That insula is located between the Roman houses no. 1 and 2 and the city forum. Its excavation has provided the discovery of a public bath, which occupied the northern part of the insula, while the southern half was occupied by commercial premises.
Area 19 is a commercial premise excavated to the natural rock and shows a sequence dated from the building of a military camp structure on the hill to the abandonment of the city. When the Roman city was founded, this space was occupied by an atrium’s house and a dolium was placed in a service area for domestic purposes. However, the abandonment of the domus did not mean the end of the dolium’s usefulness, since it was reused in later phases, such as in the great reform dated to the Augustan period. At the time, it might have been used like a fullonica, until it was amortized in the Flavian period, based on a small pottery assemblage found inside.

It was built on top of the former villa courtyard, once it had already lost its residential functions. It was made up of a minimum of fifty-four buried dolia (dolia defossa) arranged in rows, twelve of which still preserved their bases.
In this paper, we try to reconstruct the profile of the containers and determine their typology. We also analyse the graffiti made on the dolia walls, calculate their carrying capacity and identify the different types of repairs made. Finally, based on the data obtained, an interpretation is
drawn up to contextualize the cella uinaria within the archaeological sequence of the site.

The creation of a thermal complex, in the northern part of the ínsula, and a set of shops and commercial premises, in the southern part, required great adaptation work to adapt the space left by the abandonment of a domus from the founding period to the new needs of the sector. In the Augustal period, a period during which Empúries still shows signs of vitality, there was a desire to adapt and integrate this ínsula again into urban reality as an active and functioning space, given the position it occupied in the city center.

These structures, however, are not the first to be built on this site. Previously, the foundation of the city in the first quarter of the first century BC led to the construction of the first Roman houses. One of these, located on the lower levels of insula 30, suffered a fire that originated in the kitchen and destroyed several working rooms of the house, among them there was a cellar where wine of Italic origin was kept. The demolition buried the entire content of this dependency, becoming an exceptional document that allows us to know the arrangement of the elements in the space, the volume that had been stored with amphorae of the Dressel 1 type and all the elements that were part of it.

BC, and Cap del Vol and Els Ullastres dated to change of Era. While Ullastres I is known from the work performed by F. Foerster in the 1970s, the rest were excavated by the Underwater Archaeology Centre of Catalonia (CASC) using scientific methodology. They are evidence of wine maritime trade between the production areas northeast of the Iberian Peninsula and the port of destination in south France, probably Narbonne. The evaluation of the shapes and capacities of the amphorae was useful to determine specific formal characteristics and to establish a chronological evolution of the Pascual 1 type. The archaeometric analysis has been performed to evaluate the compositional homogeneity or variability of the cargoes and to identify their origin, which should be related to the ports of departure of the ships. These data and the study of the epigraphic stamps reveal different dynamics in the organisation of the Conventus Tarraconensis wine trade between 40 BC and the change of Era.

Thanks to the parallels provided by a recent book by Yolanda Peña, we have been able to associate this piece with the receptacle that collected the result of the press in a calcatorium of the villa. A determining element is the decoration, in the form of a lion’s head, which decorated the outlet spout.

Madrider Mitteilungen, 63, 2022

Between 2019 and 2021, the Madrid Department of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI Madrid) ... more Between 2019 and 2021, the Madrid Department of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI Madrid) and the Empúries branch of the Museu d’Arqueologia de Catalunya (MAC Empúries) carried out a diachronic and multidisciplinary research project in Empúries (l’Escala, Girona) and its surroundings. The work is part of a cooperation agreement between these two institutions, which since 2020 has been receiving a particular impulse from the DAI project »Groundcheck – Cultural Heritage
and Climate Change«. The research is still ongoing; this article offers a first account of the results and insights gained so far. We would like to highlight the data about Emporion, particulary the first Greek settlement in the vicinity of the beach for which it was possible to determine phases and subphases beginning in the third quarter of the 6th century BC as well as the nearly complete ground plan of a Greek house from the third quarter of the 6th century BC. Geophysical-bathymetric tests identified rock formations, which once served to protect the buildings on the coast against the open sea. Geological and geographical studies, together with earlier geo-archaeological research, enabled us to reconstruct the palaeolandscape of the region from the Neolithic onwards and to visualise scenarios from the most important historic-cultural phases of the last 7500 years by means of an interactive 3D model; taking the 2021 calculations of the IPPC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) into account, it was also possible to make a prognosis about future floodings as a result of the rising sea level and the increasing number of storm surges.

Archaeological excavations carried out in recent years at the site of Santa Margarida (L’Escala) ... more Archaeological excavations carried out in recent years at the site of Santa Margarida (L’Escala) are part of the current research project promoted by the Empúries section of the Museu d’Arqueologia de Catalunya, which aims to study the ancient port areas of the Greek city of Emporion and
the Roman city of Emporiae. The results of these works provide new arguments about the location of the Late Antique episcopal complex of Empúries in this area, as well as evidence relating to some of the buildings that made it up, such as the baptistery and the basilica or funerary church. A new settlement developed around this episcopal complex that, according to recent paleolandscape studies, was located next to the estuary of the river Ter, which then flowed immediately to the North of Sant Martí d’Empúries, the other main nucleus in this historical period.

Over the course of it history, Empúries has always been a unique city. Its peculiarity is especia... more Over the course of it history, Empúries has always been a unique city. Its peculiarity is especially evident, in that it is the only case in the Iberian Peninsula where there was a Greek city on the site before the Roman one. This was, without a doubt, a determining factor, in the same way as were
all the political and military actions related to Empúries from the Second Punic War onwards.
M. Porci Cato’s campaign, at the beginning of the 2nd century BC, against a coalition of Iberian peoples and the creation, shortly afterwards, of a fortified military installation next to the ancient Greek nucleus, were the main events prior to the new urban foundation in the upper part of the
Emporitan hill, which occurred in the first quarter of the 1st century BC.
The dense Emporitan historiography, based on classical sources and archaeological evidence, has been complex and has led to various interpretations. The archaeological data we have available to us today from the various sectors of the city lead to the foundation being dated between the years 90‑75 BC. However, there are still large areas of its urban layout to explore. In this nucleus, Caesar left legionnaires from his army, possibly to refound the city as a colony. Later, the Municipium
Emporiae, created in the Augustan period, united the Greek and Roman cities in a single enclosure, which evolved until the abandonment of the site at the end of the High Empire.

C.
