Its epicentre has been the United States (US)—the centre not the periphery in neo-Marxian terminology. The debate over whether it is a crisis of the capitalist system itself1 or a regulatory crisis of the capitalist system2 remains germane for time to come. But the reality is that the financial crisis and its upshot, namely a huge financial meltdown and a string of bankruptcies, have already spilled from the financial sector to the real economy.3

The threat of secular stagnation and prolonged crisis in today’s global economic system are adding complexities to these economies. It is evidently clear that even after many years of the global financial crisis countries are confroned with both cyclical and structural predicaments, emanating from, among others, declining trade flows, stagnating investment, diminishing productivity growth and above all aggravating unemployment and underemployment (UNDESA 2016). Such a phenomenon by raising questions on the efficacy of neo-liberal policy regimes indicate the need for devolving alternatives for overcoming from such deepening problems (Ocampo 2011; Korz 2015; Khanal 2017). Grounded on empirical evidence, recent literature emphasizes on the need of reviving, among others, the manufacturing sector for revitalizing the real sector to generate productive employment, key toward inclusiv...

The unsustainable modes of production and consumption still fuel the growth in South Asia and carbon emissions are perpetually rising. This environmentally hazardous growth model could be transmuted, inter alia, through extensive trade in Environmental Goods and Services (EGS). By mitigating environmental pollution, enhancing energy efficiency, augmenting the use of renewable energy, and promoting environmental industries and creating green jobs, substantial trade of EGS can reduce environmental degradation as well as promote growth. Thus, the paper complements the preceding analysis on the state of Green Growth by an in-depth analysis of this potential enabler of green growth, with a...

The negotiation process was demanding, yet it succeeded in securing a relatively wellbalanced accession package. The purpose of this paper is to describe the contours of the negotiation process and to share lessons learned. The paper details the onerous process involved in the accession of LDCs to the WTO and describes the context of Nepal’s negotiating positions. Some distinctive aspects of Nepal’s approach to the process of accession are highlighted and compared with the situation of some other LDCs.
