-------------------------------------------This work has as objective identifies the con...

Research paper thumbnail of A Comprehensive Study on Microgrid Technology

International Journal of Renewable Energy Research, 2014

Grid connection capability of distributed generation attracts researchers due to the cumulative d... more Grid connection capability of distributed generation attracts researchers due to the cumulative demand for electricity and environment pollution concern as a new emerging technology for providing reliable and clean power supply. A microgrid comprises distributed generation, energy storage, loads, and a control system that is capable of operating in grid-tied mode and/or islanded mode. As operation modes are shifted, the microgrid should successfully manage the voltage and frequency adjustment in order to protect the grid and any loads connected to the system. Facilitation of the generation-side and load-side management and the resynchronization process is required. This paper presents an overall description and typical distributed generation technology of a microgrid. It also adds a comprehensive study on energy storage devices, microgrid loads, interfaced distributed energy resources (DER), power electronic interface modules and the interconnection of multiple microgrids. These new general conditions for robust diagonal stabilization of a plant set are based on topological connectedness. When the conditions of our main theorem are satisfied, we say that the set {G(¿,s)} is topologically path connected. It turns out that the path connectedness of {G(¿,s)} is a necessary condition for the robust stabilization of the set but no constructive or easily comparable criterion for checking path connectedness has until now been put forth.

General existence conditions under which the stability of the individual loops of a multivariable... more General existence conditions under which the stability of the individual loops of a multivariable system in a given compact and bounded gain space imply the global asymptotic stability of the multivariable system in the same space are very useful in practice, and they essentially indicate when in principle it is possible to obtain stable closed loop performance of a multivariable system by tuning every loop separately. Such conditions are particularly useful for fault tolerant control of multivariable systems. The authors give the required necessary and sufficient conditions and effectively unify all previous work on diagonal stabilizability which includes as special cases the diagonal dominance, the H-matrix, the GKK-matrix, and the decentralized integral controllability (DIC) conditions reported previously in the literature. Some application examples are included.<<ETX>>

Research paper thumbnail of Interaction analysis for multivariable systems

IEEE International Conference on Systems Engineering

Two interaction indices for multivariable systems and an algorithm for designing two static compe... more Two interaction indices for multivariable systems and an algorithm for designing two static compensators that minimize the destructive interactions while enhancing the constructive ones are discussed. An interaction has a constructive effect if the result of the interaction augments the control effort. An interaction is said to have a negative effect if the result of the interaction either destabilizes the system or degrades its performance. The first interaction index tells quantitatively whether the interactions that result as the feedback loops are closed are constructive or destructive. This index is independent of the order in which the feedback loops are closed. The second interaction index tells quantitatively whether the interactions that result as the inputs are applied to the system are constructive or destructive. This index is independent of the order in which the inputs are applied

This study is intended to introduce the subject by reviewing the components level, structure and types of microgrid applications installed as a plant or modeled as a simulation environment. The paper also presents a survey regarding published papers on why the microgrid is required, and what the components and control systems are which constitute the actual microgrid studies. It leads the researcher to see the microgrid in terms of the actual bigger picture of today and creates a new outlook about the potential developments. Additionally, comparison of microgrids in various regions based on several parameters allows researchers to define the required criteria and features of a special microgrid that is chosen for a particular scenario. The authors of this paper also tabulated all the necessary information about microgrids, and proposed a standard microgrid for better power quality and optimizing energy generation. Consequently, it is focused on inadequate knowledge and technology gaps in the power system field with regards to the future, and it is this which has been illustrated for the reader. The existing microgrid testbeds all around the world have been studied and analyzed and several of them are explained as an example in this study. Later, those investigated distribution systems are classified based on region (North America, Europe and Asia) and, as presented in literature, a significant amount of deviation has been found. Several tabulated data sheets have been used to compare and contrast the existing test systems. This research has been concluded with worthy findings and potential areas of research that would enhance the current distributed network as well as introduce microgrid testbeds comprehensively, and aid designers in optimizing green distributed system efficiency for a reliable power supply.

Research paper thumbnail of Multi‐variable control of an integrated propulsion and airframe system

ARCHIVE: Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part I: Journal of Systems and Control Engineering 1991-1996 (vols 205-210), 1995

The development of an integrated control scheme to enhance the performance of a generic interconn... more The development of an integrated control scheme to enhance the performance of a generic interconnected multi-variable dynamical system, consisting of a turbofan engine and an airframe, in the presence of predominantly destructive dynamical interactions over the flight envelope is considered in this paper. The control scheme consists of two components: a simple static forward loop or feedback loop precompensator to improve the interactions followed by a forward or feedback loop controller to improve the performance. The system must be tolerant to soft and hard output sensor failures by means of analytic redundancy only. A control methodology to satisfy the above specifications is presented here. Necessary and sufficient conditions are presented in order to achieve a stable closed-loop performance of the overall system by tuning every loop separately, that is decentralized stability.
