Taking seriously the founder’s injunctions to study, edit, and publish the ancient mathematical texts, as well as to teach mathematics, he also enjoyed a long career as a robust and combative mathematical author. In this chapter we consider Wallis’s achievements as a reader, writer, and shaper of mathematics in the early modern world. In the long history of the Savilian professorships at Oxford, John Wallis’s tenure of the Geometry chair is unique.
