Physical Review, 1969

Equations for all the seniority-1 states of 2N+1 nucleons in an arbitrary chargeand spin-independ... more Equations for all the seniority-1 states of 2N+1 nucleons in an arbitrary chargeand spin-independent single-particle potential and interacting through an I.=O charge-and spin-independent pairing interaction are derived. These equations are then solved analytically for a large number of physically interesting states. These states are characterized by having wave functions that are totally symmetric functions of the spinisospin variables of the N, I = 0 pairs of nucleons in the state. The supermultiplet quantum numbers of these states are given by 2'= ,ss,,˜E+ssP′=ssP"=+, ss,~, E+ss P' = ss P"= +,ss,,˜E+ssP=ssP"=+.The wave function of these states is shown to factor into a spin-isospin part times an orbital part. The spin-isospin part of the wave function is shown to satisfy three eigenvalue problems which insure that the state is a supermultiplet, spin, and isospin eigenstate, respectively. The eigenvalues of these three problems are given explicitly in terms of the quantum numbers of the state. The orbital part of the wave function is given analytically in terms of N parameters which we call pair energies. These pair energies are shown to satisfy N coupled nonlinear algebraic equations which depend parametrically upon the interaction strength, single-particle spectrum, and the supermultiplet quantum numbers of the state. Explicit expressions for the energies of the states and the occupation probabilities of the single-particle levels are given in terms of the pair energies. These expressions may be evaluated with ease for values of the parameters that are characteristic of lightweight nuclei.

The study focused on faculty and administrative subcultures and the learning environment that they help to create in these open-door institutions. The study found that different community colleges exhibit different cultures and that these cultures can be defined by a common set of structural variables. Institutional culture appeared to directly impact the educational environment and the level Of effective teaching practices varied significantly with the type of culture in which teachers were employed. An institution's degree of success in providing quality teaching and learning experiences appeared to correlate with whether the college fell within an adversarial, faculty-dominated, administratively-dominated, or shared culture domain. Those community colleges which possessed shared cultures tended to create the highest quality learning environments. Based on these findings, suggestions are offered on ways in which institutional leaders can effect change in the learning environment within the three other cultural domains. Also noted is the relevance of total quality management approaches to organizational improvement. Contains 27 references. (GLR)

The decisions that administrators make touch every facet of the institutional experience and fund... more The decisions that administrators make touch every facet of the institutional experience and fundamentally affect teaching and learning. Research shows, however, that administrators do not always recognize their influence nor their responsibility for the quality of instruction. A study of one urban community college district revealed an unforeseen and unintended impact of administrative decisions in the classrooms, even though only 2% of the Chancellor's Executive Council's decisions over an 18-month period were concerned with instruction or curriculum. Illustrating this point was the Executive Council's decision to emphasize marketing activities. This approach succeeded in recruiting more nontraditional students, but the students' lack of adequate preparation limited their success in the classroom. To deal with the challenge of providing leadership to achieve the quality of education expected by the public and needed by students, administrators should: (1) emphasize...

The Hamiltonian of the model contains interactions between bosons whose momenta have equal magnitudes but opposite directions. The matrix elements of this interaction are taken to be a constant over a range of momenta surrounding k = 0. The ground state of the 2N‐particle system is shown to be a product of N pair‐creation operators acting on the vacuum state. Each of these pair‐creation operators depends upon one of N parameters which are called pair energies. The N pair energies are shown to satisfy a coupled system of nonlinear algebraic equations. The energy of the state is the sum of the pair energies and the occupation probabilities of the single‐particle levels are given as simple functions of the pair energies. Similar results are derived for the excited states of the system and for the states of an odd number of particles. These results...

Community College Review, 1978

The contributions of trustees to the institutions they govern depend largely upon their knowledge... more The contributions of trustees to the institutions they govern depend largely upon their knowledge of the purposes their colleges were established to serve, as well as their willingness and ability to act upon such knowledge. Few trustees come to their positions with all of the information and skills required to carry out their responsibilities properly. The priorities of community colleges evolve over time as a function of the exchange process between the college and its environment. These priorities are likely to differ for any two institutions, if each accurately reflects the needs of its community. The most visible point of the exchange process is the relationship between the board, selected to represent community needs, and the president, selected for his ability to provide leadership in employing human and financial resources to respond to the priorities established by the board. Both boards and presidents make significant contributions to the process of developing institutional goals. The effectiveness of this process depends, to a substantial degree, upon achieving an appropriate level of trustee involvement in the affairs of the college. The two extremes of underinvolvement and overinvolvement place significant limitations upon the capacity of an institution to develop coherent priorities. In addition, the extremes of involvement inhibit the process of mutual education through which trustees
