An experimental model was created including 30 virgin female Wistar rats. After weight determination, animals were separated into two groups: the ligation group with 20 animals, submitted to laparotomy and ligation of the ovarian branches of the uterine blood vessels, and the control group with 10 animals submitted only to laparotomy. Sixteen weeks later the rats were weighed and euthanized, and their uteri dissected and weighed. The index between animal and uteri weights was calculated. Statistical significance was not observed when the mean uterus weights and the indexes between weight of the uterus and weight of the animals were compared in the two groups. The blockage of ovary vascularization from ovary branches of the uterine vessel did not cause uterine weight alterations.

Here we evaluate in vitro and in vivo titanium implant surfaces modified with calcium ions (Ca(2+) surfaces). Calcium ions produce a durable chemical and nano-topographical modification of the titanium oxide interface. Time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry examination of the outermost surface composition, shows that calcium ions in Ca(2+) surfaces effectively prevent adventitious hydrocarbon passivation of the oxide layer. In aqueous solutions Ca(2+) surfaces release within the first minute, 2/3 of the total measured Ca(2+), the rest is released over the following 85 days. Additionally, Ca(2+) surfaces significantly increase human fetal osteoblasts-like cell adhesion, proliferation and differentiation, as measured by the autocrine synthesis of osteopontin. Relevant for clinical application, after 12 weeks of healing in sheep tibia, microcomputer tomography and histomorphometric analysis show that Ca(2+) surfaces develop significantly more bone contacts and higher bone density in the 1mm region around the implant. Consequently, titanium implants modified with calcium ions represent a valuable tool to improve endosseous integration in the clinical practice.

This study was aimed at exploring the angiogenic and myogenic effects of PRGF on in vitro endothelial cells (HUVEC) and skeletal myoblasts (hSkMb) as well as on in vivo mouse subcutaneously implanted matrigel and on limb muscles after a severe ischemia. Human PRGF was prepared and characterized. Both proliferative and anti-apoptotic responses to PRGF were assessed in vitro in HUVEC and hSkMb. In vivo murine matrigel plug assay was conducted to determine the angiogenic capacity of PRGF, whereas in vivo ischemic hind limb model was carried out to demonstrate PRGF-driven vascular and myogenic regeneration. Primary HUVEC and hSkMb incubated with PRGF showed a dose dependent proliferative and anti-apoptotic effect and the PRGF matrigel plugs triggered an early and significant sustained angiogenesis compared with the control group. Moreover, mice treated with PRGF intramuscular infiltrations displayed a substantial reperfusion enhancement at day 28 associated with a fibrotic tissue reduction. These findings suggest that PRGF-induced angiogenesis is functionally effective at expanding the perfusion capacity of the new vasculature and attenuating the endogenous tissue fibrosis after a severe-induced skeletal muscle ischemia.

Endogenous growth factors and fibrin scaffolds can be used to support MSC expansion and transplantation. Cell growth on a fibrin scaffold mimics the 3D environment of tissue and facilitates handling and subsequent transplantation. This approach is presented as an essential toolbox in the substitution of fetal bovine serum in all large-scale ex vivo processes, providing quick and safe expansion of MSCs. This paper reviews the state of the art of platelet-rich plasma technology applied to clinical use of stem cells, focusing on current technology and methods, new challenges, and controversies.

For the other energy values (again excluding some very specific ones) the Bernoulli Dirac system is localized, independently of the mass.

The aim of this study was to investigate if protection offered by helmets differs according to helmet type. In this retrospective cohort study, outpatient records of motorcyclists were analyzed for the Facial Injury Severity Scale (FISS), traumatic brain injury (TBI), facial fractures, and helmet use. Statistical analysis was conducted using the Fisher and Bonferroni tests, bivariate regression analysis, and 1-way analysis of variance. There were 253 motorcyclists who sustained craniomaxillofacial injuries and were referred for outpatient treatment (men, 88.9%; mean age, 29.64 ± 11.6 yr); 60.1% had up to 9 years of formal education; 156 patients reported not using crash helmets, 51 were using open-face helmets, and 46 were using full-face helmets. The mean FISS score was significantly higher for unhelmeted riders compared with full-face helmet riders (P = .047), with no difference between unhelmeted riders and open-face helmet users (P = 1.00). Results for TBI were statistically greater for those wearing open-face helmets compared with full-face helmets (P = .035). In this study, a large percentage of motorcyclists had facial fractures and TBI, and crash helmets did not always offer adequate protection against craniomaxillofacial injury, especially open-face helmets. Thus, further investigation into helmet types and quality of protection offered is recommended.

For random Bernoulli potentials taking two values (without correlations), for typical realizations and for all values of the mass, it is shown that its spectrum is pure point, whereas the zero mass case presents dynamical delocalization for specific values of the energy. The massive case presents dynamical localization (excluding some particular values of the energy). Finally, for general potentials the dynamical moments for distinct masses are compared, especially the massless and massive Bernoulli cases.

A case of bilateral temporalis muscle hypertrophy, with masseter and pterygoid involvement, in a 26-year-old white woman in the fourth month of gestation is reported. Magnetic resonance imaging and physical examination were used for diagnosis. Hypertrophy was considered to be of acquired nature. The patient was managed using alternative, noninvasive methods. After 2 months, visible reduction was observed. Clinical symptoms of muscle discomfort were also reported. In the presented case, we were able to use an alternative, noninvasive form of treatment, which provided our patient with an overall improvement in physical and psychologic aspects.
