The large populations of FMDV-susceptible species in Vietnam are important components of food production and of the national livelihood. In this study, we investigated the phylogeny of FMDV O/PanAsia in Vietnam, reconstructing the virus' ancestral host species (pig, cattle or buffalo), clinical stage (subclinical carrier or clinically affected) and geographical location. Phylogenetic divergence time estimation and character state reconstruction analyses suggest that movement of viruses between species differ. While inferred transmissions from cattle to buffalo and pigs and from pigs to cattle are well supported, transmission from buffalo to other species, and from pigs to buffalo may be less frequent. Geographical movements of FMDV O/PanAsia virus appears to occur in all directions within the country, with the South Central Coast and the Nor...

Patients with bilateral vocal fold paralysis (BVFP) theoretically have difficulty producing voiceless consonants. However, perceptual studies have revealed clear production of voiceless consonants with good articulation scores in nontracheostomized patients. The purpose of this study was to clarify the production of voiceless stops during articulation in patients with BVFP compared to normal speakers. Methods. The perceptual, acoustic, and aerodynamic characteristics of patients with BVFP and those with normal speech were investigated with special reference to voiceless stop consonants. Test words were prepared to place the stop consonants in different phonological environments, and were all nonsense words. Results. The patients with BVFP perceptually produced the three types of stops successfully. However, they acoustically varied voice onset time to produce phonetically representative stops but decreased voice onset time of /p h / and /p/ compared to those of normal speakers. These patients may properly control air pressure to produce the three types of stop consonants similar to normal speakers. Conclusion. The patients with BVFP realized the distinctions between the three types of stops similar to the normal speakers. Although vocal mobility was absent in the patients with BVFP, voice onset time, vowel duration, closure duration, and air pressure were similar to those of normal speakers.

In the study, 8 subjects were selected for esophagus vocals, and 10 other subjects were selected for a control group. MDVP(Multi-dimensional Voice Program, Model 4800, USA, 2001), Multi Speech(Model 3700, Kaypantax, USA, 2008) were used as experiment equipment. The speech samples selected for evaluation were vowels and sentences (both declarative and interrogative). For acoustic analysis, the intonation form of fo, jitter, energy, shimmer, HNR, and intonation patterns of the speech sample were measured. The results were as follows: First, the natural intrinsic frequency of extended vowels in the esophagus vocal group was lower than the frequency in the normal vocal group. In particular, the intrinsic frequency difference for high vowel /i/ was much greater than the frequency difference for low vowel /a/. Second, the jitter values of the esophagus vocal group were higher than the control group. In particular, there was a large difference between the jitter values for /a/ and /i/, with the jitter values being highest for /i/. Third, there was no significant difference in vocal strength between the esophagus vocal patient group and the control group. Fourth, the shimmer values of the voices in the esophagus vocal group were higher than shimmer values in the control group. In particular, there was a large difference in shimmer values for low vowel /a/. Fifth, the HNR values of the esophagus vocal group were showed significantly lower than the control group. In particular, the largest difference in HNR values between the two groups was for high vowel /i/. Sixth, the pitch contours of interrogative and declarative sentences of the esophagus vocal patient group showed a different form or only had with small differences compared to the pitch contours of the normal vocal group, thus presenting an inconsistent pattern.

One of the most attractive applications of the near-field optics is the next generation optical data storage. The optical memory with high density and high data transfer rate is highly demanded to utilize an array of high throughput nano-scaled light sources for writing and reading bits on a medium. In this paper, we propose a hybrid laser and aperture array for optical near-field memory head, namely VCSEL/NSOM. A systematic investigation of the optical performance of the near-field light at the apertures of the Si micromachined tip array is presented. A primarily result of writing and reading bits on a phase change medium using the fabricated structure is demonstrated

In a computer processor, thermal compound between the processor and the cooling fan becomes a key factor in the thermal dissipation process. Therefore, finding a thermal compound having high thermal conductivity is becoming a major challenge. It is known that carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is one of the most valuable materials with high thermal conductivity (2000 W/m K compared to thermal conductivity of Ag 419 W/m K). This suggested a new approach in applying the CNTs as an essential component to improve the performance of the computer processor and other high power electronic devices. In this paper, we present the simulation and experimental results of thermal dissipation efficiency using the multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) based composites as the thermal dissipation media in the μ-processor of a personal computer. We used simulation approach to study thermal dissipation process in the μ-processor, and the relation between the temperature of the processor and cooling fan, thermal conductivity of thermal paste and working time. A personal computer with configuration: Intel Pentium IV 3.066 GHz, 512 Mb of RAM and Windows XP Service Pack 2 Operating System was employed. The thermal dissipation efficiency of the system was evaluated by directly measuring the temperature of the μ-processor during the operation of the computer. The experimental and simulation results showed that the CNTs based composite could reduce the temperature of the μ-processor more than 3 °C, and the thermal conductivity of the CNTs thermal paste was two times higher than that of the commercial thermal paste.

Accordingly, many developing countries have resorted to capital controls as a mean to curb the volatility of short-term capital movements, while continuing to enjoy the benefits of longer-term capital inflows. However, the effectiveness and the necessity of capital controls have been the subject of a wide controversy. This article attempts to examine the use of capital controls in Chile, Malaysia and Vietnam in order to find conclusive evidence to support the general conclusion that the capital controls used in these countries have been effective in achieving the intended policies' objectives.

The diameters of the CNTs and the thickness of the films were 10-30 nm and 10-30 microns, respectively. LED packages made with VA-CNTs films were tested on an InGaN LED chip. The VA-CNTs film maintained a linear relationship of output light power without reaching saturation for the LED chip of 0.5 W InGaN. The VA-CNTs film greatly increased the input LED current, about more than 500 mA and 350 mA, respectively. A homogeneous distribution of multi-wall MWCNTs in a copper matrix was achieved by a novel processing approach based on the precursor method for synthesis of copper and acid-treated MWCNTs. Dispersion of the CNTs in Cu matrix is important and even determined nanocomposite material properties, such as to enhance the mechanical behavior and wear resistance of the Cu/CNTs. Successful functionalization of the nanotubes with mixture of acid solution may open new applications in composites field. Hardness and wear resistance of fabricated Cu/CNTs nanocomposites increased with increasing the mass fraction of CNTs.

Owing to their very high thermal conductivity, CNTs are one of the most suitable nanoadditives in fabricating the nanofluid with thermal conductivities that are significantly higher than those of the parent liquids even when the CNTs’ concentrations are negligible. This work presents a modified model for predicting the thermal conductivity of carbon nanotube-nanofluids (CNT-nanofluids), which take into consideration the effects of size, volume fraction, and thermal conductivity of CNTs as well as the properties of base liquid. The modified model is found to correctly predict the trends observed in experimental data for different combinations of CNT-nanofluids with varying concentrations.
