Obtaining meaningful baseline measures of children's cardiovascular activity (CVA) has be... more Obtaining meaningful baseline measures of children's cardiovascular activity (CVA) has been difficult because of constraints inherent to laboratory procedures that are used to assess individual differences in response to stress. To circumvent these problems, we performed repeated baseline measures of pulse rate (PR) and blood pressure for 174 children (aged 7-10 yr) in their natural school setting throughout 2 1-week periods. In addition, experimental assessments of cardiovascular reactivity (CVR) were conducted after each baseline period while children participated in a challenging cognitive task. Multivariate analyses of physiological indices revealed three primary styles of cardiovascular functioning. Two of them, characterizing children either with high PR and low blood pressure or conversely with low PR and high blood pressure, have already been described in the research literature. However, analyses also revealed a third group of children (48% of the subjects) who had both low PR and low blood pressure. Findings indicate developmental differences in cardiovascular regulation and highlight the need to consider both variations in baseline CVA as well as in CVR when examining children's physiological adaptation in everyday settings.

The SAS is a self-questionnaire of 60 items divided into 2 dimensions measuring sociotropy and autonomy. The SAS was completed by 1028 students, 140 of whom jointly completed Robins' Personal Style Inventory-Revised, and 75 of whom completed the SAS again 3 months later. The principal-axes factor analysis conducted on all 60 items yielded 2 distinct dimensions: sociotropy and autonomy. The factor analysis of each dimension led us to identify 6 subdimensions, just as in the original instrument. The French translation features satisfying psychometric and conceptual characteristics and allows these dimensions to be studied in a French sample. Results are discussed with regards to adequacy when compared with the original Beck's version.

The SHiPA, developed by Bouisson (2005), contributes to inform on psychological functioning the elderly, using open responses, no limited into choices, and assesses some aspects of distress and adaptative resources in common daily life events that are frequently causes of difficulties. Based on scores in differential weighting of SHiPA dimensions, multivariate analyses revealed five psychological functioning profiles, characterized by anxiety, depression, cognition, internality, satisfaction with life, and routinization levels. Analyse of the differences between SHiPA profiles suggested a first discrimination depending on the individuals, psychological resources level, and the situation of subjects in third and fourth age.

Using the Experience Sampling Method and identical measures across sites, subjects were signaled five times daily for one week to provide reports of negative events, attributions, and depressed moods. Controlling for effects associated with gender and trait anxiety and depression, significant differences emerged between French and American samples concerning the average severity of daily negative events, depressed moods, and causal attributions. However, the relationships between these variables (the fundamental hypothesis of cognitive theory) was largely unaffected by sample source. The results underscore the importance of cultural factors for the experience of specific variables, but provide support for the generalizability of the theory’s tenets across French and American populations.

The first assessed children's perceived psychosocial adjustment, while the second provided parental reports of health histories. Following validation of descriptive scales from each questionnaire, multivariate analyses revealed four health profiles characterized by differential weighting of empirically derived health indices. Measures of social and academic competence derived from teacher reports on children's school adjustment significantly discriminated among the health profiles. Finally, comparisons of age differences in health profiles suggested a three stage developmental model of health risk. Personal trajectories appear to move from normal or adapted functioning, towards attenuation of coping skills and a generalized worried state, next to a more distressed condition where both personal and relational coping is severely compromised, and finally to a fragile condition associated with loss of health, lower social engagement and lack of robustness.

Using the Experience Sampling Method and identical measures across sites, subjects were signaled five times daily by electronic devices to provide in vivo reports of negative events, attributions, and depressed moods. After controlling for effects associating clinical and demographic variables, and despite differences attributable to national origin, attributional style emerged as a highly significant predictor of the numerous specific attributions made to negative events within the course of daily life. However, consistent with the cognitive mediation hypothesis, attributional style did not directly explain depression levels. The results are discussed in terms of the predictive power of cognitive and personality assessments in understanding the day-to-day experience of depression.

They were determined by densitometric analysis of slot blots and the mean values (n = 4) at a defined age of pregnancy were compared with those observed in nonpregnant control rats (NP group). No significant variations of c-fos level were observed in the liver and brain of pregnant rats. In the uterus, the c-fos level decreased, reached a minimum on day 6 (4-fold decrease compared with the NP group), and then increased. The c-fos level significantly increased in the kidney (2- and 2.5-fold on days 6 and 7), and in the lung (2.5-fold on day 7).

Journal of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics, 1999

Biochemistry and Cell Biology, 1992

The c-fos and c-myc mRNA levels were investigated in the uterus and nonreproductive organs of rat... more The c-fos and c-myc mRNA levels were investigated in the uterus and nonreproductive organs of rats during the implantation period (from day 5 to 7 of pregnancy). The c-myc level did not significantly vary in the uterus, liver, and lung. It significantly increased in the kidney (3-fold on day 7) and in the brain (4.1-, 3.8-, and 6-fold, on days 5, 6, and 7). The changes in c-fos and (or) c-myc gene expression in the uterus and nonreproductive o...
