation and biocompatibility between cells and materials. In summary, all studied biomaterials are suitable carriers for proliferation and osteoblastic differentiation of dental pulp mesenchymal stem cells in vitro.

Design Science Research (DSR) has sparked a renaissance of contributions to IS, but its rigor and... more Design Science Research (DSR) has sparked a renaissance of contributions to IS, but its rigor and value of DSR could be increased by expanding its scope beyond its engineering roots to bring all modes of scientific inquiry to bear-exploratory, theoretical , experimental, and applied science / engineering (AS/E). All DSR Cycle activities can be realized as instances of one or more of the four modes. The rigor of DSR can therefore be defended in terms of the goals, research products, and standards of rigor already established for each mode. There is, moreover, a synergy among the modes that can only be realized when all four are brought to bear, because each informs the other three. To exclude any mode of inquiry from DSR, therefore, is to impoverish knowledge about its objects of inquiry. Based on these insights, we propose a modified Cycles Model for DSR realized under the disciplines of the four modes of scientific inquiry.

Objectives: Industrially produced trans fatty acid (iTFA) have adverse health effects and thus th... more Objectives: Industrially produced trans fatty acid (iTFA) have adverse health effects and thus their consumption should be limited. The aim of this study was to determine and compare the iTFA content in frequently consumed food products by young adults from the Serbian and Slovenian market with supposedly elevated iTFA content in 2015. At the time of this study, there was no recommended limit of iTFA in both countries, and reduction of iTFA in foods was on voluntary basis. Methods: We determined iTFA content in food products, 19 from the Serbian and 22 from the Slovenian market, blinded and analysed in the same analytical run. Contents of fatty acids (FA) methyl esters were analysed by capillary gas chromatography with a flame ionisation detector. Heptadecanoic acid was used as internal standard. Individual FA along with TFA were expressed as percentages of total measured FA. The amount of each FA in the sample was then calculated from the response factor and the transformation factor of the FA from the FA methyl ester content. Results: Elaidic acid (C18:1t) was found as the most abundant TFA in analysed products, ranging from 0.52 g/100 g of total FA in chocolate candy up to 60.4 g/100 g in a salami from Serbian market. In Slovenian products, the values for elaidic acid were lower, 0.04-3.95 g/100 g of total FA, except in one type of wafers (24.3 g/100 g). Conclusions: The majority of analysed products from the Serbian and three from Slovenian market exceeded the recommended WHO and EU limit of 2% iTFA of total fat in foods. Samples of frequently consumed salami, wafers, tea biscuits, and snacks were identified as products with potentially higher burden of iTFA in diets of young adults in Serbia.
