Descritores: Antígenos glicosídicos associados a tumores; Alveolite alérgica extrínseca; Biomarcadores; Doenças pulmonares intersticiais.

A computed tomographic scan revealed multiple ring-enhancing lesions in both cerebral hemispheres. No antibodies to Trypanosoma cruzi were found in the cerebrospinal fluid. Treatment for toxoplasmosis of the central nervous system, which was considered the most likely diagnosis, was instituted, but the patient died after progressive neurologic deterioration. An autopsy revealed severe meningoencephalitis caused by T. cruzi.

This attention has fed growing interest into the safety and potential complications of this procedure. There is no evidence of pulmonary complications from foam sclerotherapy in humans; however, animal studies have shown possible damage. The aim of this study is to show the changes in rat pulmonary parenchyma after the injection of 1% polidocanol Tessari foam into the peripheral vein using histological analysis of the inflammatory and fibrosis processes. Methods Twenty-four Wistar rats were divided into the following four groups: 24 h polidocanol, seven-day polidocanol, 28-day polidocanol, and control group. After the foam was injected into the lateral saphenous vein, the lungs of the rats were removed for histological analysis. Results Alveolar edema was observed in only the 24 h group (P

Methods: We selected all of the patients diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and submitted to surgical biopsy in two distinct lobes between 1995 and 2005 at the Hospital São Paulo and other hospitals operated

We describe DPB in a non-Asian Brazilian citizen who has never traveled outside the country. The clinical, radiographic, and histologic features of this case resemble those described in Japanese patients. The present case shows that DPB, al

Data on prevalence of lung diseases due to inhalation of carbonaceous materials other than minera... more Data on prevalence of lung diseases due to inhalation of carbonaceous materials other than mineral coal is very limited. We present three cases of wood charcoal pneumoconiosis, two due to activated carbon, and one from wood charcoal artisan handling. To our knowledge, no clinical cases of wood charcoal pneumoconiosis, from artisan handling has been published so far. The three cases had their X rays classified by two B-readers as p/q round opacities with profusion ranging from 2/2 to 3/3. HRCT of two of them showed a diffuse centrilobular ground glass nodular pattern with subpleural small areas of consolidations. Transbronchial biopsies showed deposition of black pigment in the bronchiolar interstice similar to the histological appearance of simple coal workers pneumoconiosis, with no signs of fibrosis. Spirometry showed no abnormalities in the three cases. The authors point out to a probably underestimated respiratory occupational risk related to wood charcoal manipulation, which must be addressed mostly in developing countries, where deficient workplace conditions can lead to exposure above limit levels.

Its use for C. arabica breeding, though limited to a few F1 crosses with cultivars, proved to be efficient in terms of genetic gain regarding important coffee agronomic characteristics such as vigor, adaptability and quality. A collection derived from the 1964-65 FAO survey in Ethiopia was established at IAPAR in Londrina, PR, Brazil in 1976. Genotyping was undertaken using SSR markers that were polymorphic within these accessions. Preliminary results regarding the relation between genetic and phenotypic diversity are presented. Self pollinated progenies of 179 plants representing 115 Ethiopian accessions were established at IAPAR, from 2009 to 2012. 47 of them were also established at CPAC, DF. Various growth parameters were measured. (Resume d'auteur)

We aimed to determine the final clinical diagnosis in patients with a probable UIP pattern on HRCT subjected to surgical lung biopsy. Methods: HRCT images were assessed and categorized by three radiologists, and tissue slides were evaluated by two pathologists, all of whom were blinded to the clinical findings. The final clinical diagnosis was accomplished via a multidisciplinary discussion. Patients with a single layer of honeycombing located outside of the lower lobes on HRCT were not excluded. Results: A total of 50 patients were evaluated. The most common final clinical diagnosis was fibrotic hypersensitivity pneumonitis (38.0%; 95% CI: 24.7% to 52.8%), followed by idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (24.0%; 95% CI: 13.1% to 38.2%) and interstitial lung disease ascribed to...
