The seeding signal reduces losses through amplified spontaneous emission and supplies energy for L-band amplification in the underpumped region. Gain improvement is observed for a copumped configuration, where the L-band and seeding signal are colaunched together with minimal

The reflected ASE acts as an additional signal to limit the population inversion and clamps the amplifier's gain. The gain of the proposed amplifier is clamped at 26.5 dB with dynamic input signal power up to -14 dBm and gain variation of less than 0.1 dB. The corresponding noise figure is less than 6.9 dB. The absence of any oscillating laser in this technique is advantageous since it can avoid relaxation oscillation effect. http://www.degruyter.com/view/j/joc.2008.29.1/joc.2008.29.1.2/joc.2008.29.1.2.xml "

The systems operate above the laser oscillation threshold, and exhibit the gain-clamping effect. The experimental results show that the unidirectional system has a higher gain and a lower noise figure than the bidirectional system. At high input

Double-pass short-wavelength band erbium-doped fiber amplifier (S-band EDFA) with enhanced gain a... more Double-pass short-wavelength band erbium-doped fiber amplifier (S-band EDFA) with enhanced gain and noise figure characteristics is demonstrated. It uses a broadband fiber Bragg grating (FBG) operating in conventional-band (C-band) region to reduce the C-band amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) in the amplifier system and thus increases the population inversion in the S-band region. The small signal gain is increased by about 2.7 dB for 1500 nm signal at pump power of 103 mW, compared with that of the conventional double-pass amplifier without the FBG. The corresponding noise figure is also improved by 0.5 dB.

A dual-stage amplifier was employed where, the first stage provides simultaneous bi-directional amplification of conventionaland long-band signals. The utilization of unused amplified spontaneous emission and remnant pump power from the first stage enables realization of high gain for the long-band signals in the second stage. Amplification of wavelength division multiplexing systems (2 and 4 channels) was successfully demonstrated with an average gain of 22 dB and a noise figure less than 7 dB.

Knowledge of these parameters will enable a better design of EDFAs for operation as a power amplifier. In this saturated regime, gain saturation is defined as the gain at 3 dB gain compression from the unsaturated gain for a specific fibre length and pump power. Therefore, the output saturation power, Posat, and input saturation signal power, Pisat, are defined as the output power and input signal power at which gain saturation occurs. The effects of pump power and fibre length were also studied in this this paper

We characterised cascaded optical amplifiers by comparing their performance while operating with and without an interstage optical filter. It is noticeable that the 3 nm filter improved the gain (G) and output signal power (Psout) by as much as 9.72 dB and 9.75 dB respectively at a signal level of -50 dBm
