Meaningful employment and ensuring a balanced family are quite imperative to Nigeria, but what are the current dimensions of their interaction and how significant could this interaction be? This study utilized a field data generated in Calabar metropolis, the capital city of Cross River State, South Nigeria. Findings reveal that housework, women’s traditional role, makes them to sometimes display certain irregularities in their regular employment. This play down by women in their regular employment to live up to societal expectation as home keepers is explained using identity-behaviour link theory. Consequently, the paper recommends appropriate work policies and working conditions that are more women and family institution friendly in Nigeria.

One sure way of empowering women and reducing gender inequality in today's fast changing world, especially in a developing society like Nigeria, is by getting more women actively engaged in economic activities to improve their financial status. Although most of the women are found in the informal and private sectors, where their contributions to society may not be adequately felt, a recognizable proportion is still found in the formal sector where they function as actors in development and in turn receive regular salaries. In view of their increasing involvement in paid employment, this study investigates the extent of influence such familial factors as marital status, parenthood and housework have on the attitudinal disposition of female Public Servants towards paid employment in Calabar Metropolis, Nigeria. Results reveal that for both married and single women in the study, housework and child care are both very stressful and combining both tasks with paid employment is even more demanding. Results further showed that the highly demanding task of having to combine childcare and housework with paid employment results in incidences of negative attitudinal trends among subjects. The implications of this to sustainable development are considered and possible solutions to solving this dilemma of women are also suggested.

Using the Social Action Theory, this paper explains the rationale for this emerging phenomenon, paying particular attention to the crucial roles of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and private citizens in driving development via partnership. The paper argues against over dependence on foreign aid by less developed countries (LDCs), and draws attention to the need for them to look inward considering that the flow of foreign aid is on the decrease, owing to the fact that donor countries are themselves facing increasing levels of domestic challenges which demand due attention. Also, donor countries are getting weary of the continuous misappropriation of aid by corrupt leaders in less developed countries. Besides, emphasis is gradually shift...

The paper is essentially theoretical, relying mainly on library research and review of relevant literature to obtain necessary data and information. It was found that armed robbery, as a social problem, is caused by many factors and the associated risk factors are countless and destructive. Issues raised suggest a policy direction that will ensure a timely and objective incorporation of the global best practices-as enshrined in the Victims' Bill of Right (VBR), among others, into the Nigerian legal system, so as to effectively combat armed robbery victimisation and related offences. The official introduction of victim impact statements, victim-offender reconciliation, crisis interventions and restorative justice into the Nigerian criminal justice system is also advocated for. Additionally, it is suggested that social service agencies and/or providers should extend their caring services beyond victims of disaster/disease and terrorism to include armed robbery victims, given the alarming nature and extent of this phenomenon in the country.

However, Small and Medium Scaled Enterprises (SMEs), if fully developed have been identified as being beneficial in alleviating poverty through wealth and job creation. This sector can benefit any government that develops it to the extent that it has the capacity to grow a country's GDP, generate taxes and other revenue, as well as assist in bringing stability in the polity of a country. The corporate world can also gain from the specialised goods and services of SMEs and the healthy market competitiveness it promotes, thus giving way for a strong private driven economic sector, with entrepreneurs springing up. In Nigeria, the prevailing economic and political conditions have not given room for SMEs to thrive, as evidenced in the challenges they are currently facing in the country. Despite these challenges, SMEs are associated with immense benefits which can be harnessed to better the Nigerian economy. This forms the subject of analysis in this paper.
