Research paper thumbnail of Effect of Swelling and Shrinkage of Compacted Expansive Clay on Shallow Foundation

This paper presents swell and shrink behavior of expansive clay found in Suranaree district Muang... more This paper presents swell and shrink behavior of expansive clay found in Suranaree district Muang Nakornratchasima. The swelling clay was found interspersed with dispersive clay. The clay mineral in swelling clay is calcium montmorillonite. Major constituent in dispersive clay is quartz. In this study, the swelling clay is mixed with dispersive clay to simulate contamination effects before using as earth structures. The swelling test and the shrinkage test of compacted specimens show that the swelling and shrinkage increase as the plasticity index increased. The maximum dry density of the specimen decrease as the plasticity index increased. The estimation of the soil settlement due to shrinkage shows that the shrinkage settlement is quite high which may have some effect on shallow foundation.

Research paper thumbnail of Determination of failure mechanism of very soft clay behind L-pile wall with physical model tests

Japanese Geotechnical Society Special Publication, 2016

This paper presents the determination of flow failure mechanism of very soft marine clay behind c... more This paper presents the determination of flow failure mechanism of very soft marine clay behind contiguous L-pile, (LP) wall with physical model tests. The pile with L-shape is model by applying pressure on pile-soil reduced scaled tests. The plane strain type is considered. One side of the model is transparent to observed movement of the soil and failure pattern during the test. The undisturbed very soft clay sample is collected, prepared, and tested near the site to obtain high quality undisturbed samples. The results indicated that the normalized ultimate pressure with undrained shear strength, / h u P S reduces as the gap width increase. The relationship between / h u P S and normalized gap width, / g s B is proposed. The arch failure mechanism is observed from the recorded photographs. The ultimate resistances of LP are lower than the circular pile due to span length of arch over the open gap.

In the research, calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide and calcium carbonate are selected to mix with expansive soil. The soil samples are prepared by mix low-expansive clay with high expansive clay at five ratios i.e. 0:100, 25:75, 50:50, 75:25, 100:0. Amount of additive varies at 1, 3, 5 percent by weight. The mixed samples are tests to determined index properties. The samples are let to dry at ambient environment. The shrinkage and water content are monitored during the test. The results show that calcium oxide and calcium hydroxide can reduce plasticity index significantly. However, calcium oxide can not reduce plasticity index. After treated sample with calcium oxide or calcium hydroxide, soil texture is coarser than non-treated sample. In this research, the relationship between amount of lime and shrinkage and the relationship betwe...

Research paper thumbnail of Soil-cement column wall with wall-strut to minimize ground movement for a road tunnel construction in Bangkok subsoils

The tunnel wall is very close to the existing hotel which requires quiet environment during construction. The ground movements must also limit as the excavation is close to the existing hotel. This paper present design and construction of a soil-cement column (SCC) wall for using as retaining wall during excavation. The SCC wall-struts are used instead of conventional bracing to minimize ground movement. The lateral ground movements behind SCC wall are comparable to diaphragm wall with bracing. The performance of SCC wall-strut used in this project is evaluated by comparing with a case history data.

Diaphragm walls have been commonly used as permanent retaining walls for excavation works in various projects. Comprehensive monitoring system is of essential for any excavation works particularly for those adjacent to the sensitive buildings. This paper presents the monitoring of diaphragm wall displacement and associated movement of the ground and adjacent structures including historical building using a number of instruments for basement construction works located at the bank of Chao Phraya River. The bracing system and construction sequence adopted for excavation with the consideration of the presence of an unbalanced loading condition are also briefly discussed. Building damage risk assessment using a simple approach was carried out based on the instrumentation results and compared with the damage criteria established by published research work. A c...

Research paper thumbnail of Performance of soil-cement column retaining wall used with top- down construction method for basement construction in Bangkok subsoil

The performance of soil-cement column (SCC) retaining wall system with top-down construction meth... more The performance of soil-cement column (SCC) retaining wall system with top-down construction method was observed and present in this paper. From the observation data, the 3D finite element model is used for back calculation to obtain appropriate stiffness parameter for ground movement prediction during SCC installation stage and during excavation stage. The suitable stiffness parameter for prediction of ground move-ment for soft clay is 50 u S and 500 u S at the SCC installation stage and at excavation stage respectively. The influence of stiffness on lateral force is also reported.

Research paper thumbnail of Behavior of soil-cement column wall with top-down support system for unbalanced deep excavation in soft clay

This paper presents the research results on the behavior of soil-cement column wall used for base... more This paper presents the research results on the behavior of soil-cement column wall used for basement construction in Bangkok subsoil due to limitation of setback space. Thus the wall cannot be design as a free standing wall. Therefore, the designer uses thinner wall supported with permanent slab. The top-down construction method is adopted. The load of the slab is transferred to bored pile via temporary steel section. The opening in the slab must be provided for muck removal and access for worker and construction materials. The opening causes discontinuity in slab; therefore, temporary strut must be used to transfer horizontal load from one side to another side. The different of the basement causes unbalance earth pressure. Therefore, the appropriate construction sequence must be planned. The results show that the soil-cement column wall reduces effect of unbalanced pressure significantly. The measured strut forces smaller than the calculated ones. Strut forces increase as the temp...

Research paper thumbnail of Soil-Cement Wall without Bracing for Mat Foundation construction in Bangkok Sub-Soils

Construction of large mat foundations for a monumental building project in Bangkok sub-soils need... more Construction of large mat foundations for a monumental building project in Bangkok sub-soils need to excavate for the depth of 5.7m. Because of the limited area of the site and relatively low shear strength of Bangkok soft clay, the earth retaining structure is needed to prevent failure of the soil around the mat foundation during the excavation. The selected retaining structure and supporting system must be stiff enough to prevent large soil movement which may cause damage to the unrestraint pile. The common practice in Bangkok area for earth retaining structure is steel sheet pile wall or cast in-situ reinforced concrete wall with steel temporary bracing. For this project, because the cost and time are limited; therefore, the soil-cement wall, SCW, without temporary bracing is used as a retaining structure instead of the conventional wall-bracing method. Due to limitation of well documented experience of the SCW construction in Bangkok sub-soils, the behavior of the wall is carefu...

The reduced scale physical models are used with high quality undisturbed soil. The undisturbed soil samples are collected from an open cut for basement construction in Bangkok. The geometry ratios sg of 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 1.2, 1.6, 2.0, and /d 2.5 are used. The plastic beads are placed on the sample to monitor soil movement during the test. Loads are applied to the model until fail. The photographs are taken during the test to observed failure plane on the sample. The resistance, in term of / h uP s , reduces as the /gs d increases. The shear pattern observed indicated that arching are form to resist the applied load. The observed failure mechanism is used to develop a closed form equation. The ultimate earth pressure calculated from the proposed equation agree well with the one from test resuts.

Due to the site condition, unbalanced lateral loading on the wall was expected and an excavation down to -12.7m below the existing ground level was carried out with instrumentation, consisting of (8) inclinometer tubes installed in the wall panels, settlement plates around excavation zone and tiltmeters and beam sensors on the existing structures. This paper presents computer model analysis and performance of the wall including results of instrumentation. Behaviour and performance of the wall is compared with those of other projects in Bangkok area.
