Research and Practice in Technology Enhanced Learning
Students’ participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is still one ... more Students’ participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is still one of the most critical worldwide educational challenges despite efforts to promote STEM. Debates about gender disparities in STEM careers also remain perpetual. Early documented literature suggested shifts in students’ STEM choices were due to students’ significant others, media exposure and attitude. Therefore, the first aim of this paper was to examine the direct and indirect relationships in a proposed model, and analyze the mediating roles of media exposure and students’ attitude in the relationship between subjective norms and STEM career choice intention. The second aim was to analyze the moderating role of students’ gender. Respondents of this study were 806 secondary school students in Malaysia. Based on the results from partial least squares structural equation modeling, (i) subjective norms had both direct and indirect influence on students’ career choice intention in STEM, (ii) ...

The focus of this study was to investigate the factors that influence the use of laptops in the teaching and learning among the secondary school Mathematics and Science teachers. The predictor factors were laptop competence, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, attitude towards laptop use, administrator’s support, and technical support. This study was based on a quantitative descriptive research using a set of questionnaire. The validity of the instrument was established through a panel of experts. Pilot test was carried out among 38 teachers and the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient value was found to range from .731 to .978. The respondents of this investigation were secondary school Mathematics and Science teachers from the Central Region of Malaysia. The total sample of Mathematics and Science teachers was 473. This paper investigated the role played by psychological ownership in shaping teachers' beliefs about using a cloud-based virtual learning environment (VLE). Psychological ownership is increasingly becoming a relevant phenomenon in technology adoption research, where people can feel psychologically attached to a particular technology. The study proposed that such phenomenon can also occur when using a VLE, and a hypothesised model with six constructs was tested with 629 Malaysian teachers from 21 schools. Results from structural equation modelling-partial least squares analysis found teachers' experiences with the VLE significantly influenced psychological ownership, which in turn significantly predicted perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use of the VLE. Overall, the model possesses predictive relevance for the outcome predictors as indicated by Stone-Geisser's Q 2 , and accounted for 61.6% of variance in perceived usefulness and 62.0% of variance in perceived ease of use. This study provides insights into the motivation behind teachers' beliefs which are shaped by their experiences with the VLE. Implications for theory and practice were discussed based on the insights of the study.

The widespread introduction of Information Technology and the Internet is reshaping the landscape... more The widespread introduction of Information Technology and the Internet is reshaping the landscape of the learning environment, namely online education. It is important to note that, to achieve a successful online education, it is important to understand the determinants of online learning among students. Therefore, this research study aims to explore the factors that can influence students' behavioral intention to use an online learning portal. In view of that, a comprehensive search of the literature was carried out. The literature review reveals that gender, students' attitude, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, motivation and social interaction influence an individual's intention to use an online learning portal. Indeed, online learning has changed the learning culture forever

The laptop provides a unique feature which allows the integration of ICT into the education at anytime and anywhere. Based on the review of literature, teachers' attitude is seen as one of the significant indicators in influencing teacher's laptop utilisation. The objectives of this study were to explore the teachers' levels of laptop utilisation in terms of teaching and learning processes (TLP), lesson preparation and planning (LPP); teachers' level of attitude towards laptop usage; and also to examine the relationship between teachers' attitude towards laptop usage and laptop utilisation. Survey questionnaires were administered to 38 secondary school Mathematics and Science teachers. The results reported that the teachers' laptop utilisation was at the moderate leve...

The LMS has shaped new ways of transferring information between moderators and learners. However, evidence suggests that the gap between actual and desired performance still exists among learners. Therefore, there is a need to probe the role of the moderator in improving the academic and technologyrelated performance of students. Three experienced LMS moderators were interviewed for this purpose. Fourteen categories were drawn from the interviews and were categorized into six themes. An additional factor labelled "publicise the usefulness" emerged from the study. The results draw parallels with the five factors of cause analysis in the Human Performance Technology (HPT) model.

They were granted personal laptops by the Ministry of Education through the Teaching and Learning of Science and Mathematics in English, or known as Pengajaran dan Pembelajaran Sains dan Matematik dalam Bahasa Inggeris (PPSMI) programme. This document has no comments. PPSMI was aimed at enhancing the teaching of these subjects in English with the aid of technology. The research adopted a case study qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews. Three in-depth interviews were audio recorded in the teachers ’ schools, transcribed and analysed. Several themes related to the benefits and challenges of owning and using laptops emerged from these interviews. This paper, therefore, also seeks to discuss these themes in detail.

Participants were practising teachers in primary (n = 326) and secondary (n = 302) schools located in a school district in Malaysia. A self-reporting questionnaire was used, where the Job Descriptive Index, Job In General, and Cynicism About Organisational Change scales were adopted and adapted. Overall, teachers reported being moderately cynical toward education transformation efforts. The study found that cynicism toward educational change partially but significantly mediated the effects of work factors (the work itself, advancement, pay, supervision, colleagues) on job satisfaction. Findings also suggested negative consequences of cynical outlook on teachers' job satisfaction, as shown by the inverse relationship found between these variables. This study contributes to the literature on cynicism toward change in an education context, and its significant effect on teacher job satisfaction.

The current study was conducted on students in a private university, aged between 19 and 24 years. The objective was to determine the level of awareness of cybersafety issues and their ability to safeguard themselves against risks. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods were used. A survey questionnaire was used to determine their awareness and understanding of cyber-safety issues and the ability to safeguard against risks. Focus group interview was used to examine students' perceptions and experiences of risky online activities. The findings show: (i) students feel somewhat safe when they were on the internet. (ii) They have a good understanding of what constitutes risky online activities. (iii) The students also

Form Four students were given the opportunity to choose the STEM subjects before their enrolment in the STEM stream. According to the Malaysian Ministry of Education, this initiative prioritises students’ interests to promote STEM involvement among the younger generation and to reinstate STEM components in the curriculum. This study aimed to investigate the influence of teachers, parents and friends on STEM interest and career choice intention among secondary school students in Malaysia. A total of 230 Form Four students from the central region of Peninsular Malaysia participated in a self-report survey. Data were analysed using structural equation modelling. The results showed that parents had a significant influence on both students’ STEM interest and career choice intention, whereas teachers did not.
