Ultrasound is well established in abdomino-thoracic evaluation of patients with dengue infection. The aim of this study was to explore the role of ultrasound in predicting occurrence of severe infection in dengue patients and in predicting deterioration in patients with nonsevere dengue. Methods The serologically proven dengue patients who reported to hospital during the study period were divided into three categories based on the dengue infection severity score. Ultrasound findings of abdomen and chest in these patients were noted in the initial, as well as follow-up scans and inferences drawn. Results 61% belonged to the category of Dengue Fever, 35% were in Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever category, and 4% had Dengue Shock Syndrome. Positive ultrasound findings were seen to be significantly higher in patients with severe dengue. Logistic regression analysis revealed the presence of pericholecystic fluid to be significantly associated with the severe disease, while the presence of gall bladder wall edema, ascites, and any ultrasound finding were significantly associated with the disease progression. The odds of a patient with severe dengue having gall bladder wall edema, ascites, or any ultrasound finding were 2.74, 2.04, and 2.619 times, respectively. Conclusion Our study indicates that positive findings on ultrasound are significantly higher in severe dengue and also that ultrasound can be reliably used to identify the patients with nonsevere dengue who are likely to progress to severe dengue.

B. coagulans IS2 was cultured on tryptic soy broth and incubated for 24 h at 37°C. Then, bacteria were sub-cultured on Man, Rogosa, Sharpe (MRS) broth. Produced bacteriocin was extracted from the MRS culture of B. coagulans IS2 by 70% ammonium sulphate. Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica, and Listeria monocytogenes were cultured on Mueller Hinton Agar. Then, two separate 6 mm wells were created and filled with 200 µL of extracted bacteriocin. Presence of growth inhibition zones around wells weas considered as antimicrobial effect. The molecular weight of the bacteriocin was assessed by the Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). The SDS-PAGE analysis showed presence of low molecular weight protein (<10 KD) in the gel which confirm the presence of bacteriocin-type protein. Clear growth inhibition zones were occurred around the wells contained bacteriocin for all E. coli, S. enterica, and L. monocytogenes bacteria which can directly confirmed the antimicrobial effects of bacteriocin produced by B. coagulans IS2 toward E. coli, S. enterica, and L. monocytogenes. However, it is an introductory work but our findings show an extracted bacteriocin had antimicrobial effects toward both Gram-negative (E. coli and S. enterica) and Gram-positive (L. monocytogenes) bacteria. Nevertheless, additional investigates should perform to found more information about the antimicrobial effects of bacteriocin produced by the B. coagulans IS2.

This study was conducted to study the prevalence and clinico-hematological profile of MA. Methods This was a cross-sectional study done on 1150 adult anemic patients. All patients diagnosed to have MA were studied for clinico-hematological and etiological profile. Nerve conduction studies (NCS) were done in all. Results MA was present in 3.6% cases of anemia. Severe anemia was seen in 9.7% of anemic patients and 75% of MA cases (p < 0.05). Forty five percent of MA patients presented with pancytopenia. Vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency were documented in 40% and 25% cases respectively while combined deficiency was noted in 35% of all MA cases. There was no co-relation between severity of anemia and deficiency of either of the vitamins (Fischer exact test: 0.530). Among MA patients, 35% were vegetarians while 65% consumed mixed diet. There was no association between vegetarian diet and Vit B12 deficiency (p = 0.3137). An additional etiology was more commonly found in patients on mixed diet [92%; 24/26] as compared to those on vegetarian diet [50%; 7/14] (p = 0.04). NCS was abnormal in 14 patients (35%). Overt clinical neuropathy was present in 12 cases of MA, while subclinical neuropathy was seen in 2 cases. Conclusion MA is one of common causes of pancytopenia and severe anemia. Diet plays an important role in causation of MA in vegetarians. An alternative etiology is however, more likely to be found in patients on mixed diet. While overt neurological abnormalities are common in MA, subclinical neuropathy is uncommon.

Methodology: Sixty adult patients coming for the emergency surgeries during COVID-19 pandemic were divided equally by consecutive sampling into either Group 1 (DL) or Group 2 (VL). General anesthesia was administered with aerosol box covering the head and trunk of the patient. The laryngoscopy was attempted based on the group allocation with either VL or DL through aerosol box. Following observations were noted, total intubation time, number of attempts, Cormack–Lehane (CL) view, intubation difficulty scale (IDS), use of airway adjuncts, and external laryngeal maneuver. Results: Mean (standard deviation) time taken to intubate was 25.36 (6.22) sec in DL group and 21.9 (5.56) sec in VL group. Median IDS scoring was 1 in DL group and 0 in VL group indicating toward ease of intubation with the videolaryngoscope. Improved glottic view (CL Grade 1) was attained commonly with VL group and higher CL grades (2b) were common with DL group (23.3%). No intubation aids were required in VL group although 30% in DL required bougie for the intubation. External laryngeal maneuver was applied in 40% subjects undergoing DL with no maneuvers needed in VL group. First pass success of intubation was comparable in both the groups. Conclusion: Intubating conditions are favorable with VL when aerosol box is included which requires acquisition of the skills depending on its availability. However, the intubation should be attempted with the technique the clinician has the expertise during this pandemic.

Problem is compounded by the fact that most of tobacco users indulge in tobacco from adolescence. More than one-fourth of young men in India consume tobacco. The National Health Policy 2017 aims to reduce the prevalence of tobacco usage by 15% by 2020. To achieve this goal, the youth must be targeted to abstain from tobacco. Aim: To study the correlates of the knowledge and consumption of tobacco in adolescent males. Settings and Design: This was a cross-sectional study in a school in an urban slum in Western Maharashtra. Methodology: The study was conducted in a school in an urban slum on 394 adolescent males using pretested self-administered questionnaire. All the participants gave assent. Ethical permission from the institutional ethics committee was taken. Statistical Analysis Used: Percentages and Pearson's Chi-square test were done using SPSS 20. Results: The proportion of adolescents having knowledge about hazards of tobacco was 65.2%, while the prevalence of tobacco use was 24.4%. Tobacco usage was found to be significantly associated with the usage in family; paradoxically, the adolescents who witness tobacco use at home were more likely to have knowledge about hazards of tobacco. Knowledge about harms of tobacco use was found to be significantly associated with educational status of mother. Conclusion: Important correlates of knowledge about hazards of tobacco usage were the type of family, maternal education, as well as usage of tobacco in family.

B. coagulans IS2 was cultured on tryptic soy broth and incubated for 24 h at 37°C.

The present study is a cross-sectional multicentric study where data from 10 different stations by 16 different medical establishments were collected. Objective: The present study was conducted to determine the prevalence of anemia in female spouses of army personnel in an Armys Corps zone. Materials and Methods: The total size of the sample was 14,273 which covered female spouses of army personnel of five different formations under an Armys Corps zone. All the non-pregnant female spouses of army personnel were screened for anemia using hemoglobin level estimation. Uniform instructions for screening were given from the medical branch of Armys Corps Headquarters to medical units. Results: The prevalence of anemia found in this study was 21.54% which is much below the national prevalence of 55% as per National Family Health Survey-3 data. Conclusions: Our study with a large sample size demonstrates that the prevalence of anemia in female spouses of army personnel is almost half of national prevalence. This is indeed a landmark achievement of the Army Medical Corps where success was achieved in reducing the burden of anemia.
